My girlfriend calls it plastic cheese and hates it.
I love it. It melts well. It's pretty easy to use.
I have a plain slice on occasion when I want cheese but don't want to cut any up.

By American cheese are we talking about stuff like Kraft processed cheese? I would enjoy those and similar product on a burger or sandwich but when eating cheese like a second, I would prefer the real thing.

That's literally wrong. Cheddar is an actual cheese, while "American Cheese" does not meet the legal qualification for cheese.

So how do you know if someone wants Swiss cheese? Or Gouda? Or Muenster or Cheddar or Parmesan or Brie, etc, etc.

Naming after a region is different from naming after a country.

Look at your package of Kraft singles or comparable store brand. It probably doesn't say "American Cheese", it says "American Cheese product"

It used to just say cheese but pretty sure it says cheese product now.

I remember when they used to advertise it used real milk though, and it tastes the same as before.

So... What's the real truth I wonder...

I'm not the biggest fan of fake cheese but I do admit it hits the spot when you want something to melt into gooey goodness.

Unless you're making your own cheese, most commercial cheeses are basically the same thing. Although certain brands (cough... kraft...cough) definitely have more not-cheese ingredients.

I would ask for sliced or processed cheese in this case. Processed cheese was also first invented in Switzerland, so in this case specifically American is especially wrong. As with Swiss more specific name, Emmental, processed cheese should have been named after the local area its from.

Yes everybody knows the crappy individually sliced cheese sucks.

If you get american cheese from the deli it isnt bad at all. Not my favorite but good on a burger and other things.
