And yes, I know people have criticized him in the decades past for having never contributed to the black community during his height of fame and wealth, for being selfish and turning his back on his people in favor of being with the country club style white crowd, for spanorcing his wife and marrying a white woman instead, etc etc, but honestly? If I was born in the 1940s and grew up being mistreated by "the white man" and constantly getting negging by them, then suddenly being beloved by them (in this case due to some sports thing) and invited to their fancy parties and whatnot, I would probably abandon integrity and forget about my roots to join them too. Especially when we're talking growing up as African American in the 50s and 60s. So while I definitely still judge him, I do put myself through that frame of mind beforehand.
