Besides some PS2-era camera wonkiness, this game has been a blast so far. The first boss destroyed me until I discovered the devil trigger button. Finished mission 4 before turning in for the night.

It's a more arcadey action game compared to its sequels. While flash is still a core thing, I feel like you get more out of it by playing efficiently.

I still enjoy going back to it and the almost RE layout of the castle.

You can definitely see the Resident Evil roots the most in the original game. Great series overall.

DMC3 = DMC5 > DMC4 > DMC1 > DmC >>> DMC2

2 is really the only actively bad game. DmC is decent if you play the DE. The rest are good to great.

I did not expect that to be so short...is there any reason to bother with 2 or should I go ahead and skip to 3? I was planning to just try out 1, 3, and 5 due to them being the ones I hear about. I generally don't have too much time for video games so is there any reason to play outside of those three?

The first game was pretty great, though the Nightmare boss was kind of a mess - half the time I went to hit the lights, Dante would seemingly be unable to target them. There are other games in this style I prefer, but this was an impressive early entry (first?) in the sub-genre.

DMC2 is worth booting up briefly if only to get a handle on how bad it feels and how overpowered the guns are. It'll make the jump in quality to DMC3 even more stark. It's even shorter than the first game but probably not worth playing through as it's generally ignored plotwise.

DMC4 does introduce a new playable character and his story and he's also in DMC5 so you may want to look into it. It's longer though and was rushed out so the back half of the game is literally going through the same levels as the first half in reverse. Probably skippable if you're pressed for time but I'd at least check out the cutscenes on YouTube to get a feel for Nero.

DMC4 is fun, especially if you got the special edition that adds 3 more playable characters.

The story in DmC is garbage but it's a fun game

DmC is a pretty darn good action game but it's really bad as a DMC. You'll probably understand when you play it, but it's still worth playing! 3, 4 and 5 are all some of the best action games ever made - especially 3 and 5.

I love the original game (despite the camera jank), something about its action and (especially) enemy/boss design clicked with me in a way no other DMC has managed (though I haven't played 5 yet). Have you played Bayonetta? It's definitely a bit of a spiritual successor to DMC1.

I'd honestly probably just skip 2 unless being able to comment on it yourself is important to you. It's quite playable/breezy if you want to check it out, and not too long (none of the DMC games are, 1 is actually one of the longer ones if anything), but it is bland.

I think DmC is a lot less offensive as a game now that it's 2020 and DMC5 has been released. Knowing that it didn't kill the DMC franchise and DMC4 wasn't the last game in the series should remove some of the hate.

Bayo 2 hits all the presentation notes but strictly speaking I think the original had the better game play. DMC5 took alot of nods from Bayo 2's style and it really really benefited it. Best in the series imo.

I literally stopped after the second mission. It isn't good, maybe if you were a kid you could tolerate it and think it's just "okay" but with so many great games for cheap I'd just skip the retcon if you have limited playing time.

DMC2's development is kind of interesting.

Capcom started developing it with a separate team and director without telling Hideki Kamiya who headed the first game.
Whoever they had working on it (the original director is still unknown but the team was the Capcom arcade team) did not do a very good job and eventually Capcom brought on Hideaki Itsuno to finish up the game with only 4-6 months to go before release
All they had to go on were several janky disparate pieces and in Itsuno's own words the only attack the previous team had finished was Stinger. The worst feeling and slowest stinger in the series, at that.
Itsuno managed to crank out what we got in 4-6 months. It could've been worse!

Afterwards Itsuno requested Capcom let him make DMC3 and brought along his team so he wouldn't be remembered as "the guy that made DMC2".

Itsuno going from a near fall guy for DMC2 to one of the most respected names in action gaming history is proof we're living on the best world line. Scary to imagine all the games that wouldn't have been made (or if they had, not the same) if he never inspired the world with DMC3.

I think he's also the reason DMC5 is so good - he made 3 as basically an apology for 2, and after the lukewarm reception to 4's rushed release and everything regarding the reboot, I imagine he went into 5 wanting to make up for those shortcomings.

DMC5 was good but I really wish I didn't have to play as V. It was a good attempt at making something unique in this genre but it wasn't for me. I would have liked more Dante options instead or another obvious playable character that was missing.

Also the red orb hat really rubs me the wrong way. Spending resources to use a weapon just made me never want to actually use it. I'm sure you get more orbs than you spend but ehhh just give me a normal weapon.

DMC2 is an incredible game if you look at it under the lens of "had a 4-6 month development cycle". That's really impressive! It's a bad game looked at it any other way, but hey.

Few other series have survived as many major pitfalls as the DMC series has. DMC2 is DMC2, and while DmC is a better game than 2 on its own merits (not a high bar to clear), it caused such a shitstorm among the fanbase and hurt the series' brand name so badly that it almost killed off Devil May Cry entirely.

I feel like I'm having more trouble with the first boss in DMC4 than most in the series so far? Dodging in this game doesn't feel as smooth, or maybe it's because this boss seems to want you to jump in the air where you can't really dodge...

Jumping > dodging in the series anyway.

Jumping has iframes on the way up and is generally the better option. Nero also doesn't get a dedicated dodge like Trickster gives Dante, although he does get Table Hopper which is pretty great once you master it.

If it's the room I'm thinking of that's probably the worst instance of that in the game.

DMC4 definitely shows that it was rushed out the door but I still love the gameplay that's there. Nero with Max-Act, the chargeable gun, and the Devil Bringer is just so much fun once you put it all together. It's worth looking into switching the controls around to make always having the gun charged and Max-Act easier.

DMC4 completed...besides a few bosses in the middle of the game, I really did not care for it. The enemy handicap feature is especially annoying - I only had it pop up during the first and last boss fight. However, since it triggered, I have no idea how you are actually supposed to beat the final boss? I always got him down to two bars and then he would spam a sword attack and then immediately shield. I understand it in something like Resident Evil 4 but I feel like the whole point of this genre is slowly figuring out what you're supposed to do, and the forced handicap feature literally removes that idea.

So, DMC4 is probably my least favorite game that I have completed over the last few years (while still being alright enough for me to bother completing, of course - unlike DMC2). The level design throughout was tedious, most of the bosses besides those in the middle felt more like damage sponges than actual challenges, and that latter fact is made worse by them all being repeated three times while the better bosses only happen once.

Also, something just felt off about movement in this game compared to 3. Like, things were smoother, but I also kept seeming to get stuck in actions I didn't intend. The downward slash attack was especially annoying here - so many of these lesser bosses require jumping into the air, but you can't really move forward without triggering the downward slash. I feel this is true about 3 as well, but none of the enemies in that game really worked in a way where you would be moving that way. I could have removed that attack, but it feels weird that this would be the best solution. So, the whole combat system seems based around fighting on the ground and then they decided to make half the bosses airborne...
