80m~ people died in 6 years, thats 1.11m a month. Thats civilians and soldiers on every side.

the war stopped cause of the nukes, if the nukes werent dropped the war may have extended for months longer and more people would have died on the frontlines or as collateral damage.

its a bitter pill to swallow.

and it was the bloodiest and most costly war ever even before the nukes.

Before Germany surrendered, the plan was to use the bomb on Berlin. The idea that Truman had some fantasy of dropping nuclear bombs only on non-whites is a weird one. Put yourself in his shoes, you have an a new weapon that has the power to bring the war to an early end and a way to show off to the Soviet Union who are looking to be the major threat to the Western world in the post-war era. Japan was given opportunity to surrender but they chose to fight on. The alternative was land invasion. Japan thinking it could dictate the terms of it's own surrender is laughable. All three major powers (US, UK and the USSR) agreed that an unconditional surrender was the only one they were willing to accept. Imagine Germany telling the allies that they'll surrender if they get to keep Poland.

Who knows, we do know that Japanese soilders all over the pacific refused to aknowlage the war was over and kill lots of innocent civillians up 40 years after the war so it seems pretty damn possible. Still killing all those civiallians was bad.

You can make that argument and its one we were all presented with in school but I still think its insane to say that the bombs were dropped to save Japanese lives. If anything they were dropped to save Allied lives, not Axis.
