It isn't called that here because we don't name everything after ourselves or another place. "Sliced cheese" or "cheese slices".

My girlfriend calls it plastic cheese and hates it.
I love it. It melts well. It's pretty easy to use.
I have a plain slice on occasion when I want cheese but don't want to cut any up.

By American cheese are we talking about stuff like Kraft processed cheese? I would enjoy those and similar product on a burger or sandwich but when eating cheese like a second, I would prefer the real thing.

That's literally wrong. Cheddar is an actual cheese, while "American Cheese" does not meet the legal qualification for cheese.

That's literally wrong. It couldn't be called cheese without being 51% dairy...

Look at your package of Kraft singles or comparable store brand. It probably doesn't say "American Cheese", it says "American Cheese product"

It used to just say cheese but pretty sure it says cheese product now.

I remember when they used to advertise it used real milk though, and it tastes the same as before.

So... What's the real truth I wonder...

Unless you're making your own cheese, most commercial cheeses are basically the same thing. Although certain brands (cough... kraft...cough) definitely have more not-cheese ingredients.

Lucerne cheddar cheese
pasteurized milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes and annatto (vegetable color)

Land o' Lakes American cheese
Cultured Pasteurized Milk And Skim Milk, Buttermilk, Milkfat, Salt, Contains Less Than 2% Of Sodium And Potassium Phosphates, Tricalcium Phosphate, Lactic Acid, Milk Protein Concentrate, Enzymes.

Kraft American
milk, cheddar cheese (milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes), whey, milk protein concentrate, milkfat, calcium phosphate, sodium phosphate, contains less than 2% of modified food starch, whey protein concentrate, salt, lactic acid, annatto and paprika extract (color), natamycin (a natural mold inhibitor), enzymes, cheese culture, vitamin d3.

Cabot Swiss cheese
Pasteurized part-skim milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes.

Homemade mozzarella
milk, rennet, citric acid, and salt

Homemade Swiss
fresh milk from cows, goats, or both.
propionibacteria
Starter Culture: thermophilic or Rennet
2 Lbs. sea salt or cheese salt
1 gallon water
Olive oil

I would ask for sliced or processed cheese in this case. Processed cheese was also first invented in Switzerland, so in this case specifically American is especially wrong. As with Swiss more specific name, Emmental, processed cheese should have been named after the local area its from.

If you get american cheese from the deli it isnt bad at all. Not my favorite but good on a burger and other things.
