Gotta get this topic out before there's a fourth entry in the good Paper Mario series maybe?

I know, I can't believe I called Super Paper Mario a good game either.

honestly, my best case scenario for Origami King is that it lands somewhere around SPM, but I'm more expecting it to fill in the second gap

PM and TTYD are really close for me, 64 wins because I just think something about it is more charming and special and it just holds a more dear place in my heart, but TTYD is so wonderfully creative and inventive

Very difficult decision, perhaps part of why this original trilogy is so dear to me is because all are basically equal in how good they are in my eyes. It helps that I happen to like the alternate, platforming focus they took with SPM; I can understand why other big fans of the originals may not like it as much. Ultimately I went with SPM > PM > TTYD but it's basically SPM = PM = TTYD for me, putting any of them in last just feels wrong.

Meanwhile the following games I'm basically considering a different series entirely, considering the stark changes they've chosen to stick with. I've seen enough to still feel like The Origami King ought to be called Sticker Star 3, not Paper Mario. That's not to say it'll be another awful game, maybe it'll be great at what it does. But I still haven't seen much of a reason for the Sticker Star series to hold my interest, especially when these days I'd typically rather stick to indie games for a fraction of the price

PM vs. SPM is tough for me.

Paper Mario has the better gameplay/charm

SPM on the other hand has the far better story and humor

I think PM gets the edge simply for nostalgia tho.

I would replay SS in a kind of masochistic way (I never finished it). I never want to be reminded of SPM ever again.

Each time I replay TTYD, I find more little things that bug me. The first game is an absolute classic that holds up in every way except graphical fidelity

These are my thoughts exactly. They were really ambitious with a lot of things, but there's something fundamentally wrong with all but two chapters.

• Chapter 1 is probably as flawless as TTYD gets. Cool set-up, cool dungeon, cool boss fight. Simple.
• The tree's Pikmin-like sections are super annoying and all the rooms look exactly the same so it's really easy to get lost.
• The Glitz Pit is an AMAZING idea, but it just drags on waaaaaay too long. If there were just 10 or 12 fights instead of 20, it'd be perfect.
• The concept of having a bad guy steal your identity and your friends and making you reclaim this is genius, but the actual execution of the chapter is just running back and forth and back and forth between the chapel and the town. Yuck.
• Chapter 5 is pretty good overall, too. Flavio's great, the island setting is good, the dungeon is neat, and Cortez is pretty cool, especially the scene after getting the star. Another super solid chapter.
• The train segment isn't too bad, but Paper Mario 1 already did the whole mystery thing better and then tacked on the best dungeon in the series right afterward. TTYD did not.
• Just completely fuck chapter 7. Chapter 7 is dog shit through and through.

Paper Mario 1 has two bad chapters (4 and 6), and I love the idea behind Shy Guy Toy Box, so it gets a slight pass.

It's almost entirely the character and art design and how wildly it strays from not only established Paper Mario, but Mario in general. The gameplay is a big misstep also.

People like it for the story I guess, but I was too busy being repulsed by everything else to really get invested in it. Also Luigi plays a major role, and he should always be relegated to being a worthless loser on the sidelines

64 > TTYD, but both are great.
