A hunter shot a seven year-old boy after mistaking him for a wild turkey, police say. The youngster and his adult brother were both struck on Tuesday while they themselves were hunting at Camp Creek State Park in West Virginia. Both were shot when a third turkey hunter, who was not part of their party, fired at something he could not clearly see, after believing the victims movement was that of a wild bird, according to Officer GW Wood of the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources. The youngster was life-flighted by helicopter to the Charleston Area Medical Center for surgery to internal injuries. His condition was listed as stable on Thursday, with police yet to release his or his brothers name. An update on the older siblings condition has not been shared, although he is believed to have been less seriously injured. Mercer County Sheriffs Office are currently investigating the shooting and deciding whether to press charges. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported that these will be dependent on the severity of the injuries ultimately suffered by the seven year-old. They have yet to release the shooters name.

We get this same story at least once a year. Deer, turkey, whatever. People hunting who don't confirm their targets before firing are a danger to others.

Should be involuntary manslaughter. he acted with extreme negligence and it resulted in a death. You dont shoot at something if you cant see what it is.

Thats why you wear hunter orange, especially when moving around an area where they may be other hunters. Very unfortunate accident.

See that's the problem....most people don't bother to learn. they just pick up a gun and go. And even if they learn the basics they don't care to follow them. This is why mandatory classes or something akin to what it takes to get a drivers license should be applied to hunting licenses at the lowest level if you don't want to apply it to all gun ownership...but for some reason people are against that. I can see a situation like this, in many states, being treated as just an "unfortunate accident" and this "hunter" will be back out with his gun in no time. That's just wrong. Even people who kill others accidentally in car crashes see some level of consequence with regard to insurance or their license depending on the circumstance. Anyone driving and killing without taking the mandatory classes and test first sees legal repercussions, but for some reason we don't do that for guns. And no, the 2nd amendment is not an argument because nothing i said prevents someone from attempting to own a gun.

Knowing what your shooting and what is beyond it is one of the core rules that this idiot ignored. He needs his guns taken away since he clearly is not responsible enough to have them.

You never shoot at sound or movement, target identification is a much when hunting and that is why hunters where bright yellow or orange to tell other hunters that your a person not an animal.

https://ahuntinglease.org/hunter-education-requirements-us-and-canada

Practically every single state already requires the hunter to pass a safety education course. The issue isn't this stuff being super complex or hard to understand. I mean, I passed a hunters education course with a 100% score when I was 12. The issue is, no matter what rules there are, or how many basic tests there are, or how much of this stuff should be common sense, there's always going to be morons that do exactly what they're not supposed to. And forget charges. If you (the general you, not specifically you) think it's a good idea to shoot at something when you're not exactly sure what it is, then there's nothing that can be done for you. You should be lobotomized so everyone can get on with their lives.

I remember seeing something years ago about these people who lived near an area frequented by deer hunters during the season, and for some reason they had a fake deer in their yard. During hunting season, they'd put an orange vest and cap on it. ^_^

I go hunting once or twice a year and every time I read this shit it drives me crazy. When I hear something, I take my rifle and look at what Im shooting. What does it look like? Does it look like a deer? Does it look like a pig? Am I legally able to shoot this animal?

After allllll those questions are answered, I continue to take aim and then fire. How in the holiest of FUCKS can you mistake a turkey for a kid!?!?

This always screams drunk or drinking. Maybe drugs. Maybe dusk but even then you shouldnt be taking a shot unless you can absolutely confirm the target.
Yeah, when I took my CCW course, one of the rules the instructor drilled into us over and over was never point any gun at something you're not willing to destroy.
