I dont know how you could call yourself a vet with that kind of attitude. Idgaf what the statistics say, if a guy adopts an animal, its a fucking pet

and more than that, youve devoted your life to helping animals. Even if that means easing their suffering. Id report them to whatever board they operate under

Here are some pics of the boy. I haven't been able to really play with the hurt one, so I'll post a picture of her when I'm changing the bandage later. I'll also respond to the people who helped. Sorry for the gloves. As I said, the mom was found outside, so I'm trying to avoid any diseases. The hurt one is doing great, but definitely underweight.

I'm glad it's doing ok. Do the wet food suggestion for sure, try to keep some weight on the little bigger. Healing an injury that large in a body that small takes a lot of fuel. So keep her fat and healthy

@Ruvan22

Once again, thank you for your original suggestion.

Yeah, the vet said that she likely accidentally hurt the kitten and that if the mom really wanted her gone, she would have killed her fully and would not continue nursing, which she was when I discovered it and still is. The mom is a stray cat and has huge claws.

I ended up putting a cut sock around her, but the mom kept removing it and I gave up lol.

@DiztruxionUk

Yeah, one of the things that was stressed was to keep the mom nursing her because the milk has important nutrients that would help with healing and it's working.

I'll probably set up a GoFundMe as they get older and I have to take them for shots, fixing and adoption. Hope to get all three fixed and adopted out.

@EnragedSlith

I haven't adopted them yet because I found the mother outside and my plan is to put them up for adoption. I really want to adopt the hurt kitten myself, but I already have 2 cats and they've been with my GF at her parent's house because she's been living there due to the virus.

NY really has a horrible problem with strays and covid is really stressing resources and on top of that, lots of the rich people like vets left NY because of the virus. The vet I usually go to left back before they were even born. My block has like 20-30 strays and I've been hearing other kittens crying at night, so I'm guessing another 20-30 were born this month. I probably would have gotten more help if I said they were all mine, but I didn't want to misrepresent by not letting them know the mom was found outside.

When it comes to pets, their lives are sadly expendable. Every shelter around me is kill. The "no kill" one is very far. They just put them down, so when it comes down to John Doe who has had his cat for 15 years, and me with a kitten that's barely 3 weeks old, I understand the priority given.

@Bad_Mojo I tried Reddit and they told me to drive around everywhere till I found someone to help. I feel sometimes their advice is unrealistic. I also know most of the people here and just felt more comfortable posting here since there are lots of people that give good advice.

I'll be adding pics and more info once I get a chance. Once again, thank you.

Yeah, she's doing great and she's the first to start climbing out of the box. Found her hanging in the tub yesterday, where the box is. Put her back and she immediately climbed out again lol. The boy hasn't even left yet. Dude just rolls around like a lazy fat ass.

I'm not sure of their weights anymore because they are definitely not a regular breed and I'm thinking the boy has become overweight if anything. Hard to find information online because I have a scale and they're both over the average weights, but as I said, they don't seem like a shorthair breed.

For example, I got my first 2 shorthair cats at 7 weeks old (which is one of the ones that died) and the ones I have right now are 3 weeks old and are as large than them already. But the boy is about 40% larger than the girl.

Also the hurt one seems to be having socialization issues because I haven't been playing with her for over a week. She won't even let me touch her anymore and goes crazy screaming for her mom. The boy just rolls around in my hands and gets really excited when he sees me now.

this is something you need to deal with asap
right now is an extremely crucial age for kittens and socialization
if she doesnt become used to being handled by people now then this is going to develop into behavioral problems that will persist for a very long time
yes she might scream and throw a fit but as long as she is not in any physical pain then you absolutely should continue handling her, it will take a while but eventually she will calm down and not freak out so much
if shes old enough then definitely try coaxing her with meaty treats or things like that

This, but especially the last sentence. That is extremely important. You have to let her come to you and encourage her to. She will not get over it and could get worse otherwise. Might take patience. Treats and toys are very helpful. She will only learn to trust on her terms but you can help her to do so that way. Get close but not too close to upset her. Stay low so she isn't intimidated. Reach your hand out but let her approach on her time. These are all classic methods for cats/kittens that are anti-social from trauma (or just disgusting in general)

oh, and i forgot to add
make sure you try to handle both of the kittens at the same time. kittens absolutely get social cues from their parents and littermates so she needs to see you interacting with her sibling and mother as well

Thank you everybody including @DeathDeathSong and @Machete for the tips.

I've been trying all those things and they sadly don't seem to be working so far. Gonna keep trying, but the mother is from outside, and is very standoffish herself like Zikten mentioned. She however has a sense of gratitude and looks to me for help.

The female kitten though doesn't seem to like me at all. I used to feed a mother and her two kittens in my yard about a decade ago and I learned all about using your eyes to communicate. The reason I feel she doesn't like me is in the blinks. The boy kitten blinks slowly and with love. Like he loves me. Same with Mom. But the daughter blinks with worry like, "please don't fucking eat me, mommy where are you?"

As I said, I'm gonna keep trying. Thank you everybody to get me through this.

Hmm. It's good that the mother is taking to you. If the same tactics work for her, I would try getting her close to you and petting her and then trying with the kitten while the mother is there, as a sort of of "mom trusts me and is right here so why don't you try so at least she can protect you if anything happens" like sort of get the kitten to follow the mother's lead. Hopefully the more she sees safe, positive human interaction with the mother and siblings, the more she will consider trusting and joining in. Hopefully also she will feel more confident to try as she heals more, and that this will help her integrate with the siblings too. It might take a while and progress might be slow, but even only slight progress over several days would be promising.

shes, what, a month old? she still has some time to learn to trust people
just try to make EVERYTHING a family interaction now. if theyre eating solid foods now, the babies eat together. playtime? engage with the boy, direct the toy to the girl, then back to the boy. and even though she may not like it, you have to keep physically handling her. pick her up, pet her, try to hand feed her treats even if shes shrieking her head off. shes very very young so her limited life experience is screaming DANGER DANGER, but shes still young enough to learn to at least tolerate it. mom cat is too old to use that method but if shes okay with physically being around you, then you could try being in the room with her while she eats her dinner. dont engage with her or be all up in her face like you would with the kitten, but mom cat can come to associate your presence with safety and in turn she might lose some of her skittishness, at least around you

but also sometimes some cats are just naturally nervous. my nine year old didnt even let me pick her up until like three years ago, and ive had her since she was around 7-8 months old. cats are VERY finicky little people and sometimes it just takes a very very long time for them to feel safe

Glad that kitteh is going ok but you really shouldn't of been handling kittens that were that young when they have a mother, the chances are the mother smelt your sent on her and that's why it happened. Please keep the cute pics coming though ^_^.
