Since when do you have your left thumb on the D-Pad and right on the Joystick?

Usually for me right thumb is always the buttons and left is the D-Pad or Joystick based on the game.

We still use basically the same controller from its competitor.

Yup. Anyone who tries to give an actual argument is just trolling or completely overtaken by nostalgia.

I feel like it was kinda a bridge between simpler and more button-y designs, so maybe that's it.

I was never a big fan but it's still probably what I will picture if you ask me to think of a game controller.

The idea was that you would use either the stick or d-pad. Think of it as a pad with two left halves, and you hold whichever one you need for the game you're playing. The "you need three hands" thing assumes that you need access to both inputs at all times, which isn't what it was designed for.

I'm surprised nobody really made games that used your right hand in the middle. Would have basically been a console version of WASD+mouse movement. I remember there was one shooter that was fully 3-D in space without gravity...maybe that used it?

Yeah it's a pretty bad controller, SNES->PSX had a much superior design which is why it's the one which persists.

Most games I played only supported the analog. Not only is the analog stick itself bad, I found it uncomfortable how it made the controller asymmetrical. I think I'd have less issue with the controller if the D-Pad and analog stick were swapped. I also didn't like the six buttons on the right face, it was too many for me to train myself to innately access.

which means it's bad because it was restrictive and lacked vision

It works quite well for the games that was made for it and had the best analogue stick for any controller that generation. Yes, the stick wore out and yes, using it felt a bit unbalanced always but despite it's wonkyness it's a solid controller... Much better than that abomination that is the GameCube controller...

yeah it has to be nostalgia imo

i feel like controller design has pretty much settled in to an ideal at this point. PSX and XBOX controllers haven't been doing anything different in ages. I guess Nintendo still tries to do new things, but they aren't as comfortable to hold as psx/xbox controllers really. i don't expect much more innovation in controller design going forward.

though i will say, as someone who primarily grew up with PSX controller, i really hate controllers with A/B/X/Y. i never remember which letter is where (especially because nintendo/microsoft do it differently, right?), and if at all possible i still make game UI show things with square/triangle/cross/circle even though I use a 360 controller on my PC nowadays

Gamecube controllers actively makes me dislike the games I play using it. It has a similar effect that sitting in a chair made out of asphalt would have. There's literally nothing I like about it. The controller feels more like it's been coagulated more than shaped and holding it for longer periods make my hands ache slightly in unexpected places, every single button is in an slightly awkward place in a way that makes every layout regardless of game both uncomfortable and unintuitive, the cross is comically small, the triggers somehow manages to be too resistant, spongy and loose at the same time which is kinda enigmatic and I don't like the shape nor texture of the triggers either... If I have to say something nice I guess the left stick isn't the worst but I'm not a fan of the jaggies.
Honestly, the best thing about the Dolphin emulator isn't the graphical enhancements or anything... It's that I can finally play Gamecube games using a controller that doesn't actively hate you (although the feeling is mutual),

the Z button felt awesome to hold. it's the N64's Z-button and the wiimote's joystick's trigger for best trigger-buttons ever.

it also had a hilarious aesthetic combination of futuristic and kiddie that i still love

Games were literally designed for you to hold one or the other, due to the combination of either D-Pad + L or Control Stick + Z. If you were holding both sides for control stick games, you were doing it wrong.
