I don't even get the difference

"He died of a heart attack due to a cop kneeling on his throat for 10 minutes so he couldn't breathe"
"He died of asphyxiation due to a cop kneeling on his throat for 10 minutes so he couldn't breathe"

They're both murder for the same thing

I'm guessing death by heart attack is easier for the cop to use as a defense in court? Because the implication is he might not have had a heart attack under the same conditions?

But I don't see how because it still happened due the cop kneeling his neck , it's the same action... it's still intentional murder

One makes the cause of death something the officer couldnt have known about and gives him a defense.

The other means it is murder.

That's not quite how the first coroner put it. It was something along the lines of "Floyd died due to a heart attack caused by poor health, the knee on his neck, and other factors including potential substances"

They were trying to frame it as the cop only had a part in Floyd's death rather than causing it.

The original autopsy pretty much said it was something no one could have seen coming and because he was on drugs. They tried to smear a dead man's name to get the police off the hook.

Yeah, the idea is to get people to think he might have died even if the officer didnt do what he did. Which would mean the officer didnt actually kill him and should be found not guilty(or have charges dropped)

If the cause of death was a heart attack, the defense would use that to argue that the actions of the cop were not what caused Floyds death but instead any pre-existing conditions or whatnot.

I don't know about that, but I do remember a bunch of people on r/medicine seriously doubting the initial autopsy. I definitely suspect some kind of foul play, whether he/she got paid off or had ulterior motives.

I'm sure the first one would be easier to throw out a manslaughter charge and instead a negligence charge filed (the officer didn't 'help' when he was dying vs being the direct result of his death).

Who did the independent autopsy? And how likely is it for two highly qualified experts to get different results? If the independent person was truly independent and highly qualified, and its unlikely that experts would disagree, this looks very bad for the original coroner.

Also, it was only one cop that stood and watched.

In another video released, 3 of them were sitting on him.

The original charge against the cop was third degree manslaughter; which basically means accidental death. This new report could definitely change that. At least the prosecution has something to work with aside from the pretty blatant video evidence.

Everyone knows if/when a person goes limp, you get the fuck off them, especially when they've already been subdued and cuffed. Anyone who has had any experience in martial arts training or MMA is told that day one; and the cop was openly being flagrant in the video.

But with the legal system you never know; Philip Brailsford got off for the filmed public execution of a compliant (innocent) suspect and the police force actually temporarily re-hired him so he could be retired (instead of fired) on medical leave and collect $2500 a month for the rest of his life.

Disgusting, but unsurprising.

It's laughable to think that trying to pin it on drugs or preexisting conditions could in any way minimize the brutality of continuing to sit on a man's neck for minutes after his pulse had left him.

this came up a while back when there allegations that a lot of forensic doctors were reporting that inconclusive DNA matches were actually matches to help cops get crooks

Not sure if ever went anywhere but yeah theres a lot of "hey this is a bad guy, he's a rapist, we all know it, just help us prove it to get him off the streets "
