The insurance industry will make sure that when they won't be available until long after they're ready, so I don't have any fears about them whatsoever

Equal, until practical everyone is using driverless cars. Just because you're in a driverless car doesn't magically protect you from other people's stupidity.

I mentioned to my dad that it'll probably become illegal for a human to drive a car at some point, like maybe it will be awhile like in 50 years or 100 years but it will happen, and he thinks i am totally insane.

I think he just hasn't thought about it.

I'd rather drive myself, thank you.
If they ever take driving away from us, I am going to be a very sad man for a long time.

I mean we have the technology where if humans stopped driving, driverless cars would perform just fine.

The issue is converting everyone to a driverless car at the same time.

I love driving and hate commuting

It's going to be a long time before self driving cars make it to market, but for 95% of stuff I'll do I'll prefer self driving cars

AI and automation in the current sense began around 2007 with IBM Watson and how our social media data is the creator of all this. But it would usher in the next era for sure.

I don't understand how anyone could vote for something besides the third option. All we need to do is take away the license of the worst drivers on the road (once they get into their third accident or something) and force them to use an AI car instead, and the roads will be 35% safer overnight.

Transportation jobs are roughly 10% of the workforce.
That would affect 16 million people with job loss.
Or rather, you could look at it like everyone in LA,NY, Chicago and Dallas went unemployed.

You would still need a vehicle operator to assist with mechanical/software issues and emergencies.

Would not affect employment in all likelihood.

Driverless cars are fine. It's having people that are still driving vehicles mixed in with driverless cars that will cause most of the issues.

Self-driving cars wouldn't entirely cut out transportation jobs. Like, even if self-driving cars were fully available, I'd still prefer to use public transport because then I don't have the hassle and expense of car ownership. (Also I expect the train is faster than getting stuck in rush hour traffic jams and whatnot)

Its not the point of "not all will go away" its the point that the premise of it drastically shrinks the human participation in the workforce. Ok so maybe not all 10% of the workforce that transportation represents goes away. Even if its only half of the total transportation jobs, its still going to increase human purposelessness which leads to loneliness and bitterness.

This modern era of AI and automation began due to you know what of you know when

Not only transportation jobs, but also cars in general are adding more features that make local mechanic's jobs obsolete.

Currently reasonable people can buy older cars and replace parts but once self driving cars are a thing (And the only thing) say good bye to ever going anywhere but the dealership for car repairs.

Basically we're giving up all autonomy for the ability to play pokemon while we drive, it's not really worth it. It is pretty tempting though.

I mean you have some valid concerns, but you really tank your credibility when you misrepresent the argument for driverless cars like this.

People are fucking morons on the road so a machine would actually know how to drive.

How driverless cars would effect employment is something to look into though.

The benefits are way more than just letting people dick around while the car drives them. If every car was driverless, there would never be a preventable accident, road capacity would triple, and traffic congestion would be practically vanquished. Rideshare costs would be cut to a fraction and bus service would be expanded exponentially.

Honestly, getting human drivers off the road will be the most revolutionary change to our society in a hundred years. Almost nobody would own a car anymore because car ownership would be pointless for the average person.
