Breath of the Wild's development cycle was so big that Zelda fans even seriously worried about the possibility of Nintendo giving up on that project, and they worried not only about Zelda's future, but on Nintendo's as well.

2017 came along, and Ocarina of Time's history repeated itself. Development hell -> game finally arrives and becomes one of the most acclaimed games of all time by virtually everyone. Miyamoto's phrase (horribly paraphrased, "Rush a game and it'll become forever bad; while a delayed masterpiece will be forever good") became true once again (subjectively speaking, of course).

Final Fantasy XV... only had development hell PLUS bad reception.

It makes me so sad that, despite not having the privilege myself of playing neither of those games, one got a happy ending (and bright future), while the other just added to past wounds, mourning for past glory days.

I really hope FFVIIR revives Square Enix and its fans. I really hope so.

Well you could still like the game and laugh at Nomura's latest fanfiction.

Also this has been true since like 2006. Twilight Princess vs FFXII would never be close.

The last Square-Enix game that I enjoyed without reservation was released in 2011

It's been a long time since they were doing great in my books

Yeah, the last time we could've had a hotly debated FF/Zelda matchup with the most recent games was WW vs FFX. The slide started after that.

Coincidentally, FFXII was also rushed and had a director change partway through! I think FFXII would've had a much better reception if Matsuno had been allowed to finish it the way he wanted.

FFXII: Zodiac is brilliant. That should have been the version released.

FF7R is a fantastic game. Best FF game SE have put out for nearly 15 years.

Its actually shocking how good FF7R is because of how awful most FF and KH games have been since the PS2 days.

But i don't give Nomura credit. He still tries to ruin some aspects. He needs to fuck right out of SE.

And after that is exactly when I stopped caring about Final Fantasy games.

Given its already universal acclaim and absence of any glaring flaws, it could've been worse for all we know. It obviously wasn't "rushed" either, based on how long it was in development and the fact that it was finished.

The amount of time something's in development has no bearing on whether it was rushed or not. FFXII's story clearly drops off halfway through. Another example is Mass Effect Andromeda, where it was being worked on and had builds scrapped for several years, but the final product was developed over the course of 9 months.

It's only clear this opinion wasn't held until after you found out about the development. The halfway point isn't even discernible.

And the game wasn't built up and scrapped repeatedly, with the final build taking just 9 months, so the comparison doesn't really work.

You could use MGS5 as a comparison instead if you wanted, where it took years to make and the ending's basically not there due to Konami's interference.
