37th Nina

One of the last children I got and boy I am not a fan. Of all the children units that are complete opposite of her parents shes just kinda faking forcing it. Shes a thirsty character, thats fine I guess but man shes a terrible archer

36th Velouria

She is gross like her father but there is a bit more to her that comes out in a few conversations. She is a strangely better unit than her father in battle. There is just a lot more interest in humanity than her father has, and based on her parental makeup (no female parent wolves or monsters) its interesting to see this despite no forced conflict with a parent unit

35th Mitama

This might be the first ranking in retrospect I think hm maybe a little too high. Mitama kinda clicked with me and her lazy poet lifestyle.

34th Silas

Silas is Corrins friend....that he doesn't remember cause magic or deus ex machina dragons or something. I thought he was gonna betray us the whole game (a role served for another instead), but he really is just a noble low ranking knight. I wish more had been done with his background but his character interactions make up for it. He has pretty good dialog for the most part....except with Elise where it gets borderline creepy. In battle hes an average unit and I dig his armor look.

33rd Percy

So I don't know how much I love the super hero sidekick shtick they gave this kid, the design is cool though. Hes the opposite of Arthur on the luck side, right down to actual stats. I actually found him one of the better kids in battle, but yeah another character that lost tons of points for focusing most dialog (and very limited) around an animal

32nd Shiro

Ryomas son isnt the delete all units button his father is but hes up there. The real shame of this character is that hes a pretty deep character, infact I'd argue hes what his father should have been written as. Yeah the real shame is as a child unit he has only so much dialog interaction with others and most doesn't go enough places. His designs also a bit pedestrian considering his parental heritage.

31st Oboro

I married Corrin and Oboro in my first playthrough (Birthright for the record) and I was fine with that choice but the more I got to know her, the colors really showed in Revelations. Oboro hates Nohr for what they did to her parents but shes also just a flip of a switch from being very nasty. Also too many of her conversations are about wanting to be a clothes maker/designer, and that put me to sleep.

In battle? Oh boy thats a hard a pass shes not good. Her designs at least good.

30th Azura

I waited 3 games for Azura to show a personality, to show something. I got a little bit but not enough. So lets crack this egg first, Azura is a glass bottle. Most damage just outright kills her but she has potential to be helpful in a few ways which helps salvage her. Shes also with you on all 3 routes and early so you gotta make do.

Design? Fantastic
Singing? Fantastic
But even in deep conversations she really doesn't have a lot to show you. I found her dialog with the royal siblings poor for the most part. Also wasnt a fan how the game just treats her, even in Revelations, as some spooky ghost in the endings. Azura is the perfect example of how to create that mysterious jrpg girl but they don't give a punch line when games like Lunar and Skies of Arcadia hit home runs on

29th Rinkah

Rinkah did not fair well in any of my playthroughs battle wise. I couldnt get her to really ever matter shortly after shes introduced. Her damage output just isnt good enough to deal with her complete lack of defense. Design wise shes good, and then character wise I think shes a very smart character that well most people write off. The tragedy here is like some other characters on this list she ends up trapped explaining shes not a dumb savage for half the dialog tree.

I would have also preferred we dove ...any into her story and her tribe a bit more. It just seems like a lost thing.

28th Ophelia

Why do I like her so much more than Odin? She doesn't believe in the insanity her father does, and outright pretty much mocks him and teases him by naming spells. She definitely respects him but doesn't buy into his insanity. Unlike her fathers questionable destiny she has an actual ability to see the future. She ended up being very good for me in battle to my surprise. Yea her designs like bubbly Tharja.

27th Caeldori

I thought the daughter of Subaki would be pretty grating but I really enjoyed that she strives for perfection and realizes her shortcomings. Shes not the best fighter but shes miles better than her pathetic father. She goes to the Cordelia school of design. Her goal of striving to be not just perfect like her father but a better person makes her an easy target to like

26th Takumi

Hey its Kain from FF4! No Seriously, has any character since Kain betrayed the party more than this dude? When hes not double crossing the party cause of magic Takumi is a regular hothead but a smart one. Most characters in this type tend to be kinda blockheads but Takumi is almost down right scheming. Theres a line in one of the games about Takumi not needing much of a push to go rogue.

A rarity here as hes an archer that can potentially do a ton of damage, he was an outright delete button for me in Birthright....which I learned was more due to plot weapons than anything. He gets this ability late in Revelations but its a bit late.

