170 businesses looted/destroyed today, during a pandemic, during a economic crisis where millions of Americans are already jobless. Good job ruining your own economy and the lives of fellow community members, hope those TVs were worth it when your whole place becomes one big ghetto!

You know, I really should look in to how many businesses in Baltimore reopened after their riots. I know the infamous CVS that CE talked about never did.

And of course, CE is full of misanthropes that go "lol fuck them" well, it's not just CVS, Target, what have you, it's small mom and pop stores, AND it's jobs for the people IN the community.

The larger crime here is the total disregard for holding police to any sort of legal recourse. And by that I don't mean in any way to diminish the loss of life (or property, time, etc) due to these incidents. If they were, these incidents would flatten. Our entire criminal justice system is a mess.

If it actually got to the point the city government was falling apart, the state could call up the national guard to deal with it.

I would say if it got bad enough then Congress could authorize Trump to use federal troops to deal with it (as was the case in LA in 1992 and Detroit during their 1967 riot) per the Insurrection Act, but there's no way in hell Pelosi lets that happen.

It's historically referred to as a siege. But in the case where a city turns on itself, well there aren't a huge number of examples of that. Those that do can't compare to the current situation.

When the national guard, at least at state level, has been deployed at max capacity to handle the covid situation, it is not in any way capable of suddenly marching into a city to shutdown riots. A governor would look at the situation and ask "save the city or save the state" and the answer is obvious. If the state has the troops to spare I suppose, they clearly don't at the moment.

Some people dont think about tomorrow. I think that is the way to summarize these riots. People are emotional and incapable of thinking about consequences. Good job burning down the that big store because a police officer killed a black man, but think about all the Black people that worked at that big store that now either dont have a job anymore or have to drive to many miles further because they got sent over to another filial. Im sure he/she/they like driving two hours longer every day for 8/9 months.

The state will survive while the city is saved. Moreover, you don't need THE ENTIRE National Guard for a Riot, except maybe in the US Virgin Islands where the National Guard numbers a grand total of 758 people. Furthermore, having the entire National Guard activated makes it easier to march in since everyone is already assembled, you just break out the M16s and SAWs and send them in.

AND this is neglecting that any governor who doesn't use even a part of the guard to deal with the riots commits political suicide. Maybe Governor Walz can't run again and can afford not to care, but that still puts a black mark on the DFL in the election. The opposition will slam him with "Governor Tim Walz let Minneapolis burn to the ground" over and over. No one is willing to do that. Or if he does, eventually the Congressmen and Senators start bitching up a storm and demand Federal aid, and if they have success (a rather big "if" given Congressional approcal required for the insurrection act), then Trump calls up the state national guard and sends them in himself.

Point was that the entire national guard is likely already deployed. Who knows what their response capability is here.

Assuming they were in the city for COVID they're probably waiting for the go order, and that has to come from the Governor. Looking at history, I'd assume Walz is waiting for the mayor to say "Help me." like Larry Hogan tried to with Baltimore's riots. Now, if this spirals and the mayor proves totally inept at handing the problem, Walz will almost certainly say "Enough" and take action. The biggest difference is the Governor and Mayor are both in the DFL so there should be no reason for communication issues.

Also, for those wondering, DFL is the Minnesota affiliate of the Democrats. It formed when the Minnesota Democratic Party merged with the Farmer-Labor party in 1944.
