Like a story mode (without any of the expansions) to play through that you can do mostly solo, maybe trading some with people?

It looks like ARR has a main story...that doesn't require too much grinding? About 200hours to beat? High quality FF content not low-quality MMO content?

Yes FFXIV is very story heavy. In fact, almost everything in the game is locked behind the main story, or MSQ as it's known in game. And yes it's one of the best FF stories, especially as you get farther along. The latest expansion Shadowbringers is universally agreed to be the best FF story since the PS1 games. And every 3-4 months they add more story content. And on top of all of that, it's a top notch MMO. And while the story segments themselves are single player, you'll still run into players all over the world, and there are also dozens and dozens of dungeons in the game, most of which are required content as you work your way through the story.

Edit: Also the MSQ is 100% linear. In order to play the latest story you have to play everything that came before. So A Realm Reborn -> 2.x -> Heavensward -> 3.x -> Stormblood -> 4.x -> Shadowbringers -> 5.x

Currently the patch is 5.2, and 5.3 will wrap up Shadowbringers, then 5.4 and 5.5 will setup 6.0
Also, in 5.3 they are revamping ARR and 2.x to make it more streamlined and to remove a lot of the filler quests.

Oh and by dungeons, I mean 4-man instanced content. You'll be doing a lot of that, but, it's fun and that's how you get gear and stuff! There's also 8-man and 24-man raid content at level cap which is currently 80. And raids have their own separate stories.

Good description, that sounds great. I guess I'll be playing through this since the starter pack wis free...maybe buy the updates if I love it. Main issue with playing now is the subscription model, but since there's a main story I should be fine getting it for like 3 months and playing.

You can absolutely just play FFXIV for the story and drop everything else, it's a pretty good ride. The game is pretty good about not making you feel obligated to play once you've run out of things you're interested in doing.

Story is consistently amazing starting around the first expansion. It's not terrible before then, just kinda paced badly.

Some people are crazy. The story for ARR is fucking boring and shitty. It's extremely standard MMO go kill 3 goons, go talk to some dude, go fetch me coffee, go get that guy a beer, go look for his hammer, go deliver this message, with occasional dungeons. The normal mode dungeons are nothing to write home about either and of course with the game being not brand new, most people in any given run will already know exactly what to do and just be grinding duty roulette to level a lower level job.

Like, theres interesting bits in there but it's surrounded by walking half way across the continent 10 times and talking to 30 people about their snack shortage or whatever inane nonsense they have you doing.

The world is pretty interesting, the community is really nice, the dungeons eventually get interesting, but it's a very slow start that takes basically all of ARR to ramp up. I wanna say compared to most MMOs theres just a ton of walking and talking and not really that much fighting.

you will have to play for quite a while to beat ffxi's main stories because there's a fuckton of it and also just learning the game's controls and UI is hard

xiv made to be super accessible, xi isn't

I think the biggest problem with the game is the GCD it feels like molasses when you are first starting because for some reason they thought that the typical cool down between skill use WoW had was way too fast.

Once you hit certain levels things speed up but for some reason they were like 40 levels or so of slow as fuck cooldowns sure. Keep in mind I am speaking of the wait between using a skill into the next one, not the actual cooldown on random abilities.

ya, besieged was cool, but the plot was kinda booty is what i mean

besieged these days is hilarious because you're in such pimped out gear at 99 you can actually literally solo the whole thing..which is good, because the number of people who turn up waver between fifteen and two
