When I was a kid and I was at a birthday party, it was normal for kids to have water/juice/soda and for adults to have beer or a wine cooler or margarita. They wouldnt get drunk, but theyd have a drink or two if they wanted.

I was telling my gf a story about how my brother got drunk at our cousins birthday party once, and she was surprised that there was alcohol at a kids party. She said that it sounds irresponsible to drink while youre in charge of kids, and she doubts her parents would let her go to a party where adults were drinking.... and I guess that makes sense, but, besides that one incident where my brother and cousin got drunk, it was never a problem. And for the record, they were in college, and werent looking after any kids.

plus Chuck E. Cheese sells beer so I feel like it cant be that uncommon.

did adults drink at kid parties when you were a kid? What about now?

I had no idea that Chuck E. Cheese sells beer, that is funny as fuck to me.

But yes, it was very normal for the adults to drink at birthday parties for me growing up. Usually only the men though because the women would be the ones to drive home.

I don't think so, but I also probably didn't notice. I know my folks wouldn't serve that at a kids party.

Was normal when I was a kid, but most of my family are trash or drunks in general so that doesn't say much

Not that I remember. I didn't go to much parties. I do recall going to the pub with my old men on several occasions growing up though.

yeah it is kinda weird, I remember going there in my early 20s with some friends though and getting a pitcher and some pizza. It was fun I guess but it was also in the early afternoon before kids really got out of school and started showing up, probably wouldnt have had a good time if the place was packed with kids

She's wrong. It would only be irresponsible if they're getting drunk.

I don't recall adults drinking at any of the parties I went to as a child. Back then, being good role models was very important.

No, people who feel they need to drink at a kids party have problems and I was fortunate I didn't grow up around people with serious drinking problems.

I don't think they felt the need to. I think they just sometimes did... But I would say they have a drinking problem because they had a beer with the guys at the party together...

Because clearly somebody who drinks a little alcohol is a bad role model.

Yeah its normal

This. But it doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing either.

Some people use children's birthdays, and other child-related events, to drink alcohol.
It's not much of an issue unless they drink quite a bit though.

Not that I recall, although at most birthday parties the only adults were the parents of the kid having/throwing the birthday party. We'd get dropped off by our parents to the party, then picked up after.

Like at kid's birthday parties? Not that I remember. They were usually in the middle of the day and the only people there were the moms who probably just wanted the party over so they could rush home and drink in silence.

Not so much at kids' birthday parties or anything like that, but they'd sometimes have a drink or two at get-togethers where there were both adults and kids. Never so much as to get appreciably drunk, since that'd just be irresponsible, but something to enjoy with dinner or whatever.

Zeus posted...
Yes.

In some ways, adults who drink responsibly are arguably more useful as role models than adults who don't drink at all. Without responsible drinkers in their lives, teens are left to learn about alcohol and drinking responsibly from their peers/personal experimentation (since we all know that telling teenagers "this is bad never do it" accomplishes basically nothing), which generally isn't the best idea. Having a role model who doesn't need to drink to have a good time, exercises good judgement about when to drink, and doesn't drink more than is appropriate for the context is far more informative.

Not at the party for friends and classmates. The family and extended party, probably, I do not remember clearly, but I would not be surprised. (smoking was also completely normal)

And? It is a restaurant, I sincerely doubt I could find a restaurant here of any kind without an alcohol license.

Quick check, seems I can, but only American chain brands. Everything else, even if considered "childish" by Dutch culture, serves alcohol.

Not all that often. There were a few birthday parties where it did happen but it's usually cause some of the adults got dragged along and they isolate themselves to drink with their buddies, or because something else is also happening like Superbowl Weekend lol.

Even if you're taught to drink responsibly by parents it doesn't mean the kids won't drink irresponsibly in their teens.

It's hard to get an alcohol license in America. In fact they have two different ones. One for just beer and one for liquor.
