I'd be the first gym of the region. I'd use rock types. When the trainer beats me, I'd tell them if they believe in themselves and trust their Pokemon, they can accomplish anything.

Either electric, dark, psychic, or poison. Poison is kinda neat for the wide variety of options since it's a common subtype. And generally single-typed gyms are just cooler from a thematic standpoint.

If anything, I would say that this is done so that casual players have an easier time playing. What Pokemon really needs is a veteran mode. Have all trainer battles team roster swapped out to something more comprehensible and strategic. No first stage evolutions at level 50+ or or poor movesets that have clear superiors.

Back on topic though, would definitely do dark -type. They have been my favorite since they were first released. Don't care what anyone says, Tyranitar is number one.

Gyms are literally there to help trainers become better by providing them with a slightly harder than normal experience.
