Rent in major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York etc is 2,000 dollars a month.
If your parents own their house and offer you a place to stay rent free, why wouldn't you live with them?
Because some goofy nerd online will call you a loser? Literally giving up 24,000 dollars a year so some guy online "respects" you.

I have a 80,000 dollar yearly salary and live with my family. What's the big deal honestly

I just googled rent in San Francisco and it's literally 3 to 4,000 dollars per month for a small shitty one bedroom apartment.

Moving is an option

I got a foreclosed property in the mountains, on 10 acres, 3 bedroom 1.5 bath for under 20k

My mortgage is paid off, I own it, all I pay is utilities, internet and phone

There isnt a stigma. Its just picking up a girl at a bar is a little more awkward if you still live with your parents because meeting the parents is something reserved for a little more down the line in a relationship.

As someone who didn't move out until considerably later (29), there is a stigma associated with it. Logical or not, people will assume that you're not as independent, have not matured as much, and have not dealt with the responsibilities of a person who has lived on their own. As I hit my mid-20s, I felt that stigma more, which is why I grew embarrassed over living with my parents and tried to never bring it up when out with friends. I doubt I'm the only one here who has felt that way.

And yes, it also sucks for dating and hooking up, but not just because of the awkward possibility of your date running into your parents. Your parents could be out on vacation a thousand miles away, and a part of you would still be embarrassed to bring a girl home to your parents' house.

Depends

real life people understand how much money buying a house/renting is

internet people not so much

I mean in real life I know people who earn 6 figures and struggle with rent etc. and everyone doesnt give these peeps shit about it because its understandable

Yeah, your own rent is different. Heck, having five different roommates is different. The longer you live with your parents, the longer you live with the people who have presumably taken care of you - and a lot of people (in the U.S., anyway) will make the assumption that they're still taking care of you and that you haven't yet become your own self-sufficient adult. It's why people who live with their parents beyond a certain age (generally their mid-20s) are often embarrassed to talk about it.

i dont know why you're acting like this something that only people online care about?

it's been a stigma for a long time that if you live with your parents you're kinda mooching off them

and yeah it is pretty goddamn difficult to date as an adult if you live with your parents for several reasons

also - dont you want time away from your parents sometimes?

U do realize 2000 per month is not even that much. That's how much rent would be for a small house in many cheaper parts of America

I don't think there's anything wrong as long as you're at least attempting to contribute financially and around the house. I moved out last year, but some of my family is welcome to stay if needed.

My brother and I are the main reason my parents can keep their house. They had to declare bankruptcy 3 years ago. My dads on disability and my mom can only work part time so it's not like I have much choice now because I don't want to be a bad person

Yeah why I was till recently. I still live with my mom but now I pay for all my own stuff and even pay for shit for the household in general. So now im more fuck it idgaf what people think. Soon we should be moving and when that happens ot wont be so much me living with her as we are just living together cause every thing will be split down the middle bills wise.

America is way to focused on independence and individuality. Parents are expected to kick their children out in the cold when they technically become adults at 18. It's probably started as a way to get more people to buy houses or something and it just continued and became a cultural norm. Plus add in some toxic masculinity ("Grrr I'm an independent manly man who needs no help!" "Ugh, you still live with your parents? What a loser!") and there you go.

It's insane how people still get shamed with how shitty the economy and jobs are.

I lived with my parents until 24. I had no issue living with them. And its honestly quite common these days because of high cost of living. I would rather live with my parents than rent an apartment with a roommate.

This. There's many benefits to staying with your parents, such as helping them in their older age and they giving you cheaper (or no) rent.
