Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell suggested on Tuesday that the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump distracted the US government from the growing coronavirus crisis in China.

In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, McConnell said that the crisis "came up while we were tied down in the impeachment trial. And I think it diverted the attention of the government, because everything, every day was all about impeachment."

"Tom figured this out early, and he was absolutely right," McConnell added, a reference to Republican Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, who he described as the first to sound the alarm in the Senate about the situation unfolding in China. Cotton came under criticism for floating theories about the origin of the virus including suggesting that it might have originated in a lab in China.

Trump "fired the Pandemic Response Team"
This needs context. "Fired" is a strong term for what happened, and Trump recently created a team to lead the governments response to COVID-19.
In May 2018, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, the senior director of global health and biodefense on the National Security Council, left the administration. He was in charge of the U.S. response to pandemics.
After Ziemers departure, the global health team was reorganized as part of an effort by then-National Security Adviser John Bolton. Meanwhile, Tom Bossert, a homeland security adviser who recommended strong defenses against disease, left shortly after Bolton arrived.

The White House didnt replace either White House official or his team. Instead, Trump looked within his administration to fill roles for the coronavirus response.
In January, Trump appointed his Health and Human Services secretary, Alex Azar, to chair a coronavirus task force. On Feb. 26, he announced that Vice President Mike Pence would take charge of the U.S. response to the coronavirus.

I'll give him credit for banning flights from China.

If he had some intelligent people surrounding him, he could have enacted social distancing earlier. To hell with the media. It would have made him look competent after the situation in Italy got out of hand. But instead he decided to politicize it.

Those things pop up every few years around asia, and we've never had social distancing here before ever. And at the time that impeachment was ending, politically Trump couldn't do that kind of hyper-intrusive power grab on US citizens, people would have howled with outrage, I'm talking riots and "HITTTLLLEEERRRR" kind of stuff.

Actually no. And in fact, it say that he actually appointed someone for a coronavirus response team in January 2020. The duties of the "Pandemic response team" were reorganized. This is a left wing fake news talking point, and even politifacts agrees with me.

Again, every asian pandemic that pops up every few years is dangerous. Luckily none have hit the US in a big way nationally, ever, until now. No previous administration has ever done the things that liberals are now complaining about with Trump. Was Trump perfect? No. But I don't think his actions "caused" any spreading any more than any other president could have prevented it.
