My last dentist intentionally billed an entire crown to my insurance as just a basic dental filling because my insurance wasn't going to cover the crown even though it ended with him getting less money than if he had made me pay payments. Obviously there are dentists out there that are like that but it tends to be more of an insurance issue than a dentist issue. I've had bills go to collections (comcast) and it didn't do shit for my credit. That number doesn't mean much anyways. The fearmongering around it is wild.
