I feel like the J is more important. I mostly treat the PB as a stabilizing element just so the J doesn't taste overly saccharine

a sandwhich made with $1 peanut butter and $20 jelly will taste better than the reverse. So by that metric I would say the jelly.

The premise presupposes already that you have both peanut butter AND jelly.
The question is what is the better ingredient in a PBJ. It isn't asking what the better ingredient is on a non-disclosed sandwich type. So i don't care if you can make a sandwhich without jelly, we definitely have the jelly or it wouldn't be called a PBJ. And the quality of jelly is much more relevant to the sandwich experience. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Voted jelly though I always use jam since its superior. Bread, peanut butter and jam/jelly are all pretty important for making the sandwich, but the bread and jam/jelly have a lot more options available to impact the flavor of the sandwich.

Peanut butter is more important. You can get away with a lot of fruit variations in the sandwich if you have good peanut butter, but cheap, stale peanut butter will ruin even the best jelly.

Well then you're opening up a can of worms here. I would argue that the most important distinction on the PB&J, even IF the J is required, is smooth vs crunchy PB.
