I've been caring for a stray for a few weeks and she had babies 10 days ago.

Here's the damage.



I have no idea what happened. Did the mom try to eat her? She's been very caring so far.

They just fully opened their eyes yesterday. I'm about to start crying because nothing is open and the emergency vet place said it likely won't make it because she's too young and to just comfort her during her last hours. I felt like it was such a callous response.

I'm seriously gonna destroy something. I'm so fucking angry. This is not the first time I've lost a pet and it really broke me for months last time. I already became attached to them, especially her. The cutest little things I've ever seen in my life.

Yes, I've already done that and bandaged her up. They said she would need stitches and kittens that young will end up succumbing to Fading Kitten Syndrome anyway because of the stress. They said financially, it's not worth it, which is why I said it sounded callous. They wouldn't tell me the price either.

I'm sorry you're going through that. I grew up in a cat hoarding situation and kind of got desensitized to losing kittens but every once in a while, there would be the one I let myself get attached to only to end up with a gut punch.

TC wants to show us the horrors of what he/she is dealing with. i had to deal with a prior cat that had a wound. had to keep her in the bathroom so she couldn't escape. took about 3 days (back then very lousy at taking care of pets).

Just get a needle and thread and try to stitch the wound yourself. It will ultimately bleed out or succumb to horrible infection if you don't

I'm sorry for embedding that picture. At the time I was in a really horrible state and did not even think how bad it would look to everyone.

Things don't seem to be getting better. She's still alive, but yeah, being in NY, things here have just shut down. There's only one emergency place everyone is referring to and they already said it was basically fruitless, especially in the 30 degree weather.

It is definitely very deep. I'm guessing the mom clawed her open. Why? No fucking idea. Maybe it's because I was handling her more than the brother? I don't know how to stich. It was a mission to put the cream and bandages on it.

I'm trying to keep my mind away from it by staying drunk so sorry if I sound stupid right now.

i hate to sound morbid, but keeping it alive with a gash into its guts like that sounds worse than just putting it out of its misery. i know you don't wanna hear that, but imagine if you had a wound like that and the best you had was cream...

TC likely has no humane way to "put it out of its misery." Please do not suggest he kill this animal.

But what other choice do I have other than comfort her and change her bandages as much as I can? Just completely leave her so she dies faster? What if it still takes long?

She still seems like a fighter. She's not at the point of lethargy yet. But she's clearly in severe distress and her voice is frail and low.

I think the emergency place told me to let go because they're probably extremely overwhelmed right now helping people's actual pets. At the end of the day, the kittens are now hitting 14 days, and are the children of a stray when every stray this month is having babies. NY has one of the largest stray populations in the country. And reading more about fading kitten syndrome, it's very common even in healthy kittens. I already lost one to FKS before.

Thank you for your response, but I'm not sure what everybody means by someone helping. The person I spoke to was a vet. And most of the local vets are basically working at the emergency place, so it's not like they entirely quit.

My entire intention is for a second opinion after one professional told me the prognosis is very bad. I feel like the only help I can get is putting her down.

Nextdoor is a site that lets you post things by address, so only people in the same area see it - you can post almost anything, from "looking for a repairman" to "found lost dog". I'd post exactly what you've shared here - "I found and am caring for some kittens, one is hurt. Unfortunately all the vets I've talked to are already overwhelmed and could not help - does anybody have expertise with caring for hurt mammals? or have any other ideas?"

Thank you so much. I'm trying to make a post on nextdoor right now. I tried going with Facebook first.

However, I really couldn't figure out where to post on Facebook. I did find a woman a few miles from me in the process who updates on pictures of cat, dogs, kittens and puppies every few hours. They all seem like it's in her house. Says she's a cat/dog rescuer. I messaged her and hopefully she can provide some advice.

Thank you everybody. I'll provide updates and more pictures later, especially of the boy, who seems way larger than a 2 week old kitten, so it seems like he's doing great. Dude just spins around and yawns nonstop in my hands. It's the cutest thing ever. He's also changing from an all black/white cat to a brown, white and black cat, which is so weird lol.

Alright, so that lady ended up helping out quite a lot. She works with basically all the shelters and animal hospitals and she took it very seriously and told me to bring her to the emergency hospital and she had already spoken to a vet, so he knew when I got there.

I took her there and he gave me the same prognosis. That I'm likely delaying the inevitable, but they stitched her up anyway and the vet said the lady said to do it as cheap as possible because I sounded so distressed to her, so only $50. Gave me some antibiotics as well.

I know it's probably a waste, but I'm gonna fight for her. Keeping her warm as fuck. Playing with her. Just being there for her. I mean, I ain't got shit to do with this virus going around. If she passes, at least I tried, though it would be a massive heart break. I'm gonna bawl my eyes out. I'm really trying to prepare myself, but idk.

Anyway, I'm kinda shook right now because I came in contact with so many people today. People were wearing masks and I just felt this compulsion to go "are you protecting yourself or do you have it and trying to protect us?". I stopped myself though lol.

Some dude just basically stood right behind me and then when I was leaving, there were like 8 people hudled at the entrance with gloves on just talking to a boss or something. Like right in the fucking middle of the entrance. I actually said "too many fucking people" as I walked passed them.

Thank you everybody that a helped me with this. I will try to update more and provide done pics. He's a pic from last week of both of them. The injured one is on the right.

Animals are more resilient than people give them credit for, so I'm gonna say it'll survive now it's been stitched up.

You should have started a GoFundme, people love Cats. I'm a Dog person myself, but I'd have chipped in.

Glad to hear that lady was helpful and a vet attended to kitty!! I spoke to a coworker who does a lot of cat/kitten rescue work, and she had some advice
*Keep the kitten clean, dry, and warm - she suggested cutting small holes in the toe of a clean sock, sliding it over the hindquarters, and then cutting more at the other end to create a small jumper/onesie that still lets the mom clean/groom the kitten
*She didn't think the injury came from mom - from her experience animals that get aggressive with their young nibble on extremities first
*Keep the kittens together, but if you see them roughhousing (unlikely at this young age) separate them a bit so the stitches don't tear

Also, to echo 35. set up a GoFundMe - I'm sure you'd get support!
