kids arent doing school work during that time. So theyre probably trolling the boards here honestly. But during school, theyre doing schoolwork.

I think you underestimate instructor led classes. You cant just sit a kid in front of a computer for 8 hours a day and expect them to absorb all that information. Thats not how kids learn. When schools closed early this year parents were staying home and working with their children to help them with online classes. They no longer have that luxury.

I teach my kids at home. I teach my kids math and science. I'm also an engineering manager and a small business owner. My wife teaches our kids the other subjects while nursing and selling real estate part time.

While I admire what you do and think that's awesome. You have to understand that that isn't possible for every family.

And also, there are a lot of parents who might not be as educated and have the ability to educate their children in the same way you or a certified teacher would.

Congratulations. Youre part of a small percentage that can actually make it work. You also have the added bonus of a spouse who helps. What about single parents? Parents that work 12-14 hour days? Parents that straight dont care? Dont overestimate the ability of the majority of public school parents.

It can be tough to be sure, and I do not envy single parents going at it alone. All of our life is structured, and we don't always get time to do things like make dinner every day. Takeout is the norm for us. It can be done, but it's not an easy life. Homeschooling is a decision that we made largely due to a perceived cultural decay in our community. We had our convictions and were willing to ensure they were satisfied regardless of the cost.

Hes trying to get the favor of all of the parents who cant afford to stay home and monitor their children if they do online school.

Families in very poor areas are unlikely to have a home internet connection that can facilitate online classes, which for a lot of kids is already an inferior method of learning.

On top of that youd have to be a pretty well disciplined grade school kid to sit at home by yourself in front of the computer all day doing 6+ hours of school work.

Not saying its worth it to go back with covid still rampant, I wouldnt want to. But all online school offers a lot of problems that some people really care about.

What do people want, more teachers and smaller amount of students per classroom so that teachers can properly do their jobs and kids actually learn?

I dunno, I kinda like our current system of cramming almost 30 kids in a medium size room with teachers left to babysit them.

And now theres a pandemic to make things even better.

And even then, leaving children home alone is illegal in a lot of states until they reach a certain age. A lot of states vary from 8-12 years old. It would present a logistical nightmare for many families who have both parents needing to go to work.

He wants things to get back to normal, even if it won't be normal due to everyone getting sick and some dying. My boss was the same way. Everyone limits the amount of people coming into their stores to 60-70 people. Not our store, 300 is our limit, even though we aren't any bigger than those stores. Thankfully we don't have to deal with the virus much where I'm from, haven't had a case in 3 weeks.

What are the single parents doing during the summer months when school was out in the past?
Mine took advantage of the goodwill of people that were well off enough to have a stay at home parent and beg "take care of mine too while you're at it."

OT, there are 2 camps about coivd: one wanting things to get back to normal ASAP, and one that wants to hunker down until it's 110% safe (not a typo). Trump is obviously trying to appeal to the first, and isn't going to listen to rebuttals that come off too rooted in wanting to keep things shut down. I don't mean it's to hurt him. I fully expected that when the "start to open up" orders came people wouldn't give up home life quietly, and it wouldn't matter if it came from Fauci himself.

Kids also can't learn well when they are sick or dying, or watching their friends get sick and die, or watching their parents get sick and die.
This country handled this terribly. We need at acknowledge that and accept the consequences. Shit needs to be shut down, and shut down for real this time.
That means no opening schools. If online school isn't a feasible option, then we put school on hold for now. Yes, it sucks, but if done correctly there is a chance that we could get this thing under control.
So yes, children would be behind a year in school but they'll be alive. They can make up that year, they can extend schooling. Again, it sucks, but better than the alternative of dying or watching friends and family die.
Face it, Trump is an absolute moron and I have no idea how anyone can still support or defend him.

As far as long term impact, getting kids back in school should be one of the highest priorities. America will be paying for it the next 80 years if we have a generation of kids that had 1-2 years of instruction done remotely.

It could be have the young kids go, they are at a lower risk.

well first off, kids are less susceptible to the virus so your whole argument is based on an unlikely outcome. Kids dying? Not a reality based on what scientists have already said.

second off, your proposal is not gonna happen. We arent gonna shut down everything indefinitely. If you presented an actual strategy thats one thing, but youve presented something that is honestly not gonna happen.

Since when did less susceptible mean immune? They can and still will get it and can and will still die. Also any staff at the school, their lives matter too.

Things wouldn't have needed to stay closed this long if the US did literally anything to try and curb spread. There's a reason the US is basically the only country that isn't facing fewer cases.
