Which Hobby is more nerdy?

Settle this debate for me.

My friend says that comic collecting is less nerdy.

Collecting fgurines/toys is nerdier, but also cooler (more aesthetic).

Well, think of it additionally like this: imagine if it's books, or TV shows, which are very similar. Hell, let's take Game of Thrones straight up.

What's the nerdiest task of the three of these:
Collecting the Song of Ice and Fire book series.
Collecting all the BluRays of every season of the Game of Thrones TV shows.
Getting socks with the crests of each house on them.

To me, merch always says you're a bigger fan, which makes you more of a nerd than collecting just the series itself.

On second thought, it depends on what you mean by "collecting" comics. If you just buy what you like, read them, and keep them, it's a lot less nerdy than mint condition special editions in sealed bags or whatever.

Comics are way more nerdy. I know so many regular people of both genders and all walks of life who have Pop figures, but hardly know many with comics.

Figure collecting can fall all over the nerdy spectrum depending on the type, from super nerdy (anime girls) to not really nerdy (football players).

I voted comics because I think it's more nerdy overall but depending on the figures collected my answer could change.

I don't know if nerdy is the right word, but my gut says collecting figurines is "worse"

They take up more space and have less percieved practical entertainment. That makes collecting more of an intentional life commitment.

Secondly, while there is the "comic store guy" stereotype, there is also the "creepy doll collector guy" stereotype, which i think bothers people more at this point

Depends on if we're talking casual or serious.

Casual comic collecting is nerdier
Serious figurine collecting is nerdier

When it comes to serious comic collecting there's at least more monetary value involved when it comes to condition, so at least there's some kind of 'justification' there.

Yeah, it depends on what you mean with collecting comics. If we're talking about people who keep their comics so mint and sealed that nobody could ever read them, that's much nerdier. If collecting comics merely implies someone who has a huge collection of comics, but I could go there and read them and the person wouldn't go insane, it's much less nerdy than collecting figurines, which serve no real purpose aside from the aesthetic.

Merch is absolutely more nerdy because it's another layer.

You have to buy the comics first in order to buy figurines for the comics.

comics by a lot.

figures are something you can get a couple times a year to be a "collector."
a comic collector is someone getting them on the regular.

someone getting 2-3 comics a year a year isn't going to be viewed or called a collector. but if you get 2-3 figures a year the label may apply. if you break 4 it definitely does, which still is considerably less than what a comic collector would have to do.

comics are also something that are consumed in and of themselves usually too, whereas figures are just extras. this furthers the nerdiness since it means it's an ongoing hobby that demands continuous consumption, whereas a figure can be as simple as "i like her" or "i like that dragon." that continued situation gives comics extra points since it's not just the quantity but also the time and investment involved.

I think collecting comics implies going beyond just buying them as they are released, and I find that a lot nerdier. Your figures and toys can at least be shown, the comics are just stashed away. Like I know a bunch of people who collect amiibos and I wouldn't categorize them as ultra nerds the way I'd think of someone trying to hunt down a rare comic.

I'd argue they're both equally nerdy when pushed to the extreme, though. If you're blowing hundreds on either of these hobbies, you're a top level nerd.

I think maybe 10-15 years ago and prior, figurines would've been the nerdier hobby hands down. But as comics become more obscure, and certain figurines become more popular, I think the reverse is currently true.
