There's been a large uptick in people noticing their PSP batteries expanding/cracking/even exploding in recent months. I found mine having expanded and burst the battery case off about a month ago and disposed of it, and apparently it wasn't just some freak case. The batteries are reaching an age where this is becoming common in general.

While in use? Or just blowing up lying there in storage?

That much I don't know. I know I hadn't touched mine in a good few years, probably, and the battery looked ready to burst.

EDIT: Topic post updated with an article on it.

Damn that's crazy. Gotta think some Gamestop's and other used gaming stores probably got a pile of ticking fire hazards, and every person who has one in storage completely forgotten about.

Do you have to open up the PSP to find out or is it obvious? I have both an original PSP and a PSP GO. Neither case looks to be bulging.

I don't know about the Go, but the PSP battery cover is pretty snug, so you'd notice a bulge if it's bad, though it might still be worth looking at in case.

This is annoying to me because I may or may not have one (seriously, I can't remember if I kept it or not) and it would be sitting in... a box. Somewhere. Now I feel like I need to unpack and search every single box and the only alternative is that maybe the house will burn down from an exploding PSP.

FYI, the 3DS (and possibly DS) is the same. So check on those too.

The 3DS is a good 6 years younger, so it'd be a good bit more rare for it to be happening to those right now.

Hm. Thanks for the alert. Mine seems fine. I don't know what model I have but I'm pretty sure I got mine basically on launch day.

Also it's crazy that these batteries lasted so long without issue yet my Galaxy S6 battery bulged to the point where it broke the case and cracked all the screen within like 1 year of not being used.

I think you can just remove and dispose of the battery. I mean you can't use the PSP anymore but that's not too big a problem if you aren't using it anyways.

Not saying it's impossible. A battery can start bulging in less than a year for a number of reasons.

It's just that it's unlikely to happen from age in bulk at this point. That doesn't discount things like defects, excess heat or cold, etc.

And what I mean by that is in the case with the PSP, batteries bulging due to age of the components is becoming more common at this point. That's not the only thing that can cause it, though. Defects can, shortages, being in excessive heat or cold, or so on can cause it to happen to a battery at any point in its life.

What I meant is that as of right now, there aren't stories in bulk of 3DS batteries randomly bulging, and it makes sense since they're not as old.