25th Camilla

There is a lot to like here and a lot to not like. First off shes downright creepy when it comes to Corrin, sister or not. I do appreciate her family values and even her dialog with the opposite family in Revelations. Theres a real darkness to her though and I would have liked the games to really dive into that more, there is a super compelling character in here. Instead we focus on breasts and the fact shes designed like a cow. Battle wise not my top tier group but definitely that off the bench member.

24th Corrin

No, he was never gonna be #1. Corrin is like 3 different characters due to the way he/she acts in each game. Regardless of how they act, Corrin is a god tier battler and the armors super stupid looking in each.

In Birthright Corrin is about reconnecting with family and defeating evil. Their story arc here is focusing on overcoming doubt and I really enjoyed it. This felt like the version to play first.

Conquest Corrin drove me bananas. Loyalty was the theme here, and Corrin doesnt have blind loyalty to the corrupt Nohr king but they try to fake it and end up doing some pretty awful things. This Corrin from start to finish feels more cowardly even when they are at full war with Nohrs king.

Revelations Corrin is all about blind faith, it almost bites them in the ass a few times. I didn't hate this Corrin and this was the one route I had them marry Azura since it seemed to make the most sense, this is a Corrin who is bucking tradition, honor, and loyalty to do whats right.

My issues with Corrin center around that he lacks a lot of personality for a lead. Robin had the same memory issues and yet hes a much better character than Corrin, (and even better in Smash Brothers.). Corrin has real moments of connecting with people but a lot is spent with characters either not trusting him, questioning his history, or his values. But sure we will follow you to our deaths in battle dude

23rd Niles

Niles is a really bad dude, hes straight up a criminal and trends more evil than most retainers. While Beruka might be a killer she has honor behind that as dug up by some characters. Niles is just a sadist. I found Niles a decent bowman with a cool design. Hes not a character I exactly root for but his conversations are fascinating, including that he was supposed to kidnap the already insane Peri years ago

22nd Sakura

A lot of her character comes from her blaming herself for Corrins abduction at a younger age. I'm super unsure what her age is though. Sakura comes off not childish like Elise but more naive and seeking forgiveness especially from Corrin for what occurred. IIRC shes one of the first to join you in Revelations from Hoshidans because she harbors so much self guilt.

Shes a great battle healer and shes literal glass sadly. Her designs fine, like magical school girl meets ancient temple priestess. I think her discussions with non family members/corrin are the most interesting, she feels more comfortable with outsiders probably because of her guilt.

21st Kiragi

Remember how I said Takumi was a great archer? Yeah his son is better. His son is also more enjoyable to be around as hes more positive and less one step away from being tomorrows next top villain. I thought it was interesting once the responsibility of rebuilding his fathers homeland is over he withdraws to live peacefully in the mountains. Kiragi is limited by being a child unit but you generally feel his positivity come thru and his lack of respect towards tradition is interesting as he wants to one day wield the Fujin....something he backs out of wanting in the end

Rinkah is basically Missed Opportunities: The Character. Love her design though.

20th Asugi

He lost some points for me with his dad stuff but I liked him quite a bit. The ninjas just ended up being a lot more pleasant character wise than the royals when it came down to it. And for the children he is one of the better units, I made some great use with him in battle. His design though is a bit similar to his father Saizo

19th Effie

Effie is one of my favorite characters in fates at times but also not? So heres the deal shes a monster in battle which is great, her designs interesting but her personalitys a bit unexciting at times. There are characters she really has great conversations with but others devolve into literally just raging at characters that *might* hurt Elise. I guess cause they didn't really sex her up til heroes she was cast as not worth the time to write for

18th Xander

One of the strongest units in Conquest and a pretty strong one in Revelations. Xander has a great look, lots of power but hes a real unlikeable dude. His most interesting interactions are with his own family where his caring side is shown, otherwise I really enjoyed his conversations with the Hoshida royal family. Unfortunately those below him in nobility get garbage convos. And well main plotline hes kinda a dick in all 3 stories.

17th Ryoma

Ryoma is very similar to Xander. They are both delete buttons in their respective versions, and very strong units in Revelations. Both have cool designs, both are kinda stiff and angry. But both are family oriented. The difference is at least Ryoma is willing to talk to anyone.

16th Kaden

Kaden doesn't really fit into the main story well, and his reasoning for joining you is extremely vague. Hes a beast, literally, in battle and is a lot like the Keaton unit except nearly unstoppable. Hes also a really pleasant character in almost any conversation because of his happy free living attitude. In a sea of super cereal units that are blind to the truth, Kaden is a refreshing breath of fresh air.

