I started working on a silly contest project, mostly around vote totals. before I post that (I'm not done yet), here's some contest trivia! I'm not going to give answers for a day or two so take your time answering. I'm going to give options so you can just bold your responses.
a few guidelines first:
first of all, these questions relate to official contest matches involving character battles from 2002-2018.
to be clear, this includes "second bracket" types of matches such as the Tournament of Champions or the winners/losers bracket from 2018, but does not include bonus battles such as L-Block vs. ? Block or Link vs. Jay Solano.
it also does not include any results from the rivalry rumble.
a 'win' in the fourway contests means that you advanced, not that you came in first place.

Which franchise has been in the most character battle matches? (Sonic | Mega Man | Pokemon | Chrono) [Pokemon is definitely up there, but Sonic has a decent base of characters that always get in, and has always been strong, whereas Pokemon being hated until 2006 limits its options]

(Dante | Master Chief | Aeris | Yoshi | Yuna) [They can't be that far off, but I'm liking Dante because he lacks the SFF beatdowns that Yoshi or the FF7 crew might have.]
Which of these Pokemon characters has received the most total votes? (Charizard | Mewtwo | Red | Missingno) [Combination of both the 2010 and 2013 runs is what I am thinking. Zard was the only character who went far in both contests.]
Which Noble Nine member has the least number of contest matches? (Mega Man | Sonic | Solid Snake | Crono | Mario) [Having a bad 2010 and 2013, and not being featured in the battle royals in 2006 has to make it Crono.]
Which "kain" has the most contest votes? (Kain (Legacy of Cain) | Kaim Argonar | Kane | Caim | Kain Highwind) [THAT'S GOTTA BE KAIN! THAT'S GOTTA BE KAIN]
How many characters have received less total votes than Tanner? (0 | 4 | 11 | 28) [A lot of 2013 fodder drew less total votes, but got way more of the percentage. But I don't think that number is 28 either.]
Link has the most votes in contest history. Who is second? (Cloud | Solid Snake | Sephiroth | Samus) [Don't feel that great about this answer, but Cloud being #2 to Link is always a good guess.]
Which franchise has the most character battle wins? (Half-Life | Fire Emblem | Portal | Mass Effect | Mother/Earthbound) [I'm counting on ME's 2013 crew actually pulling a couple shockers here, alongside Shepard always being good for a win making the difference.]
Which perennial contest failure has received the most contest votes? (Kefka | Tidus | Magus | Donkey Kong) [Tidus has a luxury of winning some key matches when votals were high, I think.]
How many of the top 25 highest voted characters were developed outside of Japan? (0 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 9) [Can't be much, considering almost all of the slots go to Nintendo and Square alone, with Capcom and Konami holding a few.]
The worst winning percentage for a contest character who has won a match is 12.5% (1-7). Who is it? (Lloyd Irving | Laharl | Ratchet | Wesker | Sam Fisher) [Ratchet has been appearing in the contests the longest, and I don't remember too many he's been snubbed from.]
Which of these Metal Gear Solid characters has received the most total votes? (Big Boss | Liquid Snake | Revolver Ocelot) [Poor Liquid Snake should try not getting snubbed, or I might be tempted to choose him here]
Which of these series' has had the most character battle matches? (Fire Emblem | Tales of | Xeno- | Starfox | Ace Attorney) [Fire Emblem seems to have the best balance of quanity of characters and strength. Ace Attorney and StarFox lack the strength from their support.]
Which 'sidekick' character has the most contest wins? (Knuckles | Zero | Yoshi | Vivi) [I think Yoshi has a better ratio of contest apperances and longest paths.]

Keep in mind for the first question that Sephiroth has the added bonus of being the only Noble Niner both in the Villains Contest and in the main contest in 2018. I'm kinda inclined to think it's him, even with not being in the main bracket in 2006. He has a lot of deep runs and not many early exits, even in 2013 when a lot of Noble Niners got knocked out early.
Also, pretty sure #2 is Zelda against Carmen Sandiego in 2006. I remember that being notable for being the first character to break 100,000 votes by themselves in a contest match.
Keep in mind for the first question that Sephiroth has the added bonus of being the only Noble Niner both in the Villains Contest and in the main contest in 2018. (Sonic | Mega Man | Pokemon | Chrono) - I know Pokemon did nothing in the early years, but the sheer number of entrants it's had (as well as the fact that it pretty much dominated 2013) makes me think it's taken the lead at this point. The other series have one strong entrant, one entrant who's good for a win or two every year, and the rest never win anything anymore. I'd guess...Sonic might be it if I'm wrong here.

