Persona 4 starting to recover

Vice City put up damn good numbers on Melee in 2004.

GTA's strength has always felt like its critical reception: very strong initially, then dropping off a cliff as time goes on. GTAV has the argument of having GTA Online to prolong it, but I really think it has the trajectory that other major Western series have on here, like Halo and... well, Vice City.

It could totally win, but I don't feel that history favors it retaining its 2015 strength.

A Three House representative was always going to be in Smash Ultimate. The series has one of the largest cast of characters outside of Pokemon

FE is an SRPG. Its onyl going to be so popular

people dont like srpgs as much as traditional rpgs here.

with the amount of games it has the FE series should be stronger. Golden sun 1 probably beats 90% of FE games. Despite having two worthwhile games

i mean...if we're going just by popularity Pokemon go of all things would be near the top of the list

@WarThaNemesis2 For me there are 2 games that trully deserve GOTD. GTA V and Skyrim. Sure you may say there are others but Skyrim is the game that people still compare all other Open World Games that have come out and GTA 5 is the piece of media which has earned the most money in the history of mankind. And both game are still going strong.

I'm convinced FE3H > FEA because Console > Handheld.

DKC2 beat FEA 52-48, which is a narrow gap to make up, especially for a game like FE3H that put 46% on RE2 back in January.

Would you trust DKC2 to score higher than 46% on RE2?

In a year where Mega Man X is worth 45% on FFX and SMRPG is stronger than the entire MGS and RE series, I'd easily take DKC2 to put 46% on RE2.

If you think GTA5 has fallen off since 2015 (although I would argue today's results indicate it mostly hasn't) that's fine, but I also saw posts saying it would have lost to RDR in 2015 and no, it 100% would not.

I honestly don't see how you can look at today and be confident in Persona's chances going forward. Today is its worst case scenario for results.

If we're saying Skyrim should be up there, so should Witcher III and BotW. Both should outsell Skyrim in the long term, both open world gamechangers.

I mean if we're looking at it in the broader gaming "culture", it's BotW. With GTA there is an argument against the online component as huge as it became the response has been genuinely mixed. BotW meanwhile has done giant sales numbers (it has basically sold like a pre-V GTA game), has that top reception, and doesn't have a weakness like GTAV does.

lol It's not even a good game. Minecraft is the most popular game this decade and doesn't try to nickel and dime its playerbase. I don't play it but I respect its rags to riches story, it's worthy of being #1 of the decade. I wish it existed when I was a kid that would've been a blast to play with friends.

This reminds me, where the F is Roblox? That game is massive.

If "respect votes" in a Game of the Decade are a thing I could see GTAV benefiting. It was talked about during the last GotD contest, but I don't think it was a thing.

Personally I would take 2015 Shovel Knight over Cuphead so I don't see GTAV doing any better. The game did have strength back then though.

SotN >>> RE2 1998 I agree with you on.

But RE2 Remake is in a unique situation because it draws strength from its modern and classic incarnations.

If we held SotN vs RE2 Remake today, SotN would likely win because of the Castlevania TV show boosting it. But I don't see any reason to believe that pre-Netflix SotN (the 2015 version that beat DKC2 62-38) would be significantly stronger than RE2 Remake.

The problem is that BOTW is Switch/Wii U only which is quite a big weakness compared to GTA/Skyrim. Dark Souls is the other one I'd put on the deserve list though for different reasons of course.

I'd say the Switch defies typical platform exclusive limitations. For instance, Mario Kart 8 sold 23 million copies on Switch in just over two and a half years. That is a staggering amount for a single platform in such a short time, well above all but the heaviest multiplatform hitters. So if you're on Switch, there isn't an issue of reach. It's not like we're talking about a Wii U exclusive here.

Cuphead's legit. Cuphead has been consistently mentioned as potentially the strongest indie game in the bracket in every conversation I've seen so far...until today, when Cuphead being good is bad for brackets.

I honestly am not sure if there's a result today that will make GTA5 seriously. Its GTA and people picked Persona so there's nothing it can do to change people's minds.

That's a pretty good list, that probably cover like 95-98% of people's choices!

In looking over our nominated games,
I could see arguments for adding Ori, Xenoblade, Galaxy 2, Portal 2, and Arkham City.
I could see arguments for removing Clash of Kings (I'm assuming you meant the mobile game Clash of Clans?), Undertale, Mass Effect 3 (since 2>3 to most people), and REmake Evil 2.

I agree Cuphead is one of the strongest indie games, I just think Shovel Knight is the strongest which is why I went with GTAV in this match.

I've given up trying to predict Persona. I swear the series gets into at least 1 weird a** match every contest that ruins my bracket.

2010: Persona 3 upsets Civ 4, Persona 4 barely outlives Dead Rising to reach round 3
2013: Chie vs Jak vs Draven ugh
2015: Persona 3 gets upset by DQ8, continues second match cuse
2018: Joker gets upset by Claire. Pic controversy shenanigans.
2020: Persona 4 running the Rockstar gauntlet (in progress)

Well none of the other Mario > Smash brackets have GTA or Xenoblade winning the division and I have 3H, so I might as well just root for GTA here!

Imagine if someone had picked both GTA and Mario to win their divisions, though. They'd have a clear path to victory.

Hmmmm that's a fair point. It seems like a matter of perspective as to whether such impressive sales figures for these major Switch titles balances out (potentially) less accessibility overall.
