I mean it's a sweet gesture but do they realize what year it is? I don't think most people even have a CD player anymore.

Atlus, Falcom, these companies include a soundtrack CD like Falcom did with Ys memories of celceta ps4 port, but it kinda feels unnecessary in this day and age.

Atlus...

Atlus is a god tier developer when it comes to fan service.

I still have my Rikki keychain that came with a River City game on 3DS.

It was literally crammed into the game box and sealed like that. Whatever works, lol.

the entire point for it is to be a collectible of some kind. Costs them a few cents to print, raises the price of the "special edition" by $20. It encourages nerds to upsell themselves.

You can play them on your blu ray or dvd player, so actually youre kind of off on this one.

Idk if this is not widely known, but yeah.

A CD is less bullshittery than a download code that requires signing up for another damn service you don't want or need, and very few publishers are willing to just hand out a URL to a zipfile (though I seem to remember Bloodstained doing that).

Imagine

It's funny I remember reading an article a decade ago that despite Japan's image of being futuristic and technologically advanced, they're actually extremely stuck in the past, with stuff like the fact that their businesses still heavily used fax machines.

YES. The company I work for still makes us fax in timesheets at the end of every month. It's maddening.

I would say it's less that Japanese people are resistant to new technology and more that they don't want to give up the old. VHS was still quite popular in the mid 2000s. Rental DVD places have seen a decline in business but are still fairly popular. One of the big reasons people are slow to switch to monthly streaming services like Netflix is because almost every night they have broadcast TV shows that they loyally watch.

And I imagine that part of the reason CDs are included is because more Japanese people have CDs now. I think part of it is also that they want to give you a physical object to keep in your collection though. I think it's good, although if I were in charge I would include a code to stream/download with every CD.

I liked that Atlus put effort in printing a soundtrack CD for Catherine, meanwhile Sony literally markets digital soundtracks like that's actually a consumer desire lmao.

I bet some of them still have a discman that they carry around and listen to on the train etc.

Discmans have never been very popular here. Minidisks were the big thing in the late 90s and 2000s. They actually kept their popularity even when iPods were big.

However I don't see them much anymore. One technology that HAS caught on is the smartphone, and having ways to conveniently listen to music on a device you already own is hard to turn down. Especially because putting new music on the old technology means you have to buy new MDs then copy the songs you want onto them. And of course you can have pretty much your whole music collection on one device if you want to at this point.

So yeah, I think almost everyone has switched to smartphones as their music listening device.
