When you call the sheriff ahead of time to try to get your protest okayed, and they tell you. "Sure, but no visibly armed dudes there" and then you have visibly armed dudes there, you don't get to act shocked when it gets shut down.

Now obviously the response in shutting it down was over the top, but

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not saying the cops are right in this situation. I'm just saying... Maybe don't provoke them?

I think it's pretty clear they were pushing the limit here because they wanted to make the news.

"We just want to open our business because we're desperate for money...but also let's have an armed protest directly going against police instructions."

And as I've already said, it's not illegal to carry firearms.

Now I guess the position of the sheriff here is "The protest itself was illegal, but we were going to knowingly allow people to violate the law, so long as they agreed to give up some of their constitutionally protected rights while doing so. But since they wouldn't agree to that, we arrested them."

Which I don't think makes them look particularly good?

Actually, it's apparently not legal to carry anything but a licensed, concealed handgun on property that is licensed to sell alcohol in Texas.

Also, it sounds like the men weren't "in the back," but actually standing guard at the door right outside as an attempted show of force that the protest inside couldn't be shut down.

Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis said during a news conference Tuesday that his officers were alerted that the owner of Big Daddy Zane's in West Odessa, Texas, opened her bar even though Gov. Wayne Abbott's reopening plan explicitly mandated that bars remain closed. When officers arrived, they saw six men in body armor and armed rifles standing outside the establishment, according to Griffis.

That's not really a fair take by Silver. What the articles are slamming is that a call was released that showed the Governor admitted that every single scientific and medical report that came his way showed that reopening would increase the rate of cases, but they're doing it anyway. It's nice to paint it as "More testing = more cases duh," but that's not what the criticism is for. The criticism is that the Governor is now on tape admitting he knows the act of opening the state up will increase the transmission rate yet is just hiding it under "Well we're doing more tests so obviously cases will go up."

Right. But the issue is opening up before proper measures are actually in place to try and combat that. Texas has increased testing, but it's still below the benchmark even they, themselves, have set, and hospital capacity is dwindling.

Quarantining without a proper reopening strategy, both in theory and in practice, is definetly ineffective and wasteful, although I'm sure there'll be a variety if opinions as to how that came to be so.

the entire point was medical so the 2 months of closures have been 2 months that we've been able to ramp up production, establish supply lines, create new infrastructure, and be able to move items as necessary. we can now do a lot that we couldn't do before thanks to these 2 months.

definitely. it was always a concern too - there's good reason why i was constantly on that beat as it's so easy to mess up just one aspect in the food supply chain. right now it's beef shortage, then what? pork? chicken? fruits and veggies have also had unusually high prices over here too.

no, calling them "the dems" is because it's literally the dems in charge who decided it. of the entire party? no, this is a state issue. "the dems" can mean a number of things but will usually refer to those in charge of a matter which democrats control/have high authority over, which is exactly the case here. the dems here made this call. same thing happens when talking about state republicans too. nobody goes "oh that specific subsection of state republicans in the party," they just go "republicans."

Trump has basically blown this wide open. He keeps hyping easy stuff but it doesn't feel like Trump has any sort of overarching goal. Even Bush did, as much as I hate to admit it.

This thought came to me when I watched Iron Man of all movies. That film is so obviously a response to the Bush presidency it hurts (from what I've heard Iron Man's origin story was initially tied to Vietnam, so this was probably just a setting update).
