https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-07-08/coronavirus-moves-nyc-affordable-housing-crisis-to-breaking-point

Two-thirds of New Yorkers rent their homes, making it Americas biggest rental market, and its always had its own crazy kind of housing math. But with unemployment soaring and the typical rent about twice the national average, the numbers no longer add up. A quarter of the citys apartment renters havent paid since March, according to the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP), a group that represents mostly landlords of rent-stabilized buildings. It would take something on the order of divine intervention to keep the situation from worsening. The temporary $600 weekly boost to unemployment benefits is set to expire at the end of July, unless Congress intervenes to extend it. That means many tenants whove managed to stay current on their rent payments will no longer be able to. Its going to be a mess, says Jonas Shaende, chief economist at the Fiscal Policy Institute

In New York and other densely packed cities, people who can work remotelypredominantly office workersare moving to the suburbs if they can afford it. But many renters cant. They include the poorest and most vulnerable people, particularly minorities and immigrants, documented and undocumented. Among them are also millennials with multiple roommates. So while the economic victims of Covid-19 cant be forced out of their homes, their indebtedness will grow month by month, potentially damaging their credit rating and their ability to find another landlord willing to take a chance on them.

Sounds like the landlords problem. I've been living rent free since March and my landlord claims that i owe him $9800 in 4 months rent. I told him to go fuck himself because California has a law in place preventingnkandlirds from evicting tenants. Besides, the government will pay for my rent anyway so I'm not worried.

So many people are gonna go homeless and be completely fucked by the growing debt of back rent.

It's time to cancel rent and mortgages and put it on the banks to pay for it. The people bailed them out, now it's their turn to bail the people out.

Funny how the well-off people constantly ask for bail outs. But if the lower class asks for rent forgiveness its no, you no good welfare baby.

That's different though because it's happening to them. Bad things just happened to them whereas people are poor because they made poor life choices.

It's pretty wild. They not only should get their rent forgiven and cancelled until the country is reasonably safe to reopen, but not only that, they should also get a monthly relief check right now.

A lot of these "landlords" are entities that other people are investing in for profit. If the investors drop out or pull their funds, a lot of these buildings will more or less close or won't be able to function properly.

This isn't the case with every renter situation, but it sure applies to a lot of places.

Just goes to show how flimsy this whole system is. How much folks have been getting taken advantage of.

I think the rich billionaire class should bail out the country. They have more than enough money to do it. They should do some good with their wealth besides hoard it. It's time to redistribute the wealth these lottery winners got.

So let me get this straight
If I started my own company 10 years ago and became super successful off my own hard work and ideas, while paying my employees a living wage and benefits and also paying my fair share of taxes, it is still somehow my job to bail out everyone else? Including all those who are financially irresponsible?

I have so much to say about this. My friend and I started looking at apartments this month to rent since prices have gone down because of corona. Let me tell you, there are so many places in the city that we both would be paying over $1100 each Towards the rent a month. Many of the bedrooms were 6 x 9, 6 x 10, 8 x 8, for over $1100 each.

Just my opinion, but $1100 for a closet is a bad deal :p

Simple supply/demand mechanisms.

A whole bunch of people want to live in "the city" instead of Yonkers or over in Jersey somewhere, and rent control has split the market into low-end and luxury, without a hell of a lot in the middle.

In the Bronx and even parts of other boroughs. NYC is not nearly as bad as places on the west coast unless you want to live in specific areas.

Though it'll get there in a few years, so my point will be moot.

If landlords were millionaires they would already have an emergency fund now.

Fact of the matter is landlords simply took advantage of the fact they can live off of other people's wealth and never decided to prepare for a situation where that stops being the case.
