you should buy the definitive edition for $6 instead, since the events of Ground Zeros better explain what's going on in The Phantom Pain.

Eh it was alright. Problems with the story are pretty overblown. Definitely still problems, but definitely overblown. My big problem was more with being punished for having fun with the game.

Are you playing on PC?

If so, there's a small yet steady mod community that is budding. They're finally able to create missions and recently they were able to import the map from Ground Zeroes into Phantom Pain which gives me hope they might be able to create brand new maps down the line.

Also, Infinite Heaven can be a real game changer on a second playthrough as it unlocks a lot of restrictions Kojima made on the open world.

If not, well, 4 dollars isn't bad I guess.

it has an ending (that comes up abruptly), but there's one really annoying unresolved story thread, when you consider the game in relation to the rest of the series.

mission 51 ties it up, but the only way that you can see it is through YouTube, or something like that.

definitely
You can play (and should imo for a mixup) loud but primarily the most enjoyable parts are trying to go in stealthy.
Though some missions will be based around fighting a lot and you'll need to replay them agian to get the best score with gear you unlock to make it possible to do it without being detected.
Like misisons to capture trucks, early on you'l lbe fighting but later you get mines to just disable them

Story isn't going to bug me all that much because I think MGS' story in general is kind of silly and all over the place.
I've always been critical of the gameplay in these games more than anything. MGS4 and Peacewalker are my favorites mainly for that reason.

I thought that the parts where you come back to the base every so often for the story, or if you wanted to check up on some of the other characters characters, were fine, but otherwise, the base felt pretty pointless (outside of the online portion) and big for no reason, IMO.

Big disagree. It gives purpose and context to every bullet you fire, every cargo container you steal and every soldier you Fulton. It makes you think about each sortie you go on and what you need or don't need to bring with you. Its quite satisfying building an literall army and expanding your bases capabilities. It's Peace Walker on steroids and an Outer Haven simulator that makes you feel like Big Boss as you dispatch your mercs for profit and glory.

Metal Gear Solid V and Death Stranding have convinced me Kojima needs to stop making games.

There was no point in making MGS V open world only to make the open world such a fucking boring experience. "Oh, it's cause he didn't have time to finish" is bullshit because you can literally unlock all of the things he locked out of the open world in the PC version.

Death Stranding comes out and is somehow even more boring and lifeless than MGS V.

Kojima needs to decide if he wants to make games or movies and fucking stick with it.

MGSV's biggest problem was that they fired Kojima way before it was finished.

Not only was chapter 2 (3 if you count GZ) clearly unfinished af, it really feels like it wasn't even going to be the last chapter.

No, he had way too many ideas. I guarantee you the reason they fired him wasn't "I need more money to finish the project proposal I presented"; it was "I need more money because I just got this hilarious idea to add a mother base platform specifically for animals you catch in the wild."

This has been refuted so many times it isn't even funny. MGS V that was released was pretty much the game Kojima envisioned except his name wasn't on the box. The game was 5 years deep in development by the time Kojima was "fired". Everyone involved with the game who was asked has pointed out that Chapter 3 is literally the FOB post game and nuclear disarmament.

On top of that, Kojima Production staff have gone on record saying Kingdom of the Flies was halted years before release. I'm pretty sure Kojima himself has admitted this and said it was because it took away from the Venom Snake reveal at the end.

It does. Two, in fact, if you want to get technical.

Also it's kinda interesting that people lambast MGSV for having a weak Chapter 2 when that was exactly how Peace Walker did its story. You didn't get the actual ending for Peace Walker until you did a bunch of side stuff and some story cutscenes would suddenly happen. Exact same design.

Back in those days we still just goofed off in games sometimes instead of rushing through as quickly as possible.

There was lots of fun to be had in that area in Act 1 with the statue and that one area in Act 5. Very good stealth areas. Not to mention the control was so much better than in 2 and 3, and the boss fights were superb.