(Dante | Master Chief | Aeris | Yoshi | Yuna) - Aerith has always done well and never really gets blown out even when she loses. It could be Chief, I guess, because he had that big run in 2007.
Which of these Pokemon characters has received the most total votes? (Charizard | Mewtwo | Red | Missingno) - Mewtwo had that deep run in 2008, and none of these other guys were in a contest when vote totals were that high. Plus, he went deep into 2013, too.

I can't remember if they've missed a contest since their debut other than 2006.

Vivi only got good recently, and Knuckles has never been past the second round. Zero's been up and down, but he's probably 2nd place.

yeah Leon is right. I didn't even glance at series, and I skipped game contests because so many games get excluded each time thanks to game of the decade 1 and 2.

Who has been in the most character battle matches? (Link | Cloud | Sephiroth | Solid Snake | Samus) My gut reaction is Sephiroth because of Villains, but I know he got retired after that so he's effectively missing a couple contests, so I'm thinking it has to be either Snake or Samus. I feel Samus gotten further overall than Snake (Snake did better in 2008 but he was weak in the first couple contests + Samus did better in 2018), so Samus is my answer.

Plus he sucked in the recent contests, meaning he didn't get many matches in 2013 and 2018 where votals were low. Meanwhile, Link vs Yoshi 2004 is the type of match that would tank the others.

Cloud's the "obvious" answer, but he got retired for a good part of it so he's definitely in less matches than the others. Whether he can overtake them in votals is another thing. Sephiroth has Villains all by himself so he should be in more matches than Cloud, but he also faces the dilemma of getting SFF/LFF by Cloud. Snake and Samus I think have been in the most amount of matches but both are weak with Samus constantly dealing witth Link/Mario SFF/LFF. I'm going to roll the dice and go with Snake.

I think Ike had maybe 3 wins total and Lucina has maybe 1? Can't remember if I'm missing anyone else. Meanwhile, Portal has GLaDOS and Weighted companion cube so I think it should have maybe 3-4 wins each especially since WCC went on a run in 2008 iirc. Mass Effect is mostly Shephard and Garrus and I think it should be around 4 wins for Shepard and maybe 1 for Garrus. It's close but going with Portal.

Laharl's beaten Neku (probably only win) but has he been in 7 contests? Tales is the type of fanbase that'll get Lloyd in like 7 contests in a row and I feel like Lloyd's probably won one (and probably only one) match in his history so I'll go with him.

Being the "best" MGS character in 2013 and 2018 means nothing with such low votals. That said, I have a hard time trusting Liquid or Ocelot either so will grudgingly go with Big Boss.

(Fire Emblem | Tales of | Xeno- | Starfox | Ace Attorney) Feels like there's a period where every contest has like 3-4 Tales characters. The issue is that none of them win matches so they don't have much second round representation. Starfox might be possible, given Fox actually wins matches but I don't think Falco or Wolf makes many contests.
Which 'sidekick' character has the most contest wins? (Knuckles | Zero | Yoshi | Vivi) Complete tossup here. Just going with Zero based on absolutely nothing.
All of the characters in question 17 have indeed won 1 and only 1 match. That isn't a trick question in that regard. It's just a matter of which one of them has been in the most contests.
I forgot about MMX's recent success and WCC's success when answering a couple of those questions, so I might have missed those after all!

Between Snake and Samus, it must be Snake. Neither of them every left early, but I can think more where Snake for further than the opposite. I don't think Snake even needs the Battle Royale to beat her. Sephiroth is the wild card, but I think I'm sticking with Snake regardless. Seph was eliminated ASAP in the final part of the 2018 contest and the villains contest wasn't that big.

Bowser also has the villains contest, that could make the difference. Ganondorf should also be considered for the same reasons.

