So Tifa and Pikachu have the highest "legit" win percentages of the non-Noble Niners.

Sounds about right. I'd consider those the two strongest Square and Nintendo non-Noble Niners. Maybe Luigi has an argument there, too.

I think SSBM might be fairly competitive due to GotD where OoT and FF7 were absent. The rallies against CT and Undertale in 2015 don't hurt either.

Well, Melee got knocked out in the 4th round and they were all 12-hour matches. I'd guess it finishes 3rd though.

I love this too. I was going to mention it and forgot. I considered trying to remove the rounds where no one moves but I felt like it would lose some context because you know exactly what happened there.

a game contest... yeah, I guess FF7 wins for sure, with CT or OOT second. maybe Melee competes thanks to the rallies since some of those 2015 matches had 2000s votals.

maybe I'll do it, but there's so many entries across the years that it would be a headache to tally.

I'd feel pretty good about FFVII and OoT finishing first and second. CT got knocked out relatively early in 2009 and 2015, and Melee got knocked out early in 2009 and 2010. FFVII and OoT getting to the finals in 2009 (which had the highest vote totals by a heck of a lot) would probably make the difference.

Actually, I'd probably take FFX and LttP to round out the top 5 (or 6, because maybe CT finishes ahead of them anyway) because of that.

I think Melee has to be up there, because while Melee went out relatively early in two contests, it still has one extra contest appearance over FF7 and OoT.

FFX should also finish pretty high due to GotD as well, and going far in 2009 probably means more than losing in Round 3 to CT in 2015.

Oh, like I said, I think it finishes 3rd. It's not quite the advantage the Villains Contest was because it was only getting 20-30k votes per match instead of the 50-60k Bowser and Ganondorf were getting.

well, here's something. I just sorted characters into what franchise they are from and then calculated their win percentages.

of the 186 franchises we've had, the number of franchises with a winning percentage is... 19, which completely floored me until I thought about it for 10 seconds and nodded along.

how many of the 19 can you name? some are obvious and I've revealed some in this topic. others are a little harder.

I'd guess all the Noble Nine franchises have winning records on the back of the Noble Niners themselves, so that's...

1. Final Fantasy
2. Zelda
3. Mario
4. Metroid
5. Chrono
6. Metal Gear
7. Sonic
8. Mega Man

And how many appearances do we have to take into account here? Is just one enough? Also, is Mega Man X separate from Mega Man?

Then I'd guess Pokemon, Witcher (if Geralt counts), Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Kingdom Hearts, Castlevania, Halo, Devil May Cry, Kirby, God of War, Portal, maybe?

A few of those are probably wrong though.

10. League of Legends is just Draven + one loss from Teemo
11. Witcher because its just geralt
12. Halo because (I think) its just Chiefs record + Cortanas 1 loss
13. I assume DMC is carried enough by Dante
14. Also Kirby for Kirby
15. Portal for that winning Cube + decent Glados
16. Did any MK character make it in other than the two ninjas? If not, Mortal Kombat.

Im pretty confident about those. I think Street Fighter might be in there too. Still thinking about others.

I'm curious which franchises named were wrong by the way, I'm guessing Street Fighter and Resident Evil at the least have thrown enough duds out there to end up with losing records

I thought Ryu went deep enough times to counterbalance the times the characters lost in round 1, but I could see that one being wrong.

looking it up, Ryu is +7. I dont remember off hand how many random SF characters have made the contest before, but I dont think any of them have winning records (Chun is -1)

I know Akuma is -2, Bison is 0, Ken...probably has a losing record, Dan is -1, Poison is -1 since she counts.

huh I didn't realize Simon had even been in that many contests and Alucard went pretty deep in 2018

although he lost twice instead of once so that kinda hurts

Sonic is popular enough to get 3-4 characters in every year but Tails and Shadow lose in round 1 most years, and Knuckles never gets past round 2.

Hmm...It probably comes close. Squall, Vivi, and Auron probably aren't enough to balance out FFIV, FFVI, FFXII, FFXIII, and FFXV sucking, although they haven't had a ton of entrants.

I'd be curious to see what percentage of FF's total matches are just FFVII.
