Despite massive praise for this all anti-heroine female villains, the movie had a huge underperformance with only 13M last night and a 33M+ overall weekend...

This after Joker became the biggest DC film to gross over 1 billion as many were expecting this movie to do the same as DC films are finally hitting its stride.

Cinemascore gave the film a B+ as the exit scores are the same for Joker and Suicide Squad...

This was well under the 50-55M tracking as many had hoped although WB hoped for a 45M weekend.

It was never meant to be a big pic like the predecessors but the hope was that it will be a franchise starter for Harley Quinn and this follows a slew of other failed female centric movies at the box office such as Rhythm Section, Charlie's Angels, Alita; Battle Angel and Atomic Blonde)

Only female led movies such as Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel found success though they already had an established property

The movie will now have to rely on oversea totals or good legs to earn a decent profit on it's 100M+ production

Female-led movies have never been controversial when the casting makes sense (ex. Romantic comedies, dramas, etc.). This recent trend of casting women in action roles hasnt gone over too well because female-led action films is just not a genre that has a lot of demand.
The type of guys that watch action films typically arent the type who are going to appreciate heavy feminist propaganda, and most women would more often than not rather watch other genres, so there isnt really an audience for these things.
In the same way, do you think romantic comedies would suddenly catch on with guys if they started focusing more on the male characters than the females? Of course they wouldnt. It wouldnt draw the men in who have usually avoided that genre, and it would probably alienate the women who otherwise enjoy them.

I'm actually surprised. I haven't had any desire to go watch DC movies in quite some time, but I know a lot of people who do.

i mean... joker did REALLY well on a super low budget

edit: coming back to think about it, maybe that is more what DC should be doing. stop trying to make these huge budget blockbusters to compete with marvel. it hasnt worked, and its not going to work. do something more gritty and realistic and people might be open to it. i know i personally am pretty tired of the over saturation of CGI in modern action movies.

yeah thats what i'm thinking, they were able to do with joker something that marvel hasnt done and yet they continue to try to dethrone them with what marvel does best

I thought it was a TV series about the group Oracle and Black Canary founded. Was not until a friend asked if anyone watched to watch the movie that I realized it is a movie.

On rotten tomatoes over 80% of critics and fans said they liked it. Everybody is allowed to have their opinion but in general both critics and fans seem happy.

The one huge comic book fan i know was super excited to see it. I don't care though as comic book movies don't interest me.

I wish boxoffice stats would include how many venues it played in... 'cuz it's pretty easy to sabotage a movie that way.

that is exactly what they should do.

of all the dc movies, there's only four that's been widely praised, and that's the nolan batman trilogy, and joker.

and all three are considered "dark and gritty". every other movie they did was trying to emulate marvel too much, and it just keeps failing for them

I haven't seen it, but it's playing in about 30 minutes here so I could go see it

I mean, the alternatives are Dolittle, Parasite, Peanut Butter Falcon and Just Mercy.... it HAS to be better than that poopy lineup, right?

In assuming this is joke as PBF and Parasite are both amazing movies that BoP cant compare to.

I plan on seeing it eventually though regardless of how good it is, but I am in the minority opinion that most of DCs IPs are much better in their animated universe than the big screen.

The studio projected 45 million, got 33 million instead, plus another 48 million internationally. Not really a bomb, it just under performed a bit, but ya know duckbear, has to turn everything into a sexist or racist issue.