There is only one Guru of the Decade, and his name is azuarc. Congratulations!
1- Gut says it's not Link because of 2005/2006, but this feels like a trap. Also a later question says Link has the most votes ever. Gonna guess there are enough semifinals/finals for him to be in the top without those two contests. 2- Has to be from an early contest. Cloud actually won one of those, was in a lot of finals. Zelda/Draven are recent contest wonders. Samus didn't quite dominate anything as Cloud. L-block had a lot of votals but I suspect it wasn't quite of a consensus. 3- Kirby used to suck, Squall sucks now, Ryu has never been big, Ganon used to be known as the Zelda character who is not that strong. Bowser is the only one who is good across all eras, I think. 4- Pick the franchise that puts 10 characters in each contest. Pokemon. 5- Tifa and Vincent are historically the strongest, and iirc Vincent didn't appear in the first couple contests and started to suck in the later ones. 6- Default vote for the L-Block contest. I think it's got the highest voted finals too. 2007. 7- Cecil feels like someone who has reason to be in every contest, compared to others. It's old final fantasy, those always get nominated. 8- Average makes it tricky. I'm going with Yuna cuz she is one midcarder who doesn't quite have a history of choking I think. Yoshi does, Dante shouldn't be that strong, Master Chief is over, Aeries isn't that strong either I think. Or maybe she is? But Yuna looks like the harder guess to make. 9- It's Zard or Mewtwo. Mewtwo choked harder last contest. Going with Zard on a hunch. 10- Crono and Sonic are the most mistreated N9ers. Crono at least was in a final, Sonic wasn't. I picked Crono first, now I'm editing and picking Sonic. 11- Is Caim the one from SotC? Hope so. 12- The trap here is that old contests have 5x more votes than new contest, so if you got tripled in any contest after 2012 you might have had less votes than Tanner. So I'm going for the highest number. 28. 13- That's the question that spoiled #1, I think. Logic says it's Cloud, with the most finals and all. 14- GFNW. FE doesn't either. ME had one great contest and that's it. Mother kind of sucks too. Portal is from 2006, and has Glados, so probably won matches every contest since then. 15- Tricky. But I think Magus had one contest where he did great? DK had too, but it's a later contest with less votals. So Magus it is. 16- Too lazy to list. I think L-block qualifies (it's Russian). Otherwise I don't remember, but I wouldn't be surprised if the list was 100% Japan outside of that, especially with early contest having the most votals. Gonna pick 1. 17- I see Lloyd actually showing up in conversations as a character who has some strength. May be because of that. 18- Big Boss has the most contest strength. This one feels easy. 19- Which one has the old character who was probably in every contest and is a solid midcarder? Look no further than Starfox. 20- Yoshi is an epic choker. I don't recall Knuckles and "strength" ever being mentioned in the same sentence. Vivi was notable in 2013, so notable I suspect he was worth jack shit before. Zero is that kind of character who has reason to be strong since the dawn of time.

#1 and #13 might depend on whether the bonus matches/tournament of champions count. Because during the 2006 one, Link and Cloud were in all 5 days iirc, which is probably more appearances than some of the N9 members who actually made the contest.
Reading the other answers made me think Zelda's probably correct for #2. L-Block/Draven were 3/4-ways with lots of vote splitting against formidable opponents whereas Zelda vs Carmen is the type of match where Zelda can shoot for 100k.
Starting to feel like #4 could be Mega Man, but X wasn't allowed for the longest time, so Pokemon could still be more.
I don't think 2007 and 2008 are the best contests to rack up total votes unless you badly blew out fodder though. You're splitting the votes more, so I doubt it's that big a disadvantage for Bowser only making round two in those.
I ended up picking Tifa over Vincent in the other one. Getting to murder the female bracket 1v1 should be worth a lot.

Im not at all sure how many random Pokmon characters got into the last few contests, so it could be that, but Im pretty sure its Mega Man because it has one super good character (Mega Man) and two pretty good characters (X and Zero) and then Protoman has been there, and also it had a girl and two villains and Metal Man and I think thats it? Sonics situation is similar but I think on average the MM stuff is stronger than the Sonic stuff... so yeah

