Yes I am shamelessly ripping off puns... but with a twist! I have played all these games, but from whatever reason, I failed to finish them. I've been really bad about this since I was young, dropping games for no apparent reason even though I liked them. The game I now consider my all-time favorite even suffered this fate for a good 10 years. While I've definitely gotten better about this as an adult, I'm still guilty of it quite often.

These rankings will be based on a combination of how much I liked the game and how strongly I feel that I should finish it.

20. Mega Man X
SNES, 1993

Yes, the Zero in my username was inspired by Zero from the Mega Man X series. No, I have never beaten a single game featuring him. In fact, I never even played a Mega Man game until about 2 years ago. I tried this one out for the Game of the Month series and didn't really care for it, to be honest... which makes sense because I don't like Mega Man games in general. But it's pretty short, so I should have been able to power through, and I manage to finish Mega Man 1, 2, and 3, and I think this one is better than those. One of these days, I have to beat a game with Zero in it. Someday...

19. Horizon Zero Dawn
PS4, 2017

However, the Zero in my username was not inspired by this game. From what I played of it, this game seemed really solid and I was enjoying the first couple hours. Unfortunately, this game suffered a terrible fate. I started it up right after I moved back to Japan in early 2018, and a few weeks later I realized "Oh I'm in Japan I can buy Dragon Quest XI" so I did, and this game fell completely out of mind. It hasn't managed to make it's way out of the depths of my backlog since, unfortunately. To be honest, I don't even really remember much of it, but I remember thinking it was pretty good!

P.S. For some reason this title comes out as Horizona Zero Dawn every time I type it. Must be from typing Arizona so often, I guess!

LoZ: Twilight Princess. I got it for christmas in 2006. But my birthday is the 29 december and I got Sonic Gems Collection. I really hate that I stopped playing the best 3D Zelda for Sonic freaking R, and then it took me 10 years to actually play TP again. >_<

18. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
PS3, 2011

To be honest, I hardly remember anything about this game, but I think I got pretty far into it. Of every game on this list, I think this is the one I remember the least. I also have no recollection of why I dropped it at all. That being said I know I didn't hate it, and RPGs are my favorite genre, so I really should have found the time to finish it. I guess it didn't leave much of an impression though.

17. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
SNES, 1999

I love me some Fire Emblem, but this is the only one I've started that I didn't finish. To be honest, it's kind of bad. The map design and enemy unit placement is not very good and sometimes you just get screwed because there was no way to see this bad situation coming. I also feel like my units missed way too often with high hit percentages. Overall, it seems very poorly designed, but then again I haven't played through any of the earlier ones, so maybe this is par the course for pre-GBA Fire Emblem. I'm glad I didn't buy a physical copy because they go for like $80.

Leif is pretty cool though.

Super Mario Sunshine easily. Yeah it can be pretty buggy with some infamously bad levels. But the gameplay is still a blast and it's a very beautiful game.

I'm also a decent fan of Nuts n Bolts, but I wouldn't say I love it or anything

Edit: Misread the question probably Halo 4. I've thoroughly enjoyed all the games prior to it, including the spinoffs, but 4 just killed all interest I had in the franchise.

I could make this easy for myself and just say Link and name any Zelda game I haven't beaten... also FSA/TFH/LBW as the trio of never played. Another option is... maybe Solid Snake and the MGS series in general? (Watched LPs of them instead)

Technically no. I don't really play a game I just bought if I'm playing something else. Sometimes gifts I will drop a game to play, but that's about it. I don't even have any specific examples.

The most thorough I've been in a series in LoZ, which means I just name Spirit Tracks. There's a couple games I hate for alternate reasons. But nothing beats forcing the DS's awful mic system onto the musical instrument.

16. Dark Souls
PS3, 2011

This one I technically have an excuse for. I got to Blighttown and the frame rate went to hell and was practically unplayable. That being said, I did receive it as a gift, and my friend was really excited because he thought I would absolutely love this game. Obviously, he was a bit bummed that I didn't get very far into it before I abandoned my playthrough. On top of that, there is a remastered version of it now that (hopefully?) fixed the frame rate issues, so that means I no longer have an excuse not to finish this game. I also enjoyed the parts leading up to Blighttown well enough, so there's no reason I haven't gone back and attempted to get revenge on this game.

I wondered about that, which is also why I went and included Snake. I really can't think of anyone with a game I've played but haven't beaten. At least with only thinking of like primary protagonists. Otherwise I have to take side characters and attempt to dive into exactly who's my favorite and... bleh.

