AOC 2024 though. Old people can't hold back the progressives forever, especially if there is no "back to normal old DNC" anti-trump rallying cry. The part about anti-lobbyists is essential, it gives me faith that multiple anti lobbyist crowd-funded politicians are gaining traction.

When you're not taking big bribes it's only natural that you take a relatively "far left" stance in an incredibly right wing country.

Tbf I know she is funded largely by lawyer firms, but I also know she's hugely crowd funded as well, and won despite her opponent out-raising her 10 to 1, which is virtually unheard of.

I'd say the problem is tax bands not considering billionaires income at all. In the UK, the highest tax band is 100,000 at 45% when incomes go way beyond that. I'd be happy for the current tax bands to decrease if they added 45, 50 and 55% when approaching 1,000,000.

They have teams of lawyers that are paid to find loopholes so that they dont have to pay any taxes. If billionaires paid almost half of their income to the taxman nobody would be complaining.

AOC is a fucking moron so it's unsurprising that she's wrong about this as well as everything else. Taxes are general purpose and heavily prone for misuse, as opposed to funds specifically dedicated to a purpose. If somebody cares about a specific cause, it makes far more sense to donate directly for that cause.

The rest of AOC's crackpot insanity isn't worth covering, although once again it's worth mentioning that she would never win anywhere except a far-left district and her far-left views don't even represent mainstream Democrats, let alone mainstream Americans.

That's all well and good, provided enough people choose causes that actually help society run smoothly and not just whatever they like the sound of or what advertises the best. The latter is what tends to happen, which is why pandas happily continue to exist despite being hell-bent on their own extinction (I'm all for conservation and all, but pandas really have no business surviving given how poorly-adapted they are) while people starve in the streets outside the offices that helped to fund pandas' survival, or why we saw an amount of money go toward Notre Dame's restoration that could have fed the world for a year.

In theory, a government is elected based on its ability to make sensible decisions about which causes will best contribute to society's function. A government that fails to do so (whether by incompetence or by corruption) is voted out and replaced with a more capable one. In practice, of course, that's a very complex assessment that voters aren't very good at, and it's rare for there to be plausible alternative candidates that can be voted for to make changes (mostly because those that might get dismissed as "crackpot insanity," to use the words of somebody you might know). That's a broken electoral system, though, not a flaw in the fundamental concept of taxes. If you vote for better people and convince everyone else to do the same, taxes work just fine.