Even if you were finishing with only like 20% in those contests, you were still racking up more votes than most matches in the last few contests got in total! Having more matches to your name when vote totals were highest is a big advantage.
well, keep in mind that Links match was with I think Bidoof, Agent J and maybe Edgeworth. that match was historically awful for competition. we just got lucky that Link was there too.
Going to way overanalyze #1. Everything is based purely on my memory (which is not entirely accurate) so I could have some embarrassingly bad calculations here.
Broadly, an argument for Link or Cloud would be that they missed 2005/2006, but the tournament of champions/bonus matches in both years + the sheer number of finals they've reached still keeps them in contention. Also not trivial is who made more matches between Link and Cloud. We know Link has a headstart because Cloud got eliminated in the quarterfinals in 2002, but because of Loser's bracket in 2018, Cloud should have an extra 2 (?) matches (Link faced Ganondorf, Pikachu, Cloud, Zelda, Cloud. Whereas Cloud faced Alucard, Crono, Link, Crono, Mario, Zelda, Link). Cloud should also have an extra match in 2003 when he eliminated Link in semis. In every other contest, they should have an equal number of matches since they beeline to the finals. Well, all except 2013 and I'm not sure who got eliminated first. I know Draven/Mewtwo/Sephiroth and Draven/Snake/Samus happened after Draven/Link/Shepard and I know Squirtle/Pikachu/Snake and Draven/Snake/Samus happened after Cloud/Squirtle/Leon(?). So it ultimately I think Cloud wins by 1?
The argument for Sephiroth is villains (32 villains so there should be 5 matches) Sephiroth also made the main 2018 bracket, but that's misleading because he should have 4 matches (Wesker, Ryu, Ammy, someone else) in the main bracket but only 2 (Tifa, Mario) in the legends bracket because he got eliminated early, so the total 2018 number should be 1 more than Link. I think Sephiroth made it to the semis in 2013 after beating Kirby and lasted longer than Link/Cloud so he might gain 1 there. This gives Sephiroth a lead of 7 so far and the question is whether how much Link beats him in the other contests. Sephiroth has the same number of matches as Link in 2002/2003 combined and has 1 fewer match in 2005, 1 fewer match in 2010 and 2 fewer in 2006. I really can't 100% remember exactly when Seph exited in 2004/2007/2008, so the rest is a bit of guesswork. I think he made the semis in 2004 (where he lost to Cloud) and he definitely wasn't in the finals for 2008 (It was Snake/Link/Cloud/Crono I think). The big wildcard is 2007 since I can't remember if it was Snake or Sephiroth who was in finals with L-Block/Link/Cloud. I feel like its Snake who snuck by with Cloud/Seph LFF, so I'm going with Cloud > Link = Sephiroth (with Cloud winning by 1 match)
Finally, the argument for Samus/Snake is that they actually made the 2005/2006 main bracket. 2005/2006 should have 64 entrants iirc, so there are 12 matches up for grabs total. Let's start with Samus. Iirc Samus made the finals both times (I think Mario vs Samus was the 2005 final but not 100% sure) but got eliminated first day in tournament of champions giving her 13 matches total in 2005/2006. She also made the finals in 2013, giving her a lead of 8 ahead of Link for 2005/2006/2013 combined. She should have 5 matches (Tifa, Mario, Tifa, Snake, Mario) in 2018, tied with Link and 2 fewer in 2010. Now, I can't remember exactly how well she did in 2002-2004, 2007-2008 but I don't think she even made the semis very many times if at all, so I think she's last place by a good amount.
Snake made the finals in 2006 and went 4 days in the tournament of champions. I honestly can't remember how he did in 2005, but he was weak. So I think he was in around 13-14 matches in 2005/2006 combined? He also made the finals in 2013, giving him a lead of 8-9 ahead of Link for 2005/2006/2013 combined. Snake also had 4 matches in 2018 (Zelda, Auron, Sonic, Samus), which is 1 fewer than Link and 1 fewer than Link in 2010, but I think he made the final in 2007 and for sure in 2008. Like with Samus, I can't remember exactly how well Snake did in 2002-2004 but he was weak, weak, weak so I still think Link edges him out, but he's probably ahead of Samus.
In the end (based on my probably horribly wrong calculations) I think Cloud might have the most matches surprisingly.
Cloud > Link/Sephiroth > Snake > Samus.

(Cloud | Solid Snake | Sephiroth | Samus) While I picked Snake for question 1, he's also had some horrible performances in the early contests due to the Solid Shit sprite and generally crumbling against other N9 members. Samus did a much better job standing against them, so I have her here instead.