15th Laslow

Laslow has the weird benefit of being an Awakening character who got developed slightly and then gets fleshed out here. Hes an interesting character and even goes into some real dark moments with certain characters (Beruka for one). The issue is hes a womanizer so they need to tell us that by wasting most of his conversations on it. The other downside is he kinda blows in battle, but hey hes likeable.

14th Soleil

Soleil is a lot like her father Laslow but shes more proactive in wanting to do good and help people. Honestly shes the one side character who could easily star in her own womanizing rpg. You don't get a lot of her but she has a great design and well like her father shes not the best unit.

13th Hana

Hana is a side character anyway you look at her being a retainer. She starts this game over protective of Sakura but thru her conversations shes one of the few characters to actually be challenged by other characters to grow and even gets an ending of going her own way while keeping her friendship to Sakura. I know its minor, and Hana is a low ranking unit. But I geniunely liked her and really shes the kinda jrpg character I want in my party. What did Ryoma learn this game? Don't be racist towards Nohr? In a game of characters set in their ways she isn't.

12th Ignatius

I guess people don't like him? Hes a beast of a unit, his designs a bit too pretty boy for me but I really dug this characters personality. Hes a kind character like his father with the aspect he is willing to throw his life down to protect the weak. He is afraid of bugs, and the supernatural though so he isn't long for a fire emblem world.

11th Midori

Midori is Kazes daughter and shes pretty adorable. But a lot of that is her personality. Her fascination with medicine is similar to say Hayato or Orochi except shes not a scumbag. Midori was a unit that ended up being pretty good for me once I steered her to Ninja and away from her base class of Merchant/Bad Healer. As one of the children she doesnt get a ton of dialog but hers isnt wasted and her desire to help others comes thru in her potion work. Whether they work or not is to be determined,

Top 10!

10th Siegbert

Siegbert has a terrible name but aside from that hes a super power unit being Xanders child. The difference here is I actually like this guy and he doesnt just sneak high for being strong. You could have told me had Fates been more popular and he got his own spinoff game, I wouldn't be surprised. Hes a lord who isn't above fighting on the front lines and who fights for his friends. Huh weird seems familiar.

For being a child character this character has a more complex relationship with his own sense of self. If there wasn't some rule mainline FE characters need blue or red hair you could throw this guy in. My only issue with him is his conversation with his own father is him just kissing his fathers ass.

Siegbert and Ignatius aren't exactly units I hate, but I find them really bland. They just kinda exist and that's it. That said, I'll admit I didn't give them much of a chance -- I never used them so I never saw their supports.

9th Kagero

The Boob Ninjas actual greatest asset is shes a really dependable ninja unit. She has a well sexy ninja design thats hard to hate to accompany her reliability. For me Kagero is the jrpg character that usually opens up halfway thru the game, the Sable to the other Ables (Animal Crossing references!). Except we don't learn enough, just really about her fascination with art and paintings. Shes a calm individual and a lot of her conversations show how lonely her Ninja life is.

8th Shigure

This is yet another character of, my parent had wasted potential but I do great at having a personality and not squandering my time. For a child unit he yes gets limited time onscreen and limited conversations, but Shigure is honestly the mostly knightly character in the game. Its just hes not afraid to have a gasp personality so he showcases his caring side and love of singing. Hes also the only child to have all of his deeprealm servants be slaughtered, and it does actually effect him. Most of the characters are about their drama moment but hes the only one to be hurt that they were killed and he survived. In battle hes the most dependable flying unit but hes still fragile

Unrelated to him but

"Records of his life are the only proof that Azura truly existed." always irks me though, Fire emblem has some shitty scholars.

7th Saizo

Saizo is a beast of a ninja unit and honestly might be the best for battle. His design is the badass one eyed battleworn ninja who lost his eye searching for his fathers killer. Saizo has some wonderful dialog with other units but his hold back is he gets super aggressive with units that he should have well better conversations with. Like his Azura conversations are downright nutty considering Azura has been living with the royals for years. Its this anti social and strange behavior that bring him down some, but his intelligence in other conversations really props him right back

6th Hinoka

Hinoka is a character that I quickly wrote off but began to like more and more as I delved into her conversations. Shes the second oldest of Hoshida royalty and has that blame herself for Corrins kidnapping issue going on. There is a lot to her though she has more relationship/connections to characters in pre Fates history than others, or at least willing to speak of it. She has some of the best conversations with the Nohr royalty in Revelations, and at the end of Conquest shes even proclaimed Queen. Actually her main story stuff is pretty good no matter the route. In Battle though shes a pegasus knight and they can be good and also easy targets. Shes super headstrong but shes a character that gets over it (for characters that really dont see most of the royal family on either side!)