Hm... It feels sad that I have to say this, but from my experience... Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Like no offense to Scar (who bought it for me), or anyone that likes it. It's not a bad game. It's just it's the only game purchased for me that I really have a giant complaint about. To explain: I heavily enjoyed badass ranks in the second game, and I like collecting them all, so having some of those ranks be single player receiving things and once per campaign chances... it sucks.

15. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Genesis, 1994

I have beaten Sonic 1 and 2, CD, the Adventure games, Sonic Heroes, Generations... hell, I even beat The Secret Rings! And yet, I never managed to finish Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, or Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I feel like I got pretty far, and Sonic games are pretty short anyway, so it's kind of embarrassing that I didn't finish it. I don't really know why I stopped playing it, and I can't even blame it on being a kid because I just started a playthrough like two years ago. I'm about to finish Sonic Mania, and I'm remembering that I prefer post-Genesis Sonic games (put down your pitchforks!), so it might be a while before I give this one another shot.

14. Dragon Quest II
NES, 1987

Dragon Quest is among my all-time favorite series, despite not finishing a good amount of the games. So I decided to rectify that and started knocking out the missing titles starting from the beginning. Based on DQ2's appearance on this list, you can tell I didn't get very far! The crime here is less that I didn't finish Dragon Quest II specifically, and more about my failure to continue my mission of beating all the Dragon Quest games. Last time I tried to play it, I was on a boat and had no idea where to go, so it's not looking promising that I'll get through this anytime soon.

13. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
PS3, 2013

After beating FFXIII and FFXIII-2, it was only logical that I beat this one too, to complete the story. But I literally couldn't beat Noel AKA the first boss. I don't think this game is considered especially hard, so I have no excuse to be this bad. Actually, my first playthrough of FFXIII ended in similar fashion, as I couldn't beat an early boss, but I eventually went back and got my revenge. Also, I actually liked FFXIII, so the fact that I haven't finished up the series bugs me. This game would probably be higher if I made any real progress, but I didn't really get far enough to determine if I like it or not.

12. Persona 4: The Golden
Vita, 2012

Oh boy, I better get my flame shield ready for this one. Back when Persona 5 dropped, I thought it looked cool so I tried it out even though I had never played a game in the SMT series, let alone the Persona series. It was love at first sight, and 120 hours and a platinum trophy later, I was still craving more Persona. Enter Persona 4: The Golden.

Obviously, I had heard a lot about P4 from Board 8, and I loved P5 so I was pretty excited to get started. Unfortunately, I pretty quickly started feeling like it was just a watered down Persona 5 in every way. It felt like everything was slightly worse, and while P5 oozes style, this one didn't seemed kind of... lame. Like, the character models all look kind of dorky in a way. Gameplay-wise, it's not even a comparison. I prefer 5's cast but that's really just personal taste. Combine that with some Persona burnout after a long P5 playthrough, and this was doomed to be abandoned from the start. The cherry on top is that the one time I tried to jump back in, I realized my save file had been accidentally erased.

I feel like I probably would have enjoyed this game a lot if I played it before P5, but going back is really tough. Still, as a Board 8er I feel a sense of obligation to finish this game, and it's not like I think it's terrible or anything. However, having just recently sunk 130 more hours into The Royal, it's going to be awhile before I try tackling this again. And I'm definitely playing in Japanese next time cause good Lord was that voice acting bad. I'm looking at you, Teddie.

11. Mass Effect
PS3, 2007

Another B8 favorite, I bought the collection with the first 3 games back in like 2014 because hey, user SaveEstelle is good people and he reccomended it. Unfortunately, I didn't even make it through the first one, and it's not even because I hated it. I literally have no idea what made me stop playing. I don't remember thinking it was bad, and I was planning to finish all 3, so I really don't know what went wrong. I've... heard bad things about recent developments in the series, but I still would like to give it another chance some day.

10. Final Fantasy X-2
PS2, 2003

If you know anything about me, you know Final Fantasy X is my favorite game. You probably also know that, even moreso than the game itself, I am a major Tidus fanboy. We kind of have a conflict here in that I want to see the continuation of my favorite game, but a major reason why it's my favorite game is missing!

That being said, I have tried on at least five seperate occasions to get through this game and have never made it beyond a couple hours. The gameplay is pretty good, and obviously a lot of characters I like are back from FFX, but I just can't get into it. Maybe it's the lack of Tidus, or maybe it's whatever happened to Yuna. Maybe it's the fact that FFX concluded so well as it was and didn't need a continuation. However, for as often and harshly as I bash FFX-2, the fact that I've barely made any progress means that I don't really have the right to criticize it, and it's probably not as bad as I (and others) make it out to be.

Give me more Tidus! Give me the old Yuna! ...give me a break.

