There's a pretty big difference between the moral fortitude needed to confront a gunman and the basic decency needed to confront a racist in your store. This manager failed her employee in just about the worst way possible. If you can't handle situations like this, then you shouldn't be a manager. It's really that simple.

I've worked customer service for nearly a decade. We've had police escort people out of our store. We had police come and make a drunk clean up a horrible mess he made in our bathroom. We've kicked customers out for getting inappropriate with our female employees.

Even if we lived in a universe where I had your absurdly low self-standards that would allow me to validate racism to employees under my care, I absolutely should get fired for doing that. I'm perfectly willing to accept that they "panicked" and made a bad call.

That's exactly what happened. Hell, one story I have from my Loss Prevention days, we caught people stealing red handed, corporate refused to prosecute people and wouldn't even let me call police. We got the merch back but had to let them go. These mother fuckers called corporate and complained, who knows what story they made up, and corporate actually gives them a $50 gift card and wrote up the store manager without ever even talking to us about it. That was the day I realized companies will never have your back

I don't think they are a racist, but they obviously made a really bad call and it's fair game to fire them for something like this. You have to make these kinds of decisions as a manager, and if you aren't up to it, you shouldn't be one. Hopefully they learn from this and if they still decide to be a manager, correct their flaws.
