I think DmC is a lot less offensive as a game now that it's 2020 and DMC5 has been released. Knowing that it didn't kill the DMC franchise and DMC4 wasn't the last game in the series should remove some of the hate.
The effect Guilty Gear Xrd had on Blazblue.

For the last boss you're supposed to grab him out of his lunge with the Buster to finish him.

There's actually several things you can Buster that you just have to figure out. For instance you can catch Credo's spear throw and toss it back. Timing's super strict though.

Credo is definitely the best boss in the game.

Credo so good. Well, to fight, the character is nothing, as all DMC4 character are. Except of course for this magical scene.

https://youtu.be/JSEBAukcHaU

I generally do not like DMC4 either, though. Nero also sucks in that game character wise, everything about him screams Square Enix character in a bad way. And that back half...gross.

I recognize the mechanical strengths, but it's a bad taste in your mouth game. There are a lot of jankier, hell, shittier games I would rather play honestly, lol.

I would def recommend doing DmC Definitive Edition next before DMC5. I'm not an enormous 5 fan myself, but it would still be worth getting in the mindset of where the fandom was at with that release going into 5.

I actually like DmC MORE than 5, but it is incredibly easy to see why DMC fans wouldn't.

I care about aestheric a LOT, and DMC5 is basically all one environment stretched out through the entire game, while DmC has plenty of unique, standout areas. Really all it is!

I definitely did not like playing as V, either. Very neat idea, though!

Personally I much prefer DMC5's aesthetic as it morphs from Not London to demon tree. Don't mind the lack of variety and when it comes to DMC gameplay is VASTLY more important than aesthetics, and DmC is frankly kind of boring to play.

V is hit or miss but I personally think he's dope.

Have you payed the DE for DmC? It is a substantially different and better experience. If we're talking the original release, I would definitely put DMC5 over it.

Unrelated, just tried to find my copy of the DMC novelization because I got the sudden urge to read that garbage again because of this, only to remember I sent that thing over to the Super Best Friends like 5 years ago. Whoopsiiiiiiie.

I've not completed it but I've played it. It's substantially better than the original release but still just doesn't have the soul I'm looking for in a DMC game.

Is it? In the first and third, it felt like jumping was more about positioning and dodging. Which of the bosses expect you to jump before hitting them? I literally can't remember any from either game, while DMC4 has four.

DMC4 had a way higher focus on air combat but most of the mechanics are too complicated for the average player. I mean just look at a combo video for DMC4. Most players are probably just jumping up and doing a sword combo and falling back down. I agree that DMC is better when it's primarily on the ground instead of in the air.

Started up DmC, only through the first cutscene; earlier I commented on how the series kinda had this 'overly cool to the point of being dorky but ultimately charming' aesthetic. This opening scene also comes off as trying too hard to be cool, but it's so sexualized as to lose any sense of charm.

Cerberus, Nevan and Hell Vanguard in DMC3 at least (Gigapede if you count it LOL). Vergil 1/2, Dopple and Agni/Rudra I think getting airborne can be helpful/efficient (Vergil 3 I would tend to be very defensive in). Beowulf I'd use jumping mostly defensively, and against Geryon it's required in an obvious way. Extremely useful to be comfortable with air combos against the chess set.

Got through mission 8 tonight; it's nice these games are so short. I will probably invest more time when I get to 5 if it has bonus features like alternate characters.

The main reason I was checking out DMC specifically is because I've been going through a best of 2019 list where DMC5 was highly ranked and have always intended to try out the series. 2019 in general has been a weird year for me; Sekiro and Outer Wilds both feel like games I should have loved but found them more frustrating than enjoyable (Sekiro especially, after loving Dark Souls and Bloodborne...). So, I'm essentially still looking for my personal GOTY for last year (I also got Resident Evil 2 in this sale)

It's also a reference to the Spanish dub which is the best thing to come out of DmC.

This is the list I'm going off of:
Resident Evil 2
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Outer Wilds
Control
Apex Legends
Devil May Cry 5
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Death Stranding
Disco Elysium
Tetris 99
The Outer Worlds
Luigi's Mansion 3

Is it wrong that I hadn't even heard of a third of these? Did Outer Wilds get any discussion? If so, I must have confused it with Outer Worlds. And is Apex Legends a Battle Royale game I remember briefly hearing about? And what in the world is Control? I got around to Outer Wilds, but this feels like the oddest year I've seen on the site:

Outer Wilds got quite a bit of hype but also definitely got mixed up with Outer Worlds.

Control is super cool and in my top five for the year. It's from the same team that did Alan Wake and is in a similar vein of paranormal third person shooter but this time you also get powers. I really dig the lore and the world it's set in and want to see more of it.

Can't speak on Apex as it's not my thing but I'm fairly certain it's still popular.

Honestly, other than cringey dialogue, there's stuff I do like about the presentation here. The Bob Barbas boss fight and a lot of the other areas have a strong aesthetic; I feel like this would have been better received if it wasn't DMC. It's also hilariously easy, which I feel is another knock against it.

Still - there's been nothing so far I've found outright annoying like in DMC4 as far as level design goes.

Yeah it's not a terribly offensive game when it comes to the gameplay. I think the platforming sections are pretty well done too. If this wasn't named DMC I think they could have turned it into a franchise easily.

Although I believe the original game also didn't have a lock-on mechanic so the combat was considerable worse apparently. I could be wrong on that but I know there were some massive QoL improvements they made for the special edition

DmC is a pretty darn good action game but it's really bad as a DMC. You'll probably understand when you play it, but it's still worth playing!
Said it way back in the 11th post, lol.

If DmC had been released as a new IP it would probably be held up pretty universally as a solid entry in the character action genre and may have even had sequels by now. Hell, people would possibly even enjoy it for its downright comedic levels of EDGE. But calling it Devil May Cry just opens up way too many negative comparisons.

As skullbone pointed out, it's a hell of a lot easier to look at it positively now that DMC5 exists and it's not "that game that killed the series" anymore.

I'm also likely able to enjoy more since the series itself is ultimately 'new' to me.

It also feels like they could easily change this to being about a hacker and keep the aesthetics almost exactly the same.

The worst offender of a game getting hate for it's name was the game Nosgoth. It was a 4v4 multiplayer game where humans fought vampries. There were different classes with different item/skill builds and it had a lot of potential. There was a flying vampire that could swoop down to grab humans and then drop them really high and it was just fun.

The problem is that it was set in the Legacy of Kain universe and people were pretty upset that they didn't get a new "real" game. If they had just called the game "Vampires" or something stupid I think it would still be played today but it suffered a slow death instead.

Finished DmC...ultimately, I think I prefer it to 4 - it at least feels different enough to be it's own thing. 4 felt like a shadow of 3. Neither really compare to 1 or 3 - DmC specifically felt halfway between a CAG and the Naughty Dog style setpiece action game and excelled at neither.

5 is also worth revisiting on some point on the next difficulty up. It feels really tuned to account for you having a decent chunk of upgrades from your first run.

Plus Nero keeps his upgrade from the final boss fight so his kit is even more expansive.

I know you didn't like 4 very much but I'd recommend playing as Lady/Trish at some point. Lady is almost completely ranged and that's a unique playstyle in one of these games too. Lady takes over for Nero parts and Trish takes over for Dante parts.

Also Vergil is great in 3 and 4. You can play through the entirety of 4 as Vergil which is great because you don't feel like you're starting over when you switch to the Dante part.
