just got the first star. Im guessing this whole portion of the game was just a tutorial-type thing to ease players in.

yes and no, dont expect the game to ever become challenging
the game is designed to get kids interested in jrpgs so its very easy since its aimed at a younger audience

It is on the easier side, but there's still some bosses that can mess you up if you're unprepared, like Yardiovich and Johnny. And Culex is really tough if you don't use the Lazy Shell >_>

Also, I do like how almost every boss has some unique gimmick to him that's different from a normal battle, so it keeps the fights from being simple HP sponges

I had beaten the sewer boss and did the mini game thing, but all my save game data got deleted. Guess Im going to have to restart and just rely on sleep mode when Im not playing.

Use save states I guess. Cuz if you die, it sends you back to your last save, but you keep all the exp you got.

Or get better emulator. I played on my phone with no issues with the regular saving >_>

its my most humiliating gaming story
i got the game when i was in grade 2
i didnt beat the game until i was in grade 8

for the life of me i couldnt figure out the password creating a vicious cycle where i would reach the password, get stuck at the password, stop playing the game, and then come back to it 5 months later but not wanting to just continue from my old save i would instead restart

one day i got the clue i was missing and everything just clicked
i have a pretty bad memory but that is one thing that will never leave my mind

similar story for me this was my first RPG as a kid so i didnt understand the mechanics so when i finally got up to this point i didnt think to talk to locals i always just played to progess the game never looked around or talked to NPC's. a older friend of mine told me the pass word and up until i posted in this topic i never knew the game gave you clues. over 20 years later after reading this topic its been revealed the clues were always there.

Question I forgot to ask:

I can block regular enemy attacks using the timed hit mechanic perfectly well, but I always seem to miss timing whenever the enemy uses a special move with a name, like Fangs or Fire Wave or whatever. Are these unblockable or is my timing just bad?

Some enemy spells are unblockable, while other are >_> Usually when it looks like a physical kind of attack it can be blocked, but if it looks like a magical attack, it cannot. So Fang can probably be blocked, but Flame Wall cannot be blocked.

The first real portion of the game is when youre chasing Crocco in the grasslands/forest area. The second scenario is an underground level. I wonder if that was intentional hehe

There's an entire level that's a reference to the underground level later on

there are also a ton of little mini things you can miss like crate guys casino
or my personal favorite, if you stay at the inn in marrymore you can extend your visit over and over again even if you dont have the money to pay. when you try to leave if you are in debt you are forced to work as a bell hop until the debt is repaid
i used to do this for fun

You sometimes get Flower Boxes when working as a bellhop, so it was a pretty sweet deal.

a couple years ago a new glitch was discovered called the switch glitch and it makes peach even more overpowered
get close to leveling up with mallow and peach in your party (it doesnt have to be mallow but it usually done with him)
anyway mallow should be learning a new spell on his level up.

now us a star to level up without ever going into battle. now the trick to the glitch is try to open the menu just as you hit the chest for star power. if you hear the star music when the menu opens you know you have succeeded cause opening the menu with star power is supposed to be impossible
anyway switch the slot mallow and peach are in so if he is on top movie him to the bottom and her above him.

anyway go and star power kill enemies with star power and gain level ups that way.
once its over the game will get confused and register peach as if she was mallow so she gains the stats he would have at level up. this also gives her his spell he would have learned so you can use this to teach her mallows spells
or even a spell of bowsers just for the novelty of seeing a bowser spell do actual damage

Ok so Im at the scene where Mallow finds out he was basically adopted (lol)

the track playing is that one sad/melodrama-type Italian mobster type song. I have no idea what its called but hopefully someone knows what Im talking about. Im certain this song is used in like cartoons and stuff when characters are talking about woe-is-me sob stories and stuff. I havent watched Godfather but I think its from that. Does anyone know what Im talking about?

Also, did you visit the shop in Mushroom Kingdom to get the Cricket Pie and give it to Frogfucious? A lot of people forget to do that on the way out and miss out on Mallow's 1st weapon even longer >_>

Just go back and he'll give it to you. It's a quick trip. Plus it's manditory for a level to unlock later down the road anyway, so you might as well just get it out of the way now.

The scene when youre playing with the dolls was cute. Love the remixed Mario music. Im in the mushroom cave forest thing now, looks like Im going to recruit the famous Geno soon. The track that plays here is probably the most iconic of the game.

Also, all armors for everyone are just stat bonuses with the exception of 3, which everyone can equip:

-Work Pants from Moleville give you a buff to your attack and speed as well as a mild buff to defense. Best used on Bowser for 90% of the game since it literally outclasses all his normal armor until the volcano dungeon

-Lazy Shell which decreases your attack and magic attack and speed by a shit ton, but increases your defense and magic defense by a shit ton and gives immunity to status effects and instant death. Basically you'll probably only get 1 point of damage from almost every attack in the game except from the most powerful spells. Best used on Peach for the whole game cuz it makes her a near unkillable healer.

-Super Suit increases your attack, defense, and speed by an insane amount and protects against status effects, but is next to impossible to obtain. You have to get 100 Super Jumps, which basically means you have to time an input 100 times with a 2-frame window >_> Can be used on anyone but Mario or Geno probably get the most out of it. I think Lazy Shell has *slightly* higher defense but this has zero penalties from wearing it

How is the 100 jumps hard? I usually have it done before the first star. I also think you typo'd there because the super suit can be used on Mario. Pretty much the last armor change I make for Mario once I get it

Don't buy anything from the Frog Coin store in Tadpole Pond: it's all trash. Save all your coins for the frog coin store in Seaside Town. That's where the good stuff is >_>

Also, if you sleep in Rose Town's inn after getting the 2nd star, you get to see a Zelda cameo

Punchinello just has a weird design. The in-game sprites make it look like he's a bird poking his head out of an eggshell. The official artwork has him looking like this:

He was a bomb. Most of the star bosses are weapons (axes, daggers, spears, etc).

Incidentally, nothing in his dialog suggests that he's part of the Smithy Gang. He was just dicking around on his own.

That's because he wasn't part of the Smithy Gang. As when you reach the factory near the end of the game, you don't fight any replicas of him like you do with the bosses that were. He's also not mentioned among the other bosses that were part of the Smithy Gang, plus the regular boss music plays when fighting him instead of the one that plays during fights with Smithy Gang bosses.

A jump mario is barely worth it unless you want to immediately max it out at the start of the game.

I think just "pow" every level is a much more practical strategy.

Hp, even on good level ups isnt as good as the other 2 and att/def is better than sp.att/def.

Even a character doing nothing but sp att/def on all levels isnt that great.

Pow on all levels especially when youll be geno boosting them is the most practical way to go.

And Pow on all peach levels makes her an offensive attacker later as well.

Oh yeah, the games super easy anyways...
