I also wonder if Undertale makes it by itself, since all the top games tend to come from the same handful of series, it seems possible.

I think Street Fighter has to be there, if not for its consistency in making every single contest variation we have.

GTA is up there in the decline. Putting GTA V being respectable this year aside for a second, the protagonists used to be decent midcarders on par with with the likes of Kefka and Ness. Damning praise, I know. But you look at 2013 where Vercetti got embarassed in the Trash Bandicoot match, a match he would have once taken with ease. Niko was an afterthought against a horse and and an alien. They would kill to be dropping nail-biters with Kefka again.

And you know GTAV is going to have no staying power when VI comes out.

See, I remembered it as Niko taking fourth place in that match, but I forgot it was Kefka that took last.

They'd still kill to barely lose to him now, though. And I don't think Michael/Trevor/Franklin would land ahead of them by much, if it all, despite GTAV being good for now.

He didn't do that great in 2018. Peach finished above Kefka in the stats despite having a common opponent.

Either way, GTA would still love to be going 50/50 with Kefka's worst historical value where he looked like cabbage and got sliced up by Crono.

Dissidia did wonders for all the low-range FF characters in general. Amazing what updated artwork and fresh exposure can do for someone.

All the 'mascot' character did amazing in 2018. People give Cecil crap for losing to Crash Bandicoot but Crash Bandicoot proceeded to get 47% on Big Boss.

there's a few ways to handle the Mario RPG games. I ended up putting Mario RPG and Paper Mario into a general Mario RPG category, since spiritually I think that's correct, and that adds up to #13.

anyway, 14 is Sonic. the single biggest surprise to me is that Sonic 2 is #26 in votes, the highest total for a game that made 7 matches. it's above Tetris (27), MGS4 (28), Goldeneye (29), KH2 (30), and Super Metroid (31). some of that is due to Undertale but it got less votes in 2015 than 2004 or 2009.

Yeah, that is a bit surprising. It seems hard to believe it outdoes MM2, 3, 9, and X all by itself.

Actually, transcience's FF list looks ordered by votals so if FFVIII is already down to 160k, then Zelda has a good shot here. MM, TP and WW were all in GotD so the top 6 Zelda games should all have very inflated votals.

It probably winds up being Zelda just because the top 6 are all in the top 20 as opposed to just the top 3 for FF. I don't think anything below FFIV adds a significant amount of votes for the series.

Just getting around to this topic and yeah, it is awesome.

I know this is from a few pages back, but Master Chief's 2007 run was something else. He was the ultimate 4-way machine: loved by 30%, hated by 50%, indifferent to 20%. That's an awful recipe for a 1v1 but the winning ticket for 4-ways.

These visualizations are sweet.

I'm happy I correctly guessed Solid Snake with more matches over Sephiroth. The thought was that Seph got the villains contest, but then had to sit out of the main bracket of the next one as a result. Plus Seph didn't go as far in the Battle Royale that one year.

Halo has never really had a deep run in a contest aside from GotD1 where it was in a fairly weak division. I think that's the only time any Halo game has ever made it past the second round. Doing poorly in 2009 especially hurts it.
