The Dick Van Dyke Show was based on Carl Reiner's life and he even played the lead in a version of the show early on. When it was retooled into the show it's now known as, Johnny Carson was up for the role as Rob Petrie until Van Dyke's success in the Broadway play Bye Bye Birdie gave him the edge.

Actress Rose Marie almost quit the Dick Van Dyke Show in the fourth season when her husband of 20 years passed away. She was heartbroken, but a director talked her into continuing.

In the The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Mary Richards was supposed to be divorced. The network hated it and so did test audiences as they thought she was still the character of Laura from The Dick Van Dyke Show and it meant she divorced Van Dyke. It was then changed to Mary breaking off an engagement instead.

The kitten seen in the end credits of various Mary Tyler Moore Production shows was found in an animal shelter in Minneapolis. The production company's initials were MTM so the joke was a play on MGM and its grand lion. The kitten's name was Mimsie. After Mimsie's filming duties were finished, she went home with a crew member and lived to the age of 20.

There's an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in which Mary is in jail with a hooker played by Barbara Colby. The character was liked and appeared in a second episode in which she tries her hand at fashion and designs the dress seen above. The show had a spin-off called Phyllis based on Cloris Leachman's character. Colby was brought over to a co-starring role on Phyllis. Colby filmed three episodes before she and a friend were in a parking lot one night in Venice, California. The two were attacked and then shot. Colby died at the scene while the friend lived long enough to describe the attackers, but the men were never found. It's still an unsolved case.

Marge Simpsons long hair was originally supposed to hide a long pair of rabbit ears, which would be revealed at the last episode of the show.
It never ended, and they decided to skip it.
But they can still be seen in that old arcade game.

The 60s Batman TV series lasted 3 seasons, had two different actors playing the Riddler, three different actors playing Catwoman, three actors playing Mr. Freeze, and made Alfred popular enough to make him return to the comics (the comics had turned him into a lizard villain that died).
Batgirl was introduced in the third season to get more viewers, but it failed, and ABC decided to cancel the show.
NBC agreed to take over the production for a fourth season on one condition, they wanted the TV set.
Sadly ABC had started to destroy it one week earlier, and NBC decided to skip it instead of rebuilding it.

Kathy Kinney was only meant to play Mimi in the Drew Carey Show pilot, but her character tested so well that they wrote her into the show and Mimi remained throughout the entire series run.

Elizabeth Berkley auditioned for Kelly on Saved By the Bell but the part went to Tiffani Thiessen. The studio liked Elizabeth so much that they created Jessie Spano just for her.

Ro Laren was originally going to be Chakotay's engineer, but when Michelle Forbes was unavailable to reprise the role they created B'Elanna Torres.

Robert McNeill was meant to reprise his role of Nicholas Locarno on Voyager, but the producers realized they would have to pay royalties to Ronald Moore and Naren Shankar who wrote the TNG episode the character appeared in every time he was on screen. They opted to change the character and Tom Paris was born.
