You know,I haven't seen a single sign or commercial or anything Thanking anyone in the construction industry. I don't consider myself remotely essential - yet, I am apparently essential enough where I have had to go to work every day since this thing started.

No. Its basically the "thoughts and prayers" route of not properly paying essential workers for risking our lives every damn shift we work. It's pretty transparent and its bullshit.

Yes.

I work for a major company, and they've recently put out a multi-million dollar ad campaign. And instead of the CEO spending that same money on a trip to the Bahamas, they used to to call me a hero. That means a lot to me, and I'll take that over anything.

Not to defend the companies that are legit screwing over their workers, but do you realize the impact even a small raise can have?

Let's say we have a company that has 100 min wage employee's working at 10 an hour, 40 hours a week. Numbers picked for ease of use. That's 40,000 a week in paychecks. If they paid them 1 more an hour that would mean 44,000 a week. An additional 4,000. At a time when a lot of Americans are unemployed and staying home and product is hard as a result.

I do agree that something is wrong with the American economy. I just don't think right now, when a lot of people are lucky to even HAVE a job and a lot of businesses can't absorb the impact, is the right time to complain.

Math? If you have 100 workers who work 40 hours a week that's 4,000 work hours you have to pay for. If they get paid $10 an hour that means you have to pay 40,000 a week in paychecks. If you raise it to $11 an hour that's an extra $4,000 bucks you need to pay.

We're currently in a time where a LOT of people are unemployed (and thusly have no income and potentially little savings) and what people still have money are afraid to go out or be close to other people. That means a lot of income is simply... not coming in for a bunch of these places that are open. So increasing the cost of employee overhead at a time when your store is likely struggling to survive is a baaaaaad idea.

Like I said, I don't wanna side with the corporation here since a lot of them do screw their employee's over. I just don't think now is the right time to be handing out raises to the largest group of employees; especially when doing so may bankrupt your company.

Yea. I know I'm doing it. I hate myself for it. But the fact is that, when you go out demanding you get paid more because you feel your job isn't just essential but demanding of respect at a time when most people are unemployed and terrified to go outside and companies, especially smaller companies, are struggling to get by... the entitled one in the situation isn't the company. You're basically telling all the people who are unemployed that you're not just fortunate, you're BETTER than them because you're job is ESSENTIAL while they were superfluous chaff. You're telling the small business owner who is struggling to survive due to the loss in income to go screw themselves because YOU want more money. Because it's all about you.

In any other situation I'd be on your side since I've been working the 'essential worker' jobs and been shit on by the company. I've seen nepotism happen, terrible employee's get promoted while hard-working ones get screwed, and everything else. Those were miserable years and I definately feel that the monopolies and the companies that exploit them are terrible... But right NOW I see people every day who just wish they HAD a job. Stores empty and devoid of people, businesses closing for good for a variety of reasons, and now the pizza delivery guy says he's better than them and deserves a raise. All while I've been surviving off of ramen and beans and am practically begging for a job so I can get some actual food in the house again.

Yea. I hate the big companies. They exploit their workers and are a huge part of why we're in this mess (their constant business exporting to China). But that doesn't mean you should go lording the fact that you have a job over the unemployed and demanding more money when it may not be feasible at all. I'd rather be exploited by Walmart and have food in my pantry than be sitting around all day with, like, half the nation unemployed.

also it's appalling that grocery store workers and food service employees have to keep going to work while watching people make way more than them on unemployment.

No. The job security was always part of the appeal.

A lot of it comes from a good place, but It's a bit annoying how much of a cop-out it's being used as and seeing where some money is being directed. Where I'm at we've had a wage freeze for nearly two years, but students (many of whom would not have been working anyway) have been deemed a higher priority than health care workers.

I don't like how it makes me feel. Seeing someone else get assistance in trying times shouldn't make me think 'That's bullshit,' but there's a lot of people who aren't being appropriately compensated for what they're dealing with right now (I don't include myself in that). I just hope that when all this is said and done, help (non-financial) is clearly and readily offered instead of being an afterthought or hassle to get. I have my doubts.

There's also a lot of people who are out of work that would take on the risks in a heartbeat. Protecting ourselves and our communities from diseases is important, but the financial stresses that a lot of people and families are going through are a health risk too. One that will linger well after all of this has passed.

Regardless of where you're at, stay safe out there. Take care of your community.

Aye. Agree there. I heard some woman had her employees get furious at her because she took out a forgivable loan to re-open her business because they were making more on unemployment than they were working.
