If you can solve a problem equally with less resources, you should do it. That's all I'm saying.

Becoming known as the company that kept on a person that caters to racists in a managerial role costs a lot more than firing him and getting a new manager, which actually costs, what do you know, nothing.

Even if that means catering a racist.

In the hotel industry they expect you to take abuse from customers. You'll be written up for talking back.

Then you sue them, they settle out of court and you live your life

Has it occurred to you that firing him might actually be all the incentive he needs to improve?

I can see both sides of this argument to some extent, though I know that I wouldn't be able to work under the guy after he pulled something like that. I also know that having fired people before, especially young people, I've sometimes done so mostly to try to get them to see that they need to better if they want to achieve anything.

I've said multiple times that firing him may have been the best action in certain contexts. We don't know the context though. So until then there's reason to believe that either could have been the better decision.

It actually costs thousands of dollars to hire a new person. Up to ten thousand or so.

I don't know the history of the manager at the store, so it may very well be the case that this incident wasn't the sole reason they were fired.

Why won't you address that no company would ever want the PR that comes with keeping on a manager that caters to racists?

Not trying to escalate is BS. Everybody knew what was going on here and any decent human being would have asked the costumer to leave out of respect for the employee that was being discriminated against.

I'm not really understanding why you chose to respond to my post with this. Not trying to be difficult. Help me out.

This topic has basically just been three guys taking turns trolling to drag out the length of the argument. Maaaaybe it's time to just stop humoring them.

It was definitely the wrong call no matter what, but I could imagine a situation where the manager was on thin ice for complaints and one more would have been the straw. They could have made a stupid choice out of desperation. Or maybe the manager is just a racist as well. Being fired regardless is probably the correct choice for PR reasons, but potentially being stupid doesn't inherently make them a bad person.

If he does it again, obviously you fire him.

I'd rather be the company that turns around that behavior. Better PR.

Lol I'm sorry. Only read your first line.

I can really see both sides of it as well. I will just leave it at that.

People get fired for stupid **** all the time. All 50 states have at-will employment. You can't sue. I know somebody who got fired from a hotel because a guy jumped out of a window trying to kill himself. Nothing they can sue for.
