Hinoka is one of the better characters in Fates, I agree. Makes me sad she's basically the ignored royal in terms of the story (since apparently she wasn't part of the original plan or something.)

otoh maybe that is the very reason she is one of the better characters in fates

5th Leo

Our final royal family character is Leo. Why Leo above everyone? Even Hinoka that I just super praised? Well he edges her out just barely here. Leo is a very smart character and relatively more deep than other one note Royals. He forgoes the sword because he knows he'll never be better than Xander and instead takes up magic becoming in story one of the most powerful mages, and honestly in battle hes one of the better mages despite mages getting big shafts in this game.

Leos encountered in all 3 games. In Birthright you have a cool duelish map with him in the forest at that which point he puts faith into you, something only the too naive to live Elise does. He makes his choice working out whats really going on. Its surprising as they let you perceive this character as head strong like his brother but its not the case.

Hes also the only Royal family member willing to just outright kill those who are dishonorable. While Takumi runs from his darkness, Leo embraces it but doesn't let it rule him.

Most of his conversations are approached with wisdom in mind. Really what falters him on this ranking like Hinoka is his lack of battle survival & power. The characters above here manage to have great design, are good in battle, and have interesting characters. Or you can just imagine we make him one of those broken dark falcon classes and hes instant #1

Also willing to kill a subordinate who won the entire war bloodlessly for him!

But yeah that aside, Leo is pretty good. Fates would have been better if it was about him and Takumi, without Corrin being around at all.

4th Kaze

Kaze falls into a literal strange situation in Birthright where he just outright randomly dies. I heard you can save him but uh well didn't know that til much later. Its a very sudden death and it shocked me as I was really into this cool ninja dude. Hes also the only character to surprise me in joining, wasn't expecting his join in Conquest. So most of my experience is based on Conquest and Revelations with him.

I feel like Saizo might be the slightly better ninja in battle but my Kaze was no slouch either. Kazes conversations arent groundbreaking but he listens to those he has dialog with, doesn't try to make them about himself. When others force the attention on him, he quickly tries to change the subject because his satisfaction really isn't what matters to him. He attracts all the village women because he puts kindness first, he lives to protect as evidenced when he throws his life away in my Birthright playthru out of freaking nowhere.

In his endings no records of him exist but the tales and legends of the people of the world have more to say than any official record. Its proof that his way of life left a mark with the people of the Fates world, unlike Azura who no one believes existed or really damn cares.

Edit: I think I may have said this in the original topic but eh, we can do with a refresher I suppose.

Sakuras real issue is shes young as hell and lacks confidence in herself. I stand by that in a sequel setting a few years down the line shed be a well liked character if they progressed her maturity

3rd Selkie

You might have your jaw on the floor here. Get the torches out boys and girls.

I encountered Selkie in both games she ended up being absolutely the best damn unit in the game. She has insane growth rates, insane luck, and is really near unkillable. Once I got Selkie, she basically patted Corrin on the head and said I'm Delete Button.

Her design is very clean, reminds me of the Final Fantasy Viera race except you know a fox mixed with red riding hoods clothing. So why Selkie here? Well shes boosted like hell by her battle skills but shes a fun free spirit. Even in her ending she never truly settles down. She can't be tamed, but not in a rawr i'm feral way, shes just a fun loving girl....girl fox thing.

Shes an impulsive character and does get herself into trouble, but she ends up helping these characters she accidentally wrongs. She shows her loyalty in repayment of wrongs or favors. Yeah shes a character that wants to have fun in a cast of misfits.

The funny thing is she wants to go meet the other Kitsunes and discusses this at times but her ending doesn't point to this. Somewhere in this mess of a game you get the impression that she finds 'her pack' amongst this army, but being a child character lol on that development.

2nd Selena

Heres the funny thing, I don't think Severa is good in Awakening. Shes kinda boring and entirely has an inferiority complex surrounding her mother. Something changes on her journey to Fates, and she ends up being a retainer like the other awakening kids that end up here. The difference with her is she seems to be using her experience from Awakening while the other two are in denial (Odin) or just not capable of real maturity (Laslow).

She honestly has some of the best dialog in the game, including getting Odin to shutup with his insanity and get serious in what might be the only time I've ever seen that happen in Fates or Awakening. Hes not the only one, characters she gets to interact with really open up to her more than most characters. A lot of these units from a dialog/story perspective only have one or two reasonable matches. Selena matches with almost everyone.

Yea despite her fiery personality she ends up using that not to be a pain in characters sides but uses it to break down their walls. The reasons shes not my #1 here is she is an average fighter. She is a unit that hits a peak midgame and just stops doing great damage, she doesnt die instantly but shes barely worth putting out to fight.

Also this got me looking at her a bit more from Awakening and why did all the child units in that game get unique endings depending on their spouse when everyone in Fates ending is so lazy

1st Benny

Benny is one of the strongest units in the game...and I don't know why or how! Everytime I thought Benny was toast he just ate damage like a champ, sometimes being ganged up on by 4 or 5 units cause I'm a bad strategist and he'd somehow live and take a few out. I don't play on perma death mode, sorry FE purists, and I never had Benny fall in battle. He just keeps going sluggishly 2 or 3 squares at a time.

Benny is the gentle giant, people think the worst of him or think he wrestled bears when hes just the chillest dude. I guess in some respects hes just here to serve a laugh in conversations, hes not great at them I'll admit. But the fact that people realize by the end Benny is just this gentle soul who loves nature is repeatedly a good moment

People continue to stereotype the man even in the ending trying to make him a captain and soldier trainer but he bails to live amongst the forest creatures in peace. If you have a female Corrin he marries her and people are terrified of him until they realize how hes the kindest soul that ever lived.

Yeah their are deeper characters on my list , their are stronger characters, their are even better designed characters. But none of them have the true pure good vibes this character does in what ends up being a splintered story told across 3 versions for $$$ that only makes sense if you play all three versions in a specific order. In a better Fire Emblem he wouldn't be #1 but having something grounded, sane, and reliable to turn too in a cast of castoffs and misfits is a comforting note to end on.

Selena/Benny is a very solid top 2. I wish Benny was recruitable in Birthright, since he's kind of overshadowed by Effie in Conquest.
