I thought that the last episode of Picard (aired today) was fucking awesome, and that they're doing a great job at bridging the time between Nemesis and Star Trek Online, but people seem to be overly critical of the series for reasons I just simply don't understand. These people seemingly exist just to suck the energy from actual fans of the series, or have some backwards thought that Star Trek has to be their Star Trek (really apparent with TNG fans). I just want to watch good science fiction television set in a universe I've known for the past 20 years of my life.

Everyone seems overly ranting about how the show is too much of a melodrama or some bullshit, and couldn't care less about the lore of the universe, or how it links to other places in canon.

You shouldn't allow other people's opinions to affect you. There's always going to be people who think the things you like are awful.

I'm currently re-watching the Star Trek movies.
The first movie was a slog, straight up boring.
Wrath of Khan was great.
Next up is Search for Spock.

Can't wait to see First Contact again, my favourite Star Trek film.

If I was a fan of something for literally decades, and then someone came along and remade that franchise into something radically different from what it always was, and arguably was supposed to be, I'd probably be kind of pissed too. Especially if the changes basically stripped away nearly every single thing I loved about the franchise in the first place, and replaced them with things I either don't give a shit about, or actively hate.

Oh, wait. That's pretty much the reason I stopped watching Doctor Who.

The argument from most people would be that it isn't really the same universe you've known, because they've changed most of the fundamental principles of the setting to slam the square peg of the plot into a very round hole.

And the argument from some other people would be that you're not watching good science fiction at all.

Most of the complaints I've heard are about the ways it conflicts with the rest of the canon, or has been connected to past stuff, but in ways that imply the people doing the connecting don't really seem to understand most of the past stuff.

Sort of the same problem the Star Wars franchise has had lately.

Though to be fair, I don't really have a dog in this fight - I haven't watched Picard (and likely never will, fuck CBS All Access), but I was never really much of a Star Trek fan in the first place, so I don't really care about canon or references to past stuff or have a massive nostalgia boner for them to wank. So I don't have much of an opinion on the new show.

But I do understand where the people who hate it are coming from. Just like I can understand where the people who enjoy it are coming from. And both sides are more than welcome to do so.

I was looking forward to Picard, my parents love Star Trek stuff. The company making it remembers their service isn't worldwide and NZ got all the Star Trek stuff on Netflix. Until Picard. In New Zealand, that is only available on Amazon Prime Video, something my parents can't watch on their TV even if we bothered to get it.

Why are you going online to look for approval for liking something you already know you like?

That said, the complaints about the new Star Trek shows are fairly straightforward, they're written by people who don't know much about and really don't care about old Star Trek.

If you like it that's fine, why do you want people who don't like it to like it?

That said, I love the youtube videos complaining about the new Star Trek shows, because they're hilarious.

The Undiscovered Country is the best Star Trek Film.

Yes but there's a cool space fight and Jeri Ryan.

Discovery? I Can buy that. Picard? I can't buy that. It's very obvious that Picard takes place in the same universe that TOS/TNG/VOY/DS9/ENT took place in. It was obvious in the first episode. Picard was turning into an angry old man filled with PTSD by the time that Nemesis rolled around. Not to mention that he canonically, he was more of a diplomat than anything (and why he's so pissed off at the Federation in Picard).

There is no good science fiction anymore. The closest I can think of when it comes to recent science fiction is The Expanse, and that's based on a book so it has book-style narrative. The entirety of Season 4 was a bottle episode.
Also 10 episode seasons are generally too short to do any long-term character development. The Lost in Space reboot is also passable.

Like I said, Season 1 of Discovery? Absolutely horrible. Gets somewhat passable in Season 2, but it's clear they're trying to "update" some things like the design of the Enterprise. However there are a few good scenes in Season 2 of Discovery like this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yzn_RzM2N-E

There are a lot of good scenes in Picard so far (the final scene of episode 4 makes me happy) but even the intro scene to episode 1 feels comfy (Can't spoil the first scene of a show...)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pN4Tx0EOz_w

People are argunig that the story if Picard is pretty mediocre and that it's serialzed drama instead of episodic. Television has changed since the 80s and 90s, so that's to be expected. I'm not a fan of the scenes at the Reclamation center Borg Cube tho.

The "feign ignorance" thing that RLM does in their videos is really annoying. I know that other youtubers do it too. Like the thing that really pisses me off is when you don't remember character's names, or how to pronounce them.

There's like only 1 place I look for Star Trek ratings, and I've used them for over a decade - Ex Astris Scientia.
