The proposal, expected to cost around $1 trillion, calls for direct payments on a tiered scale. Individuals making $75,000 based on a 2018 tax return would be eligible for $1,200 payments, or $2,400 for couples filing jointly.

The payments would decrease for those making more than $75,000, with an income cap of $99,000 per individual or $198,000 for couples. The payments will also increase $500 for each child a person or couple has.

However, tax payers with little or no income tax liability, but at least $2,500 of qualifying income, would only be eligible for $600, or $1,200 for couples.

no i think its saying if you are below a minimum threshhold you wont get much. those people are either dependents or on disability/unemployment already.

i think what they are still hashing out is what most of us in the in-between are getting.

okay more info:

Under the plan, the details of which were revealed on the Senate floor by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., individuals making up to $75,000 annually would be eligible for a $1,200 check from the federal government.

The cash will be delivered in a one-time payment. President Donald Trump and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin

so yeah, this isnt that great.

I can tell you that I only made roughly 9K when I was working Taco Bell in 2016. What you posted from the article, up there, states that people that make at least twenty five hundred will get only 600 bucks. And even if I throw in 2015, I still didn't make 20K for those two years. I'd still get only 600 bucks.

How is that fair?

That part only applies to people who owe no taxes to the government. It looks like they are prioritizing people with tax liabilities.

So if you owed taxes after filing in 2018, you should get the $1200.

tbh this. i dont see the point in this. yes, it is going to help some people in particular situations, but it's going to help them for a very short amount of time. it seems like it's being targeted towards the most affected people during this, the workforce who is being interrupted during all of this, but this is obviously going to be a month to month issue for awhile.

it seems almost like a ploy for PR

Of course this could be solved if the GOP wasn't actively horrible(Moscow Mitch preventing a bill from going out just to spite Dems)....

Universal is of course the ideal option.

Just so the people saying "just make it Universal" are aware, Pelosi has at least implied that she will reject bills that do not include means-tested payouts. A universal relief bill will not make it past the house.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/17/white-house-senate-republicans-coronavirus-aid-133732
House Democrats have long said the payroll tax cut was a nonstarter but were also lukewarm to the idea of just doling out cash payments. When a former economic adviser to President Barack Obama raised the idea privately to Democrats last week, Pelosi shot down the suggestion saying she didnt want to write checks to millionaires.

As Congress considers the next steps, the Speaker believes we should look at refundable tax credits, expanded UI & direct paymentsbut MUST be targeted, Hammill tweeted.
