If the season is torpedoed, hopefully the owners are identified so the fans can rightfully assert their displeasure at them.

Either that or it will be directed at MLB in its entirety, harming baseball even more than that strike in the 90s.

At this point it's 100% the owners' fault if there is no season because they have the ability to implement a season.

But lmao at people who act like this is a normal ownership vs. labor battle. I doubt many of them are even sports fans.

Didn't they already have a set pro-rated salary that was agreed upon, but then the players wanted more? I thought that's what I heard on ESPN but I'm not sure.

idk, I think the damage is done.

The players took a very, very hardline stance on being paid pro-rated salaries and the owners basically told them to fuck off. iirc, the players second proposal was like 600m less than their first and the owners was like 200m more, with contingencies surrounding being able to play the playoffs to get extra pay. There's obviously one side trying to make it work and one side just stalling.

I definitely think there's going to be a bloody strike/lockout after the 2021 season (when the current CBA expires) that will lead to baseball likely not being played in 2022. Sad considering it's easily my favorite sport and who knows if my team will ever do good again. It's only been 18 years, going on 19 of not making the playoffs.

The owners/players had an agreement in March that was for pro-rated salaries and the commissioner can set a schedule if the players/owners can't agree to a number of games. MLB has held the position that this only is in effect though if fans can attend the games in some capacity and it looks like there's no way that's going to happen this year. Owners continually tried to low-ball the players (I only remember the first proposal, but it was 50% of their pro-rated salary and it'd move up to 75% if there were playoffs. Think the second proposal got up to ~85% of their pro-rated salary if there were playoffs) and the players balked each time. After the last proposal, the players basically invoked that agreement and told MLB to tell them when to report and how many games to play.

I usually try to make at least one game a year considering I'm on the east side of the state now. My 7-10 hours used to always be glued to Root Sports during baseball season and now idk how to spend my nights. Especially since the kids were supposed to be starting to come up this year :(

Question for everyone:

Say Mike Trout played for your team. Would you prefer he tested the open market and took the best offer he received or that he take a paycut (or take an opportunity cost) to remain playing for your favorite team?

Because even though he still got a shitton of money, he did the latter. This isn't as simple as picking the side of the owners or the players, fans have their own side in this.

As a lifelong Marlins fan, fuck the Marlins. I cheer for them because they were my childhood team, but their owners have been cheap pieces of shit for the franchise's entire existence. They conned the taxpayers into building them a big, expensive stadium and then tore apart the team to field a cheap AAA roster with a payroll that's a fraction of other teams.

No team would pay Trout what he's legitimately worth every year. He's legitimately worth like $60m+/year if they paid what 1 WAR is roughly worth.

But if he somehow was playing for the Mariners, I'd want him to stay with us. Just wouldn't want him to stay in the AL if he left.

That's Jeffrey Loria for you! Sorry that you guys had a legitimate scumbag be your owner for most of it's existence. While Jeter might not have the most money, I'd assume you guys are in somewhat good hands now. Just sucks to have to wait it out to see if your team can field a competitive team. At least you guys have 2 World Series rings in the past 25 years, so can't be too sad for you guys.

When Jeter took over, they had Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcel Ozuna, and JT Realmuto, and he traded all of them away. They even had Yelich cheap for two more years and still got rid of him. So no, definitely not in better hands.

Those were basically the only years where they actually spent some money on free agents. The only other one was the year they opened their new stadium as a facade to trick the fans into thinking things would change, and they still had a firesale and shipped them all away the next year.

Does it even matter? Even if they do, the Marlins will just trade them too.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/25557502/jt-realmuto-trade-continues-stunningly-sad-marlins-tradition

Of the Marlins' all-time top 25 players by WAR, 23 have now been traded away, rather than held onto until they reached free agency. The other two truly are the exceptions that prove the rule: A.J. Burnett and the Marlins hated each other by the end, but Burnett made it to free agency because the "much-discussed" deal to send him to Baltimore "hit a snag" when the Marlins kept trying to throw more of their players into the swap. The other, Jose Fernandez, died in a boat crash before reaching free agency. The Marlins had tried to trade him too, according to former team president David Samson; it was the other team, Samson claimed recently, that stopped the deal.

The Marlins have literally never had a single good player that they didn't try their hardest to trade away before they had to pay up in free agency. They are the perfect encapsulation of how little the owners actually care about the teams they own compared to how much they care about their own wallets.

I mean Jeter also didnt have the money to be buying teams.

But Im talking more about player development and building the team. Trust me, it sucks to see good players get wasted on your team and theyre eventually traded/leave. Im a Mariners fan. I know how it feels to have no hope in your future because the leaders suck. But I feel good with Stanton (and co) owning the team and feel Dipo knows what hes doing in building the farm and whatnot.

Loria just saw the Marlins as a way to make money so its good that he sold. Sucks that Jeter was forced to trade anyone who made any semblance of money, but hopefully they know what theyre doing in building the farm and the culture.
