I feel extremely incompetent at any game i play online. Less than one minute of gameplay and Im like Ill never be able to reach these skills.

I mean, you've got the wrong mindset? First step to being good at anything in life is to try? Experiencing and learning is half the fun, and debatably funner than exercising a skill that you're competent at.

That is irrational, is it not? Are you not making a gross annual salary of around eighty-thousand American dollars as some sort of physicist in the medical field?

$152,000 American gross as a physicist in a well known clinic. Honestly, my job isnt particularly difficult, its just very important we dont let big mistakes through the system. A lot of the job is quality assurance (measure things with a ruler and level, run some programs and take some more measurements). Make sure documents agree with treatment plan and nobody missed something that would compromise the treatment (chart checks). I think I did three integrals all of grad school and have barely used algebra since grad school ended \_()_/

I think Im becoming depressed. I cant seem to enjoy things anymore other than making/optimizing money (which is pretty limited outside of my W2/index funds these days) and seeing friends, who are pretty scattered across the country. Ive noticed the pattern start late undergrad but it keeps worsening. Have been debating with myself on seeing a therapist about it.

I usually have the opposite experience. I'll really practice a game hard before going online with it, then by the time I actually start playing it I realize a lot of people just go in flying their scrub flags and sucking super hard. I always blaze through the early ranks of a game because most people suck.

Play the same game/franchise for twenty years and you're bound to get competent.

I've played Smash Bros since the first game launched and I'd say I'm pretty good at it. Not a professional player by any means though.

I've always played all the games with pretty much the same three people.
We didn't play to get better(though that came naturally for playing so much), we played because it was so fun.
And that's the most important factor of any form of entertainment; enjoyment.

It makes me realize how much my internet connection sucks since even Animal Crossing wont work. The problem is its most likely the best available in our area for less than $100.

it depends on the game, but it's not always as hard as it seems. often, becoming good at something is discovering how easy it actually is. the trick is not getting discouraged during the learning phase.

but then, there definitely are certain genres that I will never be good enough at to compete online (RTS and fighting games)

thats honestly what helped me with undergrad and grad school. oh wait, calculus is a 1200 course...entry level for a math class, I shouldnt struggle in an entry level class, and boom, went on to get a math BS

Actually I think as I get older I realize the complexities and subtleties of things more, see theres a lot more that I dont know. Instead of just playing the right note for the right amount of time Im also thinking of the 30 different things that goes into playing one.

I use to feel the same. Then I realized that if I kept playing, I would get better. Like when I first played Splatoon. I couldnt even be on the winning team for the first couple of weeks. Then one day, I was on the winning team. Not only that, but I had the most points for our team. Then I started carrying our team in most of our matches. Even the ones we lost... It just takes time...