Dragon Age 2 for me probably. It takes a pretty good cast, especially through their growths... and then ruins every single character by the end because of how their growth continues through their individual stories.

PS2, 2003

As I mentioned before, I love me some Fire Emblem, so of course I like SRPGs like this. I played a little of this on Steam and really enjoyed the experience. Laharl is great and the gameplay seemed cool. So why didn't I finish it? I really couldn't tell you. We're starting to get into the realm of games I really have no excuse for not finishing. I just... stopped playing. I definitely plan on getting back to it someday.

Bonus Question: Have you ever stopped playing a game for no apparent reason?

8. Super Mario RPG
SNES, 1995

I love RPGs and I am a big fan of Mario games, not to mention Mario himself is pretty good in this game. From what I played of it, it seems really interesting and funny, and the gameplay is pretty solid. By all accouts, there's no reason I shouldn't enjoy this game. So why haven't I beaten it? I really don't know. I just never set aside the time to devote to a playthrough. It's definitely up there on the list of games that I want to get to soon.

Bonus Question: What's your favorite Mario sub-series? (RPG, Party, Kart, etc.)

7. Final Fantasy Tactics
PS1, 1997

I love Final Fantasy. I've said it before, but I'm also a fan of SRPGs in the vein of Fire Emblem and the like. You would think a combination of the two, along with the fact that it was my best friend's favorite game growing up, would appeal to me... and you would be right! I've tried to play through it several times but I've never managed to actually stick with it to the end. I definitely enjoyed what I did play of it though. This is probably the most popular Final Fantasy game I haven't beaten, so I would really like to take care of that someday.

Bonus Question: What's your favorite non-mainline Final Fantasy game?

Is it necessary to play Paper Mario before TTYD?

Definitely not necessary. Im trying to remember if there were any minor references, but its certainly not like theres a continuous plot to be lost in.

Id probably was play them in order if you have both of them because the common opinion is that TTYD is a little better (I prefer the original but its the minority opinion and quite possibly based on nostalgia), but if you only have access to TTYD theres no reason you need to hold off.

6. Seiken Densetsu 3
SNES, 1995

I couldn't tell you how many times I've started this game and didn't finish, but I can't imagine it's less than 10. It also must be getting close to 20 years since my first attempt at it on an emulator back in the day. I now own the original SNES catridge and have started it up once, but didn't get very far because I was playing something else at the time. In terms of how many playthroughs I've attempted and how long ago the first one was, I don't think any game tops this. I'm pretty sure I got far enough to get my whole party a couple times, but I don't really remember much about the game other than a few characters' beginning stories. I'm not sure why I haven't beaten this game, but the sheer number of failed playthroughs is embarassing.

Bonus Question: Which game have you started the most times without finishing?

Yes, but to be honest... I don't have an example currently. Maybe Tales of Symphonia the original time I was playing it. Err, second time since first time it was being rented. Second time is where I came close to the end of the game and then just... stopped. Tried to pick it up again but was lost.

Atm, the Mario and Luigi saga thing, but I really haven't gotten far into it at all. It's just a perspective.

Tactics Advance 2. Improved on the first in a lot of circumstances. Would try to play FFT if something really pushed me, but I feel like I'm not going to enjoy it as much as some.

I think Symphonia is the only game I've started more than two times without finishing (I've started it 3 times). The third time was just me feeling like I didn't want to continue without it being co-op.

5. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
PSP, 2004

I originally played this game to see what the fuss was about on the board, but I didn't get very far. Then I played Cold Steel and thought it was awesome, so I decided to play the rest of the series to get the full experience. I ended up buying TitS 2nd and 3rd, Ao, and Zero with the intent to play all of them before Cold Steel 2 and it just... hasn't happened. I started up FC again and made it maybe halfway through but for some reason I just can't get into it. I think I'm just not a big fan of Estelle and Joshua. Regardless, the fact that I bought five games that won't be played until I finish this means I really ought to get through it already. Not to mention I really want to continue the Cold Steel story!

Bonus Question: Have you ever bought a sequel before finishing the prior games?

4. Tales of Symphonia
GameCube, 2003

Funny story about this game, I tried to play it back when it came out, so I asked my friend if I could borrow his copy. He thought it was a good idea to put the disc in his backpack with no case whatsoever and it broke in half. I ended up buying him a new copy for his birthday out of pity, but I never played the game myself until about a year ago on PS3. I actually enjoyed it a lot, and I like most of the characters, but I kind of just stopped playing and I don't remember why. Even though it's only been about a year I can't remember at all why I stopped playing it. Also, this is the only Tales game I have ever played, despite having access to about 7 of them over the years.

Bonus Question: Have you ever played a game 10+ years after you originally intended to?
