Now hear me out. I get a lot of developers this gen has concentrated on giving people what they "want" more and more, but something is lost in all of this. Just playing LA noire the world they built, I get there isn't much to interact with. but as far as storyteling and atmosphere and how players animate and their faces and all of that. As far as actual gameplay mechanics as well that stray away from the usual over the top action. Rockstar liquidated Team Bondi and fired them. I hope there are still developers left that know how to make good games.

It just needed more time. I could have been pulling people over with my police car. The cases themselves didn't need to be so linear and have so many inconsistencies in them. They could have had more things to interact with. But controls in games have become too over the top. Developers this gen are striving for twitchier gameplay and what we end up with lousy framerates and more "detail" and activities that aren't all that interesting. The graphics may not be as detailed but I'm amazed how clean and clear and refined the graphics look in this game. I've played all 3 rockstar games and the control schemes need work. I don't understand why any of these games don't use the left analog stick to run and walk like it was meant. Then pressing a button to sprint or whatever. GTA V, Red Dead 2 and LA Noire all suffer from this. I think other games might but it seems like they have gone the way of twitchy over the top control schemes that don't flow nearly as well.

I actually really love the atmosphere. They nailed that oldschool LA Noire vibe with all the car sounds and voiceovers and everything. This game also seems to do weather right and makes me want to explore even though there isn't much reason too. Hopefully developers haven't forgotten how to make good open world video games in this cyclical modern "realty" star world we live in. Gamefaqs can go suck a @#@# too.

I'm actually serious though. I've played Red Dead 2 and GTA V and honestly those games feel like a mess in comparison. Other developers are even worse. They still haven't figured out basic running mechanics in their games. GTA still has that GTA feel to it but as control schemes have gotten more complex and graphic detail their games suffer from it. As far as actual storytelling and games that aren't a mish mash of a bunch of nonsense too. It's because developers have sold out. There really isn't much to choose from outside of that. It's the same major developers. Ubisoft, Rockstar and Bethesda force feeding the same stuff.

I've got to disagree.

if there's one open-world title that didn't need to be open-world, it's LA Noire.

I think it's more just about individual thought. I think games like GTA appeal to a bigger demographic. But games have gone that route in general. I don't see games that really stray away from that much. LA Noire really does a lot right that other games do wrong. It needed more time but what is there is pretty polished.

L.A. Noire had something special with all of the very strange hidden vehicles, they were all actual cars and some of them were really, really cool. I just wish there was more reason to drive around and explore outside of unlocking those. Mafia had nudie pics from stag mags, that alone made me want every collectible in the game.

I don't mind customization, but a lot of dev time must go into that in other games. A lot of other games there is a lot of meaningless customization too. There is some of that in LA Noire but it's basically a stripped down version. I hope they make another one. I think if anything other games are more that as far as show and no substance. It's still a rockstar game so all the facial animations and hollywood stuff is that but it's done so well. I actually like interrogating suspects too because it makes you think and it will throw curveballs at you sometimes. They could do even more with that. I'm not saying it's perfect but it at least does something different.

I kind of agree with this. GTA5's world seems too big, and it annoyed me so much that every mission needed me to drive around town for 5 minutes first. Not to mention its so overwhelmingly filled with filler content (do I really need a minigame so I can stop and play tennis with my wife wtf is that).

RDR2 I didn't enjoy either, but I chalk that one up to just being way too slow-paced for my liking.

Lol I forgot about that, not gonna lie I also hunted for all those in Mafia 3 >_>.

Watch Dogs 2 was also a fun open world, they captured a ton of the San Fran culture and sights and it was just fun to screw around in, starting gang wars or getting innocent people arrested then jettisoning the cop car into the ocean.

The actual world they built is really good though is the point. It just needed more time and development. It should have been a really great game. Unfortunately we don't see any games like that. I think the mainstream games are really trash for the most part at this point.

I'm serious about the free running too. AC they use the analog stick but then they have it where x and o or whatever are free running controls where you can go up and down. They should have it where tapping x is a boost. Rockstar doesn't use the analog stick at all for that. I'm guessing there is some reason for it but they should be able to map the controls that way and none of the alternate controls do it.

Graphically as well a lot of games this gen, particularly open world seem to be thrown together. LA Noire for what it is it feels like a living world at times. It's also another IP that hasn't been done to death even though noire has been done. It's not original but it's at least different.

The Saboteur was actually good if you want a good shooter. And a mish mash of a lot of stuff. Lots of customization and twitch gameplay though set in a good world. It seemed pretty shallow otherwise. Sleeping dogs etc. But again all these games feel like pretty shallow shooters or fighting games with customization. Even Mad Max is like that. The Sabateur still seems like a mish mash of a lot of stuff. And I remember that game had terrible screen tearing.

What would they do if they made a part 2? I can't see those games really being that great. This is a problem with games in general.

I really liked LA Noire when I was playing it, but it's not one of those games you can pick up and replay. I loved being in that world and time period and I loved being a detective, but they just needed more time to put more into it. It was fun to drive around and look at the sites and feel like you were really in 1947 LA, but that only lasts so much.

And Phelps was too much of a stick in the mud and too wound tight. It was funny seeing the one time he tried to joke around and be laid back with his Hamlet impression and his partner and the coroner just stare silently at him until the awkwardness is over.

SPOILERS

When he eventually cheats on his wife he's just seen as an even bigger douche. Having affairs is a total film noire thing to do, but usually those characters are likable in other ways so it isn't too hard of a blow.

And then changing characters 2/3rds of the way through was weird. Maybe if we had seen more of Kelso it would have worked, but it didn't. And ending on the fire insurance scams and not the Black Dahlia inspired case was weird. The end message still would have worked.

I'm pretty burnt on gta v and rdr2 at this point. I'm usually always playing something off and on and open world games really didn't go the way I thought this gen. Games in general. They are all mass marketed and all the knock off games out there. They all kind of mix action with fluff. They don't really have that oldschool developer feel to them either. Like games like stellaris is out there even outer worlds or outer wilds but games like that are still pandering to the mainstream. LA Noire is actually prettty good, but I just say it's good. They could do more with the open world itself. The gameplay loop gets pretty repetitive too. I'm about done with the homicide desk on my second playthrough from last gen and starting to get a little bored.

I think modern games in general are bad and boring. These developers create these open worlds. But even racing games do that. The games themselves are pretty much trash. They still have these genres too where no one comes up with anything original. I get it. It's because corporations and marketing. But the lack of creativity out there is meh. They just throw a bunch of stuff in the same ip's they've been making for years.

This is what happens when developers are greedy and gobble up everything else out there and people don't even know how to make games anymore.
