Even without the gay issue, I feel like Buttigieg would have struggled due to his lack of experience. The ideal "Generic Dem" should be something like a senator or a governor, not mayor of a town with barely 100k people.

pete struggled with the black vote not just because he was super white or his policies, but also because support for gay marriage is lower among black people. If support for gay marriage is only at 50% in a phone poll, what do you think the support for gay presidency in a private ballot box would be?

I honestly think this issue is way overblown. It doesn't help, sure, but the argument was that Buttieigg would have done much better if he was straight, and that's what I'm disagreeing with. He was a bad candidate for plenty of other, more important reasons. Him being an inexperienced nobody with no accomplishments and having absolutely godawful outreach is more important to him tanking with black voters than him being gay.

The math probably changes in the general but people are gonna be more likely to suck it up and vote anyways and he STILL has more issues compared to the coveted "generic dem."

Are you serious? You're going to disbelieve her because she was late on paying rent?

It's quite common, and perfectly legal, for tenants to demand that their landlords pay them to leave, so that they can avoid an eviction lawsuit that would take time and hassle. Tenants have a lot of rights in California. If she was acting like this it means she was having trouble making ends meet.

This was not just "being late on paying rent." Damaging a unit and bailing on it and leaving the owner of the horse sanctuary with a $1400 veterinary bill aren't things that are totally fine just because she poor. And if this is a pattern of conduct then yeah, I don't find renting from somebody and then forcing them to buy you out when you never had any intention of paying them to be ethical either.

Even if she isn't a saint, that doesn't make her an unreliable witness regarding a completely different and unrelated topic. And at least in my experience/feeling, most people who don't pay rent or stick other people with bills are doing it because they ran out of money, not because they intended to from the outset. And that includes people who do make decent money but are bad with spending it and blow it on bad investments or an expensive lifestyle. They still aren't intending to hurt others.

Yes, there are exceptions like Donald Trump who have the means to pay and simply don't want to, but they are few compared to people who simply lack the finances to do it.

Kemp and the Republican Secretary of State cancelled an election for the state Supreme Court so now Kemp gets to appoint a replacement who will serve through 2022.

Vox details the scheme in more depth but basically the current holder of the seat, whose term is ending, sent a resignation letter dated effective in November, just a few weeks before his term would end. Kemp accepted this future resignation and then informed the Secretary of State that he intended to fill the vacancy by appointment, so the SoS cancelled the election for that seat which was scheduled for today. Both the Demcoratic and Republican candidates for the seat filed lawsuits to reinstate the election but lost in the GA Supreme Court - itself a weird case because 6 of the justices recused and thus 5 lower court judges were temporarily elevated to hear the case. The court's position is basically that because the retirement isn't effective until November, there's a clause that states an appointment may serve until the next general election that is over six months from their appointment and since the retirement isn't effective until November that means the next such general is... 2022, where they can then run with an incumbency advantage.

Basically there is now a framework that GA set that provided the governor and retiring justice are of the same party they can just re-use this scheme to turn a 6-year term into an effective 8-year hold for that party by submitting a resignation letter dated effective just before the end of their term at the end of the year. Vox even notes there's nothing preventing Kemp from appointing the guy who is himself resigning weeks ahead of his term ending to his own seat.

Guess they don't want to risk what happened in Wisconsin when they actually allowed people to vote.