(Half-Life | Fire Emblem | Portal | Mass Effect | Mother/Earthbound) Pretty sure it isn't Half-Life or EarthBound and FE's only notable character is Ike. Portal has Glados and WCC while Mass Effect has Shepard, plus some of the side characters have won a match. Going with the latter.
Which perennial contest failure has received the most contest votes? (Kefka | Tidus | Magus | Donkey Kong) Kefka has the villains contest to help him (and he actually did well there!) Magus lost to a bag of sand. Tidus has problems getting out of the first round. Donkey Kong is probably close, but I think Kefka takes it here.
How many of the top 25 highest voted characters were developed outside of Japan? (0 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 9) I don't even think L-Block falls into the top 25, and barely any Western characters have had any contest strength in the early contests.
The worst winning percentage for a contest character who has won a match is 12.5% (1-7). Who is it? (Lloyd Irving | Laharl | Ratchet | Wesker | Sam Fisher) I definitely know Laharl has won a match, and he keeps showing up so he's probably lost that many too.
Which of these Metal Gear Solid characters has received the most total votes? (Big Boss | Liquid Snake | Revolver Ocelot) Big Boss was saddled with Mario for far too long, while Liquid Snake has made some deep runs, 2010 aside.
Which of these series' has had the most character battle matches? (Fire Emblem | Tales of | Xeno- | Starfox | Ace Attorney) I think Tales just takes this on sheer number of characters and Lloyd being in practically every contest since his debut.
Which 'sidekick' character has the most contest wins? (Knuckles | Zero | Yoshi | Vivi) Knuckles has a round 2 curse, Yoshi had some early exits, and Vivi was only good recently. Zero is the most consistent of these four.
Yeah, you had to have historically bad competition but it's also a testament to just how high vote totals were in that era.
transcience only made me more certain in my case by revealing what match Link achieved that in, because that one had Link achieve godly percentages.
2008 and 2007 had the highest votals, but they weren't leagues ahead of the contests right before them. The average vote intake even win you win a match those years is probably below what you get from losing a close match the years before it. So Bowser and Ganondorf destroying fodder in the villains contest probably makes a huge difference, as would Tifa tearing apart the female contest.
We'll see if it's enough to be in first, but the point stands.

The Villains Contest didn't have great vote totals, but Tifa running roughshod over the female bracket could make a difference.
Although part of me wouldn't be totally surprised if it was Aerith just because she's been in the most overall contests.
Also, Squall still has more contest wins than Bowser or Ganondorf despite the Villains Contest. Or he did at one point. I doubt they've blown past him though because it's not like they were making deeper runs than him consistently. I think Bowser has only lasted longer than Squall in a contest twice (2005 and 2018), and even then, it's only one extra win each. I don't know if Ganondorf has ever outlasted Squall.
The villains contest doesn't need particularly high votals for Bowser and Ganondorf to still net a higher vote total per match than you would on average in 2007 and 2008. Competition was that weak. They also did well enough on Sephiroth that the match might be in line with what you'd usually get in 4-ways.
Squall could win that one, but regardless of the outcome, I feel pretty confident you'd rather destroy fodder in the villains contest than advance in 4-ways in terms of vote totals.
Edit: it's not the contest to make a difference, but both Bowser and Ganondorf were division winners in 2018, while Squall lost in round 3 because he drew Zelda. Due to the losers bracket, that means they had at least three more matches than him each. Bowser beat Alucard, so I suppose four for him.

I feel pretty good saying that Squall has the vote total advantage in every contest except 2005 and 2018, and I doubt Ganondorf getting 20% against Link in the double elimination portion makes the difference there. You've got to hope the Villains Contest cancels out Squall's 8 contest advantage.
I have zero doubt about 2006 because I remember their matches. I feel pretty good about 2010, too. 2013 is always fuzzy for me (except Squall. I can tell you all of his matches ever).
Bowser and Ganondorf's biggest issue generally is that they almost never get high seeds, so they don't draw ultra fodder in round 1 like Squall does getting 1 and 2 seeds.
Just to use 2005 as an example, Squall drew Geno, Bowser had Chun-Li, and Ganondorf had Yuna. I'm not sure Bowser even wins 2005 by that much even with the extra match because of that.
