Okay, so Genichiro is probably my favourite boss so far. And yeah, he's much easier to learn the parry system on than anything I've faced so far and it's really fun. Also the first time I've been able to see much use in Mikiri Counter outside of literal spear fighters.

Then after a fair duel where I spent most of my healing he has a second lightning powered form. God damn, Fromsoft. Enough with the second forms plz!

before my disc broke, I got to Genichiro, and I think that I beat his first form without dying (but I had done some exploring, and beat some other bosses and mini-bosses first).

but after finding out that he had a second form, it kinda demoralized me, and I could rarely get to the second form again, and I really suck at counters/techniques where you need to jump

I wish the symbol for sweeps and trusts were different, because I just don't have the reaction speed to in the second of notice you have to make the decision which button to use.

Even in form 1 I was annoyed that on his second health bar rather than always being a thrust after a jump smash, he sometimes does a sweep instead.

Also I don't really understand this idea of lightning attacks. Seems complicated. I have to anticipate them it seems (basically I have to learn which attacks have lightning property through trial and error) and when I see them coming I have to jump and press L1 then R1?

The reaction time actually isn't that bad. You'll get used to it. Pay attention to their body positioning.

His second form is a freebie. I think he always starts with a thrust so free mikiri at the start. Lightning also makes it easier. It's just jump R1 if I remember correctly, and it's a strong punish.

You can just ichimonji him after the jump iirc. Prob the best combat art series in the game

Typically his lightning attack has enough wind up to react to it and jump before he does it. IIRC, it's only the one attack that replaces his jumping downward strike that he did in the first round.

Genichiro is great. Really hard, but really fun. Probably in the top 3 boss fights in the game. It's just so good. Also, you might want to look at the full title of the game again lol.

...Oh. >_>

Anywho. Game is asking me if I wanna help Kuro or protect him. Without spoiling much, is this a choice that has significant consequences? Not in terms of story, but in terms of the game's content? Like if I choose one over the other do I miss out on areas or bosses or some such?

Or is it just a consequenceless choice relating to how you want to characterize Okami?

In this instance, yes. You only have one choice. But you are now close to the parts that decide which ending you get. They only thing I'll say is, don't go for the Shura ending on your first play through, as you miss quite a bit of the game if you do.

I think I misunderstood what was meant by protect in this instance. I assumed it was something like rather than choosing to help his master, you were choosing to simply remain in the role of a servant whose given task was to offer protection while he goes about on that task. But it seems more along the line of "your wishes are too dangerous, I must protect you by stopping you from completing them."

I really felt protect was more in essence with Okami's character as I understood it, but it seems much less so how the game actually interprets it.

How do I get Emma to upgrade my gourd again? I have a seed, but she doesn't have the option to do anymore.

You've got it. They were trying to get across that Kuro's wishes go against the iron code, which Wolf always follows. And Wolf sees helping Kuro as putting his life in danger. Can't really comment on the lore of the traditional Okami, but that was the basic gist of what the game is trying to get across.

Not gonna lie, this is making me close to some form of ragequit.

It's not even that he's that hard in the second phase. Just got him down to less than half help on my third time reaching it. It's just the way that I'm apparently not allowed to feel good for finally mastering a boss, I have to get beaten down and down and down. I didn't like most of this stuff in Dark Souls 3 (especially not Friede) and I like it even less here.

I would say it was the opposite for me. I could feel myself getting better and better each attempt. There are so many times I died when the boss was close to death, but the following attempts were even cleaner. Eventually the attempt I kill the boss was the cleanest attempt

DS3 felt more like RNG outside of Nameless King and Gael which felt like Sekiro bosses. I don't know the movesets of the other bosses.

Got him. Yeah, I really fucking hated that. Second phase wasn't even fun. Basically spent 90% of the fight baiting out the four-hit combo, then went in for a hit or two and fucked off to avoid the AoE, maybe throwing a charged Shuriken while he was screaming.

If you Parry the overhead strike in the second phase, you can use your spear to pull out the centipede and do a bit more damage for a few swings. It doesn't really affect the fight all that much, but it's a cool little detail. Also, I think the second phase throws people off because of how deliberately weird the animations are, but it really is easier on replays.

I mean, yeah he was easy enough, but it was a really fun fight. One thing that keeps impressing me about the game is how varied some of these encounters are even though I'd probably consider the core of the gameplay more simplistic (but harder) than Souls.

Anyway, done for today. Some stuff that happened. I (probably) fully explored the senpou temple. Got to the memory or whatever it was, but I didn't wanna start it so late. Also didn't kill the headless dude. Not sure what the deal with the kite is. I "spirited away" the dude at the start of the level. No clue what the kite is over. I see some area across the valley, but I imagine I might need to go through the snake cave to get there.

Also went and killed the dude in the well where the game started and got to the depths area, but didn't explore at all. Sent the dude to the dungeon because I dunno. To be a dick, I guess.

When you kill an enemy and you get a popup that you got an item rather than having to use square to collect the loot, does that mean it was a scripted drop for the first kill on that specific enemy? I'd imagine so, but maybe I'm wrong.

Any tips on using the umbrella properly? I feel like it might not be that useful considering how much the game is based on parrying and deflecting even without it, but I got an upgrade for it that protects against ghosties, so I figure I should probably learn it.

Also also, is it just me or is the attack speed of Okami ridiculously slow considering he's supposed to be a ninja? Especially the running slash is absurd to me.

You're actually quite fast. Something that took me a long time to realise.

Between deflecting/parrying and running circles around the enemies, you really only need to dodge as a last resort.

Boss fight videos show the umbrella being incredibly useful. Unfortunately, I never really learned how to use it but I've seen folks use it to trivialize quite a few bosses.

Also, you fought Great Ape the same way I did. I dont think that's how you're intended to do it but it works well enough. I could never get the timing right on the parries.

That boss is just terribly designed. It's supposed to be a puzzle of creating the right conditions for ambushes, but turns out it's easier and simpler to just chase them around and hope you catch them unawares.

The anti-ghost umbrella is excellent for blocking ghost projectile attacks; all you need to do is hold the button to keep blocking them. And yes, the running slash is absurdly slow. Feels like it's better to run, stop, then attack.

Sekiro is one of the most perfectly-crafted games that I absolutely hated.

I can't fault the game for its vision and execution - because it sure executed it with razor-sharp precision. But it's just too focused on a singular form of combat and is too uncompromising for me.
