undefined posted... *shrug* All I can do is link this study. You got a tl;dr on that, chief? I read the study, and it seemed to conclude that the protests had two populations to them: those who stayed home, and those who attended the protests. The amount of people who stayed home was increased by the protests (those in this population did so for e.g. afraid of violence), and they saw a decrease in COVID-19 cases. The ones who attended the protests seemed to have increased cases of COVID-19, but these were "on net" the same of the ones that stayed home. The conclusion seemed to imply that the protests impacted the amount of COVID-19 cases in each of these populations differently, but on the whole, protesting counties still had the same number of cases as the control, non-protesting counties. From the conclusion: Regardless of the underlying mechanisms, our findings show that the protests and the fight against COVID-19 were on net [emphasis original] aligned. It is important to underscore that our findings do not imply that that this was the case for all parts of the population. The net effect of increased sheltering and decreased case growth could mask adverse outcomes within a subset of the population (specifically protest attendees). I would be interested to know if anyone else read the study and what their conclusions on the study were. I am not a scientist or economist by trade, so it would be good to know if I explained this correctly. --- Always delivers. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Makes both sides of the argument kind of correct too - it's true that mass protests will spread the virus and have potential to increase or even spike the number of new infections (and probably true that some people will now die as a result of them), but also true that in this case the total number did not rise, because the lower spread from more people staying at home as a reaction effectively cancelled it out. Initially, when I read the topic title and thought about, I can see how it would make sense in that there would be a spike in cases, but the article proves otherwise. Also a nice message at the end of the article that people often forget: Our findings also highlight the importance of understanding the behavior of all relevant populations when conducting analysis in the realm of social science in general, and public health in particular: the most visible portion of the population is not always the primary driver of the outcome of interest. That is a very interesting point. It can be very easy to see one or two things change, and assume one causes the other. I remember a professor once asking during a lecture if an increase in ice cream sales caused shark attacks. While it's true that they are correlated (as one goes up, so does the other), the real cause was a hidden third variable - time of year. More people go to the beach during summer, and as such, buy more ice cream and fall victim to more shark attacks. It's all very interesting, and I appreciate your perspective. That said, I have seen people saying that the protests did not cause a spike in the rona. I can't understand this logic. I have heard some say it's because protestors are wearing masks and social distancing. While some maybe, from the news reports it doesn't seem like everyone is.Because it didn't spike all around. It spiked in states that opened up early. After they were repeatedly warned that opening early would cause a spike. Plus a ton of people are uncomfortable about the protest and staying inside and avoiding people as a result. That offset a big potential increase in itself. --- Switch FC: SW-3917-4425-6106 PSN: PiKappaPhi769 ... Copied to Clipboard!

So I agree and disagree at the same time. I think the protests did cause an increase in people getting coronavirus, but it wasn't the cause for the big spike, it was one of the causes though. Reopening too early because people have summer plans and it would be a bummer for them not to go to the pool during the summer as opposed to staying inside with the AC on and the protests played a role in increasing the number of cases.
